Dog Demo Tour of USA and Canada 1969
A Personal Retrospective View of the Dog Demo Team Visit to the USA and Canada 50 years on By Michael Hall During the months of 1969, I was employed on the RAF Police Dog Demonstration Team based at RAF Debden. I had already served 12 months with the Team when there arose several rumours of a proposed tour of North America and Canada being planned. These are my recollections of that ‘once in a lifetime’ event which took place 50 years ago. In preparing this retrospective, I am indebted to Steve Davies and to Rod Inwood, the RAF Police Association archivist, who both supplied some ‘missing’ information (stuff I had forgotten!). That summer the Team appeared at the Royal Tournament in London and other events around the country as the rumours of the ‘American Tour’ intensified. Finally, at a meeting at Debden, the rumours were confirmed and I was told that my name was included in the Team of 12 handlers who would be going. Other handlers selected were Cpl Dennis Cockerell to be team leader, Cpls Mick Chidgey, Jack Johnson, Hedley (Chalky) White, Phil Andrews, George Philp, Ken Hodgeson, John Judd, Roger Clarke, Vic Aitken and Dave Spence. In Command would be Fg Off Peter Brough, assisted by Sgt Danny Holden. Sixteen of the best Demo dogs were selected to go. The Demo routine was amended slightly to fit in with other military performances as part of a large touring event similar to that of the London Royal Tournament. He entered the RAF College Cranwell in January 1929 as a Flight Cadet. After graduating in December 1930, with a permanent commission, Eeles joined 41 Squadron at Northolt. As we examine key plot points, we reveal which was the more accurate – and perhaps which was better. One is a British-Polish production called Hurricane (Polish title: Bitwa o Angli ę), and the other, Dywizjon 303 , a Polish picture. Both were about Poles in the RAF during the Battle of Britain, and both claimed they were founded on fact. Hurricane had the larger budget – $10,000,000 to Dywizjon 303 ’s $4,000,000 – but the action differed in far more aspects than merely expensive special effects. Jan Zumbach stole a plane to escape to England Hurricane began with the message that the film was ‘based on fact’, and quickly cut to a scene of Jan Zumbach , played by renowned Welsh actor Iwan Rheon, using his Swiss passport to travel through occupied France. Under the noses of a group of relaxing German airmen, he succeeds in stealing a plane from an airfield and travelling to Britain. Beyond the obvious suspicion about how Zumbach could possibly manage to pilfer a plane, of central concern here is the fact that Zumbach actually came across to Britain by boat in evacuation procedures. He definitely did nothing like that which is shown in the film and he probably didn’t have a glove compartment full of watches either. -

Soviet Communism and Informal Family Insurance Abstract We study the effect of exposure to communism (EC), a political-economic regime based on collectivist planning, on preferences for family supports, which we refer to as ‘informal family insurance’. We exploit both cross-country and cohort variation in EC in a large sample of Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC). Against the backdrop that ‘communism gives rise to the abolition of the family’, we find robust evidence that EC strengthens the preference for family insurance which coexists with a stronger preference for social insurance. We find a six per cent increase in preferences for care to older parents and a four per cent increase in preferences for support to pre-school children and financial support to adult children. These effects are explained by the erosion of both generalized trust and the lower confidence in public institutions, suggesting that (raising uncertainty and adversity during) communism increased the demand for all types of available insurance. -

A Question of Honor: The Kościuszko Squadron: Forgotten Heroes of World War II by Lynne Olson and Stanley Cloud, 20003, Knopf, 495 pages. The book, written by veteran American journalists and authors Olson and Cloud, is the engrossing account of Polish fighter pilots who helped save England during the Battle of Britain in 1940. The story of the Kościuszko Squadron is also the centerpiece for a broader history of Poland in World War II. The Prologue sets the theme of the book: Poland's betrayal by the United States and Britain. It describes the Victory Parade in London in 1946. Polish pilots and all other Poles who had fought under British command were excluded. They were barred from the celebration by the British government for fear of offending Stalin. The Kościuszko Squadron of the Polish Air Force had a unique history it had its origins in 1919 when a group of American pilots came to Poland to help Poles in the SovietPolish War. In 1939 The Kościuszko Squadron (or Squadron 303) was formed from experienced Polish Air Force pilots who had fled Poland by way of Romania and France to England. It was the first allPolish squadron in the British Royal Air Force. The first part of the book centers on five pilots from the squadron: Mirosław Feric, Jan Zumbach, Witold Lokuciewski, Zdzisław Krasnodębski and Witold Urbanowicz. The authors had access to the squadron's unofficial diary and to letters, interviews, memoirs, histories and photographs. The personal experiences of these "hell raisers" illuminate the momentous events of the war. -

We Shall Remember Them… The Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum – PISM (Instytut Polski i Muzeum imienia generała Sikorskiego – IPMS) houses thousands of documents and photographs, as well as museum artifacts, films and audio recordings, which reflect the history of Poland. Materials that relate to the Polish Air Force in Great Britain form part of the collection. This presentation was prepared in May/June 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic when the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum was closed due to lockdown. The materials shown are those that were available to the authors, remotely. • The Battle of Britain lasted from the 10th July until the 31st October 1940. • This site reflects on the contribution and sacrifice made by Polish airmen during those three months and three weeks as they and pilots from many other nationalities, helped the RAF in their defence of the United Kingdom. The first exhibit that one sees on entering the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum is this sculpture. It commemorates the contribution of the Polish Air Force during the second world war and incorporates all the Polish squadrons’ emblems and the aircraft types in which they fought.. In the Beginning….. • The Polish Air Force was created in 1918 and almost immediately saw action against the invading Soviet Army during the Polish-Russian war of 1920. • In 1919 eight American volunteers, including Major Cedric Fauntleroy and Captain Merian Cooper, arrived in Poland and joined the 7th Fighter Squadron which was renamed the “Kosciuszko Squadron” after the 18th century Polish and American patriot. When the 1920-21 war ended, the squadron’s name and traditions were maintained and it was the 111th “Kościuszko” Fighter Escadrille that fought in September 1939 over the skies of Poland. -

C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself.
