I am sure you will be pleasantly sur- prised. The Province of Alava is the biggest in area and the least populated of the provinces in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. Perhaps due to this, or for the retiring nature of its inhabitants, it is the least well known. Its strategic location has placed it at the crossroads of trade routes since time imme- morial. Currently, it is the major logistic hub in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. Alava’s economy is very industrialized. It is capable of competing in a global market, thus placing it far above the European average for various economic in- dicators, as you will be able to see in this document. These results are the fruits of the effort, day in day out, of thousands of the hard-working and qualified people who work in our companies; rigorous people, highly skilled thanks to an excel- lent education system, both for vocational training and university education, capable of meeting the challenges of today’s companies. This high level of wealth allows our citizens to enjoy internationally recognized levels of environ- mental protection, of quality of life, and of social welfare. In Alava, the proximity and the quality of both the health and the social services, and the network of social-cultural and sports installa- tions stand out. These and other factors enable Alava to be feature among the highest figures in the world in the human development indexes (HDI). I hope that this publication will contribute to making our province better known. I am convinced it will be simple way to find out more about our strengths. We have great potential both from an economic and an environmental point of view, not forgetting our historical heritage and our wine and culinary traditions, as well as our social and urban model. In short, Alava is a great place in which to invest, to enjoy and to live. It is a region which, as Pres- ident of the Provincial Council, I would like you to visit and then judge first-hand the possibilities and opportunities which it offers.     How Can a Modern History of the Basque Country Make Sense? on Nation, Identity, and Territories in the Making of Spain

    HOW CAN A MODERN HISTORY OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY MAKE SENSE? ON NATION, IDENTITY, AND TERRITORIES IN THE MAKING OF SPAIN JOSE M. PORTILLO VALDES Universidad del Pais Vasco Center for Basque Studies, University of Nevada (Reno) One of the more recurrent debates among Basque historians has to do with the very object of their primary concern. Since a Basque political body, real or imagined, has never existed before the end of the nineteenth century -and formally not until 1936- an «essentialist» question has permanently been hanging around the mind of any Basque historian: she might be writing the histo- ry of an non-existent subject. On the other hand, the heaviness of the «national dispute» between Basque and Spanish identities in the Spanish Basque territories has deeply determined the mean- ing of such a cardinal question. Denying the «other's» historicity is a very well known weapon in the hands of any nationalist dis- course and, conversely, claiming to have a millenary past behind one's shoulders, or being the bearer of a single people's history, is a must for any «national» history. Consequently, for those who consider the Spanish one as the true national identity and the Basque one just a secondary «decoration», the history of the Basque Country simply does not exist or it refers to the last six decades. On the other hand, for those Basques who deem the Spanish an imposed identity, Basque history is a sacred territory, the last refuge for the true identity. Although apparently uncontaminated by politics, Basque aca- demic historiography gently reproduces discourses based on na- - 53 - ESPANA CONTEMPORANEA tionalist assumptions.

    www.vntgimports.com Vega Sicilia needs no introduction and is considered, by most, to be one of the top ten wineries in the world. They cater to a very select clientele in 85 countries, and even then only exports 40 percent of its limited production of 130,000 bottles a year. The other 60 percent is sold in Spain. The jewel in the winery’s crown, Vega Sicilia Unico, takes 10 years to produce. The Valbuena is not a second wine. Rather, it is a different expression that has aged for less time, and will drink sooner, than Unico. It is a wine that comes from the younger vines and, it is mostly made with the varieties of Tempranillo and Merlot, rather than Cabernet Sauvignon. Bodegas Alión was formed in 1986 as a winery which would be run independently to its big brother, the great Vega Sicilia. This 85-hectare wine estate was founded by the Álvarez family to provide a modern expression of Ribera del Duero wine. 35 hectares of the estate is located around the winery, with a further 50 hectares dedicated to Alión within the historic Vega Sicilia vineyards. Unlike Vega Sicilia, where we find a merging of the traditional and modern winemaking techniques, Alión is made using state-of-the-art equipment. Forward and uncompromising, these are wines with impressive frames and show an alternative side of Tinto Fino. Pintia realizes the desire of the Álvarez family to make the best Toro wine, a designation that gives wines body, exoticism, an explosion of aromas, and a modern personality and character.

