As we examine key plot points, we reveal which was the more accurate – and perhaps which was better. One is a British-Polish production called Hurricane (Polish title: Bitwa o Angli ę), and the other, Dywizjon 303 , a Polish picture. Both were about Poles in the RAF during the Battle of Britain, and both claimed they were founded on fact. Hurricane had the larger budget – $10,000,000 to Dywizjon 303 ’s $4,000,000 – but the action differed in far more aspects than merely expensive special effects. Spoiler alert: don’t read if you haven’t seen the films! Key plot details ahead… ===================== Hurricane 1. Jan Zumbach stole a plane to escape to England Hurricane began with the message that the film was ‘based on fact’, and quickly cut to a scene of Jan Zumbach , played by renowned Welsh actor Iwan Rheon, using his Swiss passport to travel through occupied France. Under the noses of a group of relaxing German airmen, he succeeds in stealing a plane from an airfield and travelling to Britain. Beyond the obvious suspicion about how Zumbach could possibly manage to pilfer a plane, of central concern here is the fact that Zumbach actually came across to Britain by boat in evacuation procedures. He definitely did nothing like that which is shown in the film and he probably didn’t have a glove compartment full of watches either. -

We Shall Remember Them… The Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum – PISM (Instytut Polski i Muzeum imienia generała Sikorskiego – IPMS) houses thousands of documents and photographs, as well as museum artifacts, films and audio recordings, which reflect the history of Poland. Materials that relate to the Polish Air Force in Great Britain form part of the collection. This presentation was prepared in May/June 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic when the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum was closed due to lockdown. The materials shown are those that were available to the authors, remotely. • The Battle of Britain lasted from the 10th July until the 31st October 1940. • This site reflects on the contribution and sacrifice made by Polish airmen during those three months and three weeks as they and pilots from many other nationalities, helped the RAF in their defence of the United Kingdom. The first exhibit that one sees on entering the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum is this sculpture. It commemorates the contribution of the Polish Air Force during the second world war and incorporates all the Polish squadrons’ emblems and the aircraft types in which they fought.. In the Beginning….. • The Polish Air Force was created in 1918 and almost immediately saw action against the invading Soviet Army during the Polish-Russian war of 1920. • In 1919 eight American volunteers, including Major Cedric Fauntleroy and Captain Merian Cooper, arrived in Poland and joined the 7th Fighter Squadron which was renamed the “Kosciuszko Squadron” after the 18th century Polish and American patriot. When the 1920-21 war ended, the squadron’s name and traditions were maintained and it was the 111th “Kościuszko” Fighter Escadrille that fought in September 1939 over the skies of Poland. -

