McFarland AIR FORCE HISTORY AND MUSEUMS PROGRAM 1998 Conquering the Night Army Air Forces Night Fighters at War The author traces the AAF’s development of aerial night fighting, in- cluding technology, training, and tactical operations in the North African, European, Pacific, and Asian theaters of war. In this effort the United States never wanted for recruits in what was, from start to finish, an all-volunteer night fighting force. Cut short the night; use some of it for the day’s business. — Seneca For combatants, a constant in warfare through the ages has been the sanctuary of night, a refuge from the terror of the day’s armed struggle. On the other hand, darkness has offered protection for operations made too dangerous by daylight. Combat has also extended into the twilight as day has seemed to provide too little time for the destruction demanded in modern mass warfare. In World War II the United States Army Air Forces (AAF) flew night- time missions to counter enemy activities under cover of darkness. Allied air forces had established air superiority over the battlefield and behind their own lines, and so Axis air forces had to exploit the night’s protection for their attacks on Allied installations. -

As we examine key plot points, we reveal which was the more accurate – and perhaps which was better. One is a British-Polish production called Hurricane (Polish title: Bitwa o Angli ę), and the other, Dywizjon 303 , a Polish picture. Both were about Poles in the RAF during the Battle of Britain, and both claimed they were founded on fact. Hurricane had the larger budget – $10,000,000 to Dywizjon 303 ’s $4,000,000 – but the action differed in far more aspects than merely expensive special effects. Spoiler alert: don’t read if you haven’t seen the films! Key plot details ahead… ===================== Hurricane 1. Jan Zumbach stole a plane to escape to England Hurricane began with the message that the film was ‘based on fact’, and quickly cut to a scene of Jan Zumbach , played by renowned Welsh actor Iwan Rheon, using his Swiss passport to travel through occupied France. Under the noses of a group of relaxing German airmen, he succeeds in stealing a plane from an airfield and travelling to Britain. Beyond the obvious suspicion about how Zumbach could possibly manage to pilfer a plane, of central concern here is the fact that Zumbach actually came across to Britain by boat in evacuation procedures. He definitely did nothing like that which is shown in the film and he probably didn’t have a glove compartment full of watches either. -

We Shall Remember Them… The Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum – PISM (Instytut Polski i Muzeum imienia generała Sikorskiego – IPMS) houses thousands of documents and photographs, as well as museum artifacts, films and audio recordings, which reflect the history of Poland. Materials that relate to the Polish Air Force in Great Britain form part of the collection. This presentation was prepared in May/June 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic when the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum was closed due to lockdown. The materials shown are those that were available to the authors, remotely. • The Battle of Britain lasted from the 10th July until the 31st October 1940. • This site reflects on the contribution and sacrifice made by Polish airmen during those three months and three weeks as they and pilots from many other nationalities, helped the RAF in their defence of the United Kingdom. The first exhibit that one sees on entering the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum is this sculpture. It commemorates the contribution of the Polish Air Force during the second world war and incorporates all the Polish squadrons’ emblems and the aircraft types in which they fought.. In the Beginning….. • The Polish Air Force was created in 1918 and almost immediately saw action against the invading Soviet Army during the Polish-Russian war of 1920. • In 1919 eight American volunteers, including Major Cedric Fauntleroy and Captain Merian Cooper, arrived in Poland and joined the 7th Fighter Squadron which was renamed the “Kosciuszko Squadron” after the 18th century Polish and American patriot. When the 1920-21 war ended, the squadron’s name and traditions were maintained and it was the 111th “Kościuszko” Fighter Escadrille that fought in September 1939 over the skies of Poland. -

A World War 2 Polish Fighter Pilot Jan Zumbach
A World War 2 Polish Fighter Pilot Jan Zumbach Jan Zumbach joined the Polish Air Force in 1936 and became a pilot. He flew old planes like the Polish P7 fighter. During the summer of 1939 he broke his leg in a flying accident and so he did not fly in the battle against the Germans who invaded Poland in September 1939. When his leg was better, Zumbach escaped from Poland to France and flew a Morane 406 plane as a fighter pilot for the French Air Force. But on the 10th June 1940 during the German invasion of France, Zumbach was shot down by a German ME 109 fighter. Luckily, he escaped from his plane by parachuting down and was not hurt. The next week he escaped to England in a boat and flew for the British Royal Air Force as a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain in 1940. He was a pilot in number 303 Polish Fighter Squadron. He flew a Hurricane fighter during the Battle of Britain and shot down 8 German planes, mostly ME 109s. In 1942 he became the leader of 303 Polish Fighter Squadron. By 1942 he was flying a Spitfire fighter plane with a Donald Duck painted on it. World War 2 Polish Fighter pilot Jan Zumbach Jan Zumbach joined the Polish Air Force in 1936 and became ________. Aircraft Profiles Were Created Originally for Still-To- Be Completed Books on the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm During the Second World War
This page intentionally left blank PREFACE his document has been created to illustrate my interest in the Second World War and of what can be achieved in the Adobe Creative Suite. All design and layout was accomplished within Adobe InDesign CS2; the artwork using Photoshop 7.0. While this volume is constricted to the aircraft of the Second TWorld War, a topic chosen for its relative diversity. The aircraft of that conflict sported colors and schemes of a variety and aesthetic beauty rarely matched since. Despite its martial bearing, this subject also lends itself to illustrating the cultural bearing of nations at the time. In many instances, the heraldry and badges carried are displayed next to the respective craft. In the case of the British, each of these official unit badges had to be personally approved by the sovereign of that age, and in the following examples, either by King George V or King George VI. Many of these badges represent traditions, past history or take their colors from a local coat of arms. Not only did this link a specific unit to the place of its inception, but served to impart an esprit de corps on its serving men and women. Much of this work could not have been composed without Barry C. Wheeler’s seminal Guide to Military Aircraft Markings, which sparked my interest in aircraft camouflage, coloring and more importantly, squadrons. Most of the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy aircraft profiles were created originally for still-to- be completed books on the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm during the Second World War. -
