Used by Hal Hill at Brooklands and many long-distance rallies before & after the First World War and last used by him in 1925. Fitted with the Gradua Gear, designed by Freddie Barnes in 1908 and fitted by Zenith until 1925. Zenith were barred from competing in the same classes as machines without variable gears, hence from 1910 the Zenith Trade Mark included the word BARRED. Capable of about 70 mph on the track, it's fitted with the JAP sidevalve engine, with 90mm bore x 77.5 stroke. It also has the large belt pulleys giving a variation from 3 to 1 in top gear, down to 6 to 1 in low gear. Rebuilt in 1964 and used by the current owner in VMCC events. _________________________________________________________________________________________ 1914 Rover Sturmey Archer 3 ½ Classes Entered:Pre 1950 Sunbeam MCC Bike Details: Found languishing in a garage, last used in 1972, as witnessed by an old tax disc.     5. Men of Substance – 1 When we are young and in the prime of our youth our lives pass so fast that events come and go quickly like today’s daily News. No sooner one event passes, another leaps up to replace it. Only the more dramatic or the humorous for the most part will stick with us. I recently discovered and read an old magazine article written in March 1992 to commemorate the anniversary of the tragic loss of Mike Hailwood. It triggered in me an old memory that I thought I had completely forgotten with the passage of time. Back around 1964/5 I was a member of a UK motorcycle club called The Southend & District MCC. Although I never met them, Bill Ivy and Dave Bickers were also registered members of the same club in compliance with an official UK ACU racing license ruling at that time. The ACU (Auto Cycle Union) was similar to the US. AMA (American Motorcycle Association) in governing all forms of motorcycle sport. We were treated to many a fascinating Club Talk by some quite prominent people of the day such as Charles Mortimer Sr. and Wal Phillips, (a veteran cinder-track speedway rider who was one of the first to develop aftermarket fuel injectors for motorcycles in the UK.), to name but a couple. An Avon Tire representative once came and gave a full presentation on the then newly developing technology of 'Avon Cling' High Hysteresis Tire Compounds. Bert Greeves, founder and owner of Greeves Motorcycles, was also a highly prominent figure along with his long-time friend and business associate, Derry Preston-Cobb, who ran the Greeves subsidiary of Invacar, an independent invalid vehicle factory located next door to the main Greeves factory on One Tree Hill, in Thundersley, Essex.

    Coventry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is the national record of people who have shaped British history, worldwide, from the Romans to the 21st century. The Oxford DNB (ODNB) currently includes the life stories of over 60,000 men and women who died in or before 2017. Over 1,300 of those lives contain references to Coventry, whether of events, offices, institutions, people, places, or sources preserved there. Of these, over 160 men and women in ODNB were either born, baptized, educated, died, or buried there. Many more, of course, spent periods of their life in Coventry and left their mark on the city’s history and its built environment. This survey brings together over 300 lives in ODNB connected with Coventry, ranging over ten centuries, extracted using the advanced search ‘life event’ and ‘full text’ features on the online site (www.oxforddnb.com). The same search functions can be used to explore the biographical histories of other places in the Coventry region: Kenilworth produces references in 229 articles, including 44 key life events; Leamington, 235 and 95; and Nuneaton, 69 and 17, for example. Most public libraries across the UK subscribe to ODNB, which means that the complete dictionary can be accessed for free via a local library. Libraries also offer 'remote access' which makes it possible to log in at any time at home (or anywhere that has internet access). The review of this last year won’t take long, I’ve not done much or been anywhere much but am still here so it’s not all bad. If the vaccine roll out works better than some other things, the prediction is some return to ‘normal’ by East- er. Must admit that I see a conflict between normal and our club but I know what they mean. Spring is the time that we really start to get going with Breakfast meetings, Drive it day and show plan- ning can really pick up so we may be back in full flow at our usual time, we will see. A reminder that the committee is proposing to carry over subs to 2021 as we were effectively shut for most of this year. We have found a way to carry on with Tradsheet and our members only Facebook page has kept us informed and entertained. The website has been running throughout and has visitors from all over the world looking to see what we are up to. In that respect, we have carried on as best we can and have fared better than some clubs that have all but disappeared for the time being.

Part One 1920 to 1980 Alvis 12/75 sports saloon The hot hatch back has been with us since the mid seventies, sporting version’s of the small family hatch back saloons that had come to replace in much of the world the smaller booted/trunk saloon car. Of late many of the hot hatch models of this century have been fitted with ever increasingly larger engines in the relentless quest for even more speed, but there are still some models in production with modest sized engines in the spirit of the original hot hatches and the light sports saloons that came before them, with capacities up to 1600cc’s. What do I mean by light sports saloon, I am referring to the kind of light car, that is one with a moderate size engine, that was purchased not just for transport but one that will provide an increased degree of performance that will enhance the pleasure of motoring and that in some cases could take part in motorsport of one form or another. The sports saloon was a very British thing in the nineteen twenties, thirties and forties, with quite a few models on offer with that description, but for many of them it was unwarranted and I have only mentioned those with a sporting connection here. In most of the world in that period light cars were usually just for transport and if a sporting car was required it had a larger engine ,some times very large.