A World War 2 Polish Fighter Pilot Jan Zumbach
A World War 2 Polish Fighter Pilot Jan Zumbach Jan Zumbach joined the Polish Air Force in 1936 and became a pilot. He flew old planes like the Polish P7 fighter. During the summer of 1939 he broke his leg in a flying accident and so he did not fly in the battle against the Germans who invaded Poland in September 1939. When his leg was better, Zumbach escaped from Poland to France and flew a Morane 406 plane as a fighter pilot for the French Air Force. But on the 10th June 1940 during the German invasion of France, Zumbach was shot down by a German ME 109 fighter. Luckily, he escaped from his plane by parachuting down and was not hurt. The next week he escaped to England in a boat and flew for the British Royal Air Force as a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain in 1940. He was a pilot in number 303 Polish Fighter Squadron. He flew a Hurricane fighter during the Battle of Britain and shot down 8 German planes, mostly ME 109s. In 1942 he became the leader of 303 Polish Fighter Squadron. Wczoraj dwóch kolegów nie wróciło. Cebrzyński i Stefan Wójtowicz, dziś dostaliśmy telegram, żeby przyjechać po ciało. Zaczyna się kruszyć. Co prawda narobiliśmy szkody szwabom, bo już jest ponad 50 maszyn szwabskich, pomimo że nasz dyon urzęduje od paru dni. Co dzień przy- chodzą telegramy gratulacyjne od Króla, od Sikorskiego, to od dowódz- twa, co dzień rekordy są. Np. wczorajszy dzień dał nam 16 szwabskich maszyn, czego Anglicy nie mogli sobie wyobrazić przedtem. Teraz gdzie się ruszyć, w mieście czy na wsi, słychać „Polish Squadron brave, hero”. Tadeusza Kościuszki") was one of 16 Polish squadrons in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. It was the highest scoring RAF squadron of the Battle of Britain.[1][2][3] The squadron was named after the Polish and American Revolution hero General Tadeusz Kościuszko, and the eponymous Polish 7th Air Escadrille founded by Merian C. Cooper, that served Poland in the 1919-1921 Polish-Soviet War. No. 303 was formed in Britain as part of an agreement between the Polish Government in Exile and the United Kingdom. It had a distinguished combat record and was disbanded in December 1946. No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron 2 History No. 303 (Polish) Squadron was formed on 2 August 1940 at RAF Northolt, and became operational on 31 August. Its initial cadre was 13 Officer and 8 NCO pilots and 135 Polish ground staff. -
Dedicated to the 76 Airmen Who Flew in WW2 From
Dedicated to the 76 airmen who flew in WW2 from who gave their lives in air combat Ever since the end of WW2, Nutfield the home of RAF REDHILL had not had a War Memorial dedicated to the airmen who gave their lives flying from this Airstrip defending our way of life. Mike Garwood and his team of researchers from Nutfield History Group has put this right by finding out about the young airmen who flew from there and their fighter aircraft. This research led to the design and supply of the Memorial Plaque, which was cast of Spitfire type aluminium in Australia. The group gained Ministry of Defence approval for the use of the RAF crest and signed an official document to confirm the plaque would be mounted in a safe, secure and permanent location. Listed as an official War Memorial by the Ministry of Defence. The Plaque is now in Nutfield’s Memorial Hall. Story behind the Research Researching ( with National Archives ) the names of pilots who gave their lives in mortal combat flying from RAF Redhill, we found conflicting information that previously had not come to light. The worst of these were dates that did not relate to each other and RAF Squadrons that were there and not recorded, and squadrons that took part in Battle of Britain actions that we did not have reference to. -

Pamięć o nich żyć będzie... Instytut Polski i Muzeum imienia generała Sikorskiego (IPMS) przechowuje tysiące dokumentów i fotografii, a także wiele eksponatów muzealnych, flmów i nagrań, które naświetlają historię Polski. Materiały związane z Polskimi Siłami Powietrznymi w Wielkiej Brytanii są częścią tych zbiorów. Obecna wystawa została przygotowana w maju i czerwcu 2020 r., podczas pandemii Covid-19, kiedy Instytut Polski i Muzeum imienia generała Sikorskiego był zamknięty ze względu na pandemię. Materiały tu zgromadzone są te, które były dostępne autorom na odległość. • Bitwa o Wielką Brytanię formalnie trwała od 10 lipca do 31 października 1940 r. • Obecna strona przypomina wkład i poświęcenie polskich lotników podczas tych trzech miesięcy i trzech tygodni kiedy oni, razem z pilotami różnych narodowości, pomogli brytyjskiemu RAF w obronie Wielkiej Brytanii. Pierwszym objektem, którą widzi się przy wejściu do Instytutu Polskiego i Muzeum imienia generała Sikorskiego, jest ta rzeźba. Upamiętnia ona wkład Polskich Sił Powietrznych podczas II wojny światowej. Rzeźba łączy odznaki wszystkich polskich dywizjonów razem z sylwetkami samolotów, którymi latali. Na samym początku….. • Polskie Siły Powietrzne sformowane były w 1918 r. i niemal od razu były użyte w walce przeciw Armii Sowieckiej podczas wojny polsko-rosyjskiej w 1920 r. • W 1919 ośmiu amerykańskich ochotników, między nimi Major Cedric Fauntleroy i Captain Merian Cooper, przyjechali do Polski i zostali przydzieleni do 7. Eskadry Myśliwskiej, która przyjęła nazwę “Eskadra im. Tadeusza Kościuszki” po patriocie zarówno amerykańskim, jak i polskim, z osiemnastego wieku. Po zakończeniu wojny polsko-rosyjskiej, nazwa eskadry i jej tradycje były utrzymywane i to była 111. “Kościuszkowska” Eskadra Myśliwska, która brała udział w walkach powietrznych nad Polską we wrześniu 1940 r. -
