That sounds almost a bit poetic, which is not even undesirable: Our articles from the design section invite you to dream or help you to make others dream. Holger Späing Editor-in-chief With his Rhosel layout Jürgen Wagner has created a new work in which the landscape is clearly in the foreground. His work was based on the most beautiful impressions he took from the wine-growing regions along the Rhein and Mosel (Rhine and Moselle). At home he modelled them. We like the result so much that we do not want to withhold it from our readers! We are happy and proud at the same time to be the first magazine to report on it. Thus, we are today, after a short break in the last issue, also continuing our annual main topic. We also had to realize that the occurrence of infections has queered our pitch. As a result, we have not been able to take pictures of some of the originally planned layouts to this day, and many topics have shifted and are now threatening to conglomerate towards the end of the year.

But nobody can seriously estimate when our everyday life will be normal again. Perhaps, or should I say hopefully, this everyday life will bring a totally different Holger Späing normality than we can imagine today. If we are honest with ourselves, then our Editor-in-chief modern times have also brought along many habits that we certainly do not love. In the last few weeks, almost forgotten values and desires have dominated our lives, which we hope we will never let go again. I myself have found more time for my family without having to neglect my work. We cooked and played together and I also found time to do more handicrafts or to do exactly that again with my children. This is a delight for me, because joint model building kills several birds with one stone. Perhaps you too have found time to resume, advance or even complete projects that have already been put aside? ON THE GOVERNANCE OF REGIONAL INNOVATION SYSTEMS CASE STUDIES FROM FOUR CITY-REGIONS WITHIN THE GERMAN FEDERAL STATE OF NORTH RHINE-WESTPHALIA: AACHEN, DORTMUND, DUISBURG AND DÜSSELDORF by CARSTEN SCHIERENBECK A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Commerce and Social Science of The University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Centre for Urban and Regional Studies Birmingham Business School The University of Birmingham April 2009 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the governance of so-called regional innovation systems. It studies regional and sub-regional dynamics in building institutional environments conducive to innovation. The research employs a qualitative research methodology that comprises semi- structured interviews with 47 policy-makers, practitioners and academics in four case studies of city-regions within the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia: Aachen, Dortmund, Duisburg and Düsseldorf. It identifies factors influencing the systemic-ness of business and innovation support, particularly within the triple helix of university-industry-government relations. It argues that important sub-regional governance dynamics are neglected by many contemporary regional conceptualisations and proposes considering local innovation systems as an alternative.

If 2020 is history, then an extraordinary year full of deprivation will be behind us. I am sure we have all rediscovered and learned to appreciate our hobby for more than nine months. Let us therefore save our optimism and carry it into the new year. Holger Späing All the easier it will be for us to look forward to better times again! Editor-in-chief A special anniversary year, which has played almost no role in our gauge, will soon come to an end. Have the friends of Epoch II really become so few? I fear that this is true, but it should not prevent us from commemorating the anniversary appropriately. We are celebrating 100 years of the Reichsbahn by taking a look in both the model and the original at an invention that was once revolutionary. It stood for the innovative strength of a company that was always financially suffering and could not afford to lose its footing in times of growing competition. We are talking about the Culemeyer heavy trailers called after their inventor. We pay tribute to their history in a story about the original and with a look at the model offerings.