Como bien adelantamos ayer, el festival está siendo todo un éxito para los quesos vascos. Todas las estimaciones se han convertido realidad y un total de 105 quesos Artzai Gazta, Denominación de Origen Idiazabal y Artzai Gazta con Denominación de Origen Idiazabal han sido premiados con medallas Super Gold, oro, plata y bronce en los World Cheese Awards. Baztarrika (Gipuzkoa) y Santamañe (Bizkaia) han sido categorizados como Super Gold. De la mano de Artzai Gazta Elkartea, el Euskadi-Basque Country International Chesee Festival está adentrado en su último día. Aunque todavía no se conocen las cifras oficiales, muchas personas siguen acercándose hasta el Kursaal, convertido en templo del queso. La capital guipuzcoana es estos días punto de encuentro de productores/as, artesanos/as, profesionales del sector y amantes del queso. No hay duda que el festival está siendo un gran éxito para los quesos vascos y reflejo de ello han sido la 29ª edición de los World Cheese Awards. En total, se han presentado alrededor de 250 quesos Artzai Gazta, Denominación de Origen Idiazabal y Artzai Gazta con Denominación de Origen Idiazabal. Convirtiendo todas las estimaciones en realidad 105 quesos han sido premiados. Concretamente 2 han recibido Super Gold, 17 medalla de oro, 36 medalla de plata y 50 medalla de bronce. In accordance with the provisions in Article 5.4.1 of Annex 13 of the International Civil Aviation Convention; and with articles 5.5 of Regulation (UE) nº 996/2010, of the European Parliament and the Council, of 20 October 2010; Article 15 of Law 21/2003 on Air Safety and articles 1., 4. and 21.2 of Regulation 389/1998, this investigation is exclusively of a technical nature, and its objective is the prevention of future civil aviation accidents and incidents by issuing, if necessary, safety recommendations to prevent from their reoccurrence.

    NP Furgonetas Cruz Roja

    Prentsa Oharra Nota de Prensa Seis nuevos vehículos adaptados realizan los traslados de las personas mayores usuarias de los centros rurales de atención diurna de Álava La Diputación Foral ha financiado la adquisición de los vehículos empleados por Cruz Roja en el servicio de trasporte adaptado a los CRAD Vitoria-Gasteiz, 26 de noviembre de 2018. Las personas mayores usuarias de los centros rurales de atención diurna (CRAD) de Álava cuentan desde este año con 6 nuevos vehículos adaptados para el desplazamiento desde sus hogares. La Diputación Foral de Álava ha financiado la adquisición, adaptación y actualización de estas nuevas furgonetas por parte de Cruz Roja, entidad que gestiona este servicio, debido a la necesidad de sustitución y mejora de la flota existente, que la componen un total de 18 vehículos. La presentación de los nuevos vehículos ha tenido lugar esta mañana en la sede de Cruz Roja en Vitoria-Gasteiz, en un acto que ha contado con la presencia de la diputada foral de Servicios Sociales, Marian Olabarrieta, el director gerente del Instituto Foral de Bienestar Social (IFBS), José Luis Alonso Quilchano, y el presidente y el coordinador autonómico de Cruz Roja Euskadi, Iñaki Irusta y Aitor Allende, respectivamente. La Diputación Foral de Álava y Cruz Roja vienen colaborando a través de sucesivos convenios en el servicio de transporte adaptado, para cuya prestación la entidad social utiliza los vehículos que tiene cedidos por la institución foral. El servicio, ofrecido por el Instituto Foral de Bienestar Social, abarca todo el territorio alavés, salvo Vitoria-Gasteiz, y permite desplazarse a los CRAD a las personas mayores cuyos problemas de movilidad les impiden utilizar los medios de transporte público.
