Still Mind at 20 Years: a Personal Reflection GATE
March 2014 Vol.10 No. 1 in a one-room zendo in Jersey City. So I invited folks from a series of meditation sessions that Roshi had led at a church in Manhattan, as well as people I was seeing in my spiritual direction work who were interested in meditation. We called ourselves Greenwich Village Zen Community (GVZC) and Sensei Kennedy became our first teacher. We sat on chairs or, in some cases, on toss pillows that were strewn on the comfortable library sofa; there was no altar, no daisan, only two periods of sitting with kin-hin in between, along with some basic instruction. My major . enduring memory is that on most Tuesdays as we began Still sitting at 7 pm, the chapel organist would begin his weekly practice. The organ was on the other side of the library wall so our sitting space was usually filled with Bach & Co. Having come to Zen to “be in silence,” it drove me rather crazy. Still Mind at 20 Years: I didn’t have to worry too much, though, because after a few months the staff told us the library was no longer available. So we moved, literally down the street, to the A Personal Reflection (cont. on pg 2) by Sensei Janet Jiryu Abels Still Mind Zendo was founded on a selfish act. I needed a sangha to support my solo practice and, since none existed, I formed one. Now, 20 years later, how grateful I am that enough people wanted to come practice with each other back then, for this same sangha has proved to be the very rock of my continuing awakening. -

Reflections on Zen and Ethics1 Jan Van Bragt Introduction Quite a few years ago already, the fast-growing Zen world in the United States was shocked by the news of scandals discovered in some U.S. Zen halls, sexual and financial abuses committed by Zen Masters. I have forgotten all the details already, but the facts confronted us all with an intriguing question, namely: How is it possible that Zen Masters (Rôshis) – people who are supposed to be enlightened – commit such unethical, immoral acts? From the Zen world two. rather contradictory, answers were soon heard. One, (the answer explicitly voiced by Abe Masao): “A Zen Master who commits such acts proves thereby that he is not enlightened.” The presupposition here seems to be that transcendental wisdom is intrinsically linked to morality and directs the subject to spontaneously lead a highly ethical life. – The problem here is only that doubt is thrown at the system of attestation of the enlightenment of the disciple by the master (inka). The second answer is rather the opposite of the first: “Enlightenment has nothing to do with ethics,” and further: “Zen has nothing to do with ethics.” I must confess that I never heard this answer explicitly formulated, in all its definiteness, by any of my Zen friends. The nearest thing I ever heard directly was a statement made, at the 1991 meeting of the Japan Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies, by Nishimura Eshin, presently president of Hanazono University at Kyoto: “Zen has nothing to do with social engagement.” For the sake of possible later -

Si trasferisce a Tokyo all'età di 19 anni ed entra nella Dōjō di Negishi Shingorō della Shindo Munen-ryu. Negli anni Nakayama è diventato il maestro di Shindo Munen-ryu kenjutsu . Ha insegnato presso il Yushinkan Dojo, nei pressi di Korakuen a Tokyo, e ha preparato molti dei migliori spadaccini del suo tempo. Era un amico personale di Morihei Ueshiba fondatore del metodo Aikido, e lui senz’altro ha contribuito a favorire e organizzare il matrimonio tra Nakakura Kiyoshi e la figlia di Ueshiba, Matsuko. Transformative Learning, Experience and Cultivation Zen and Integrated Buddhist Studies (IBS) 2020 Main Course Online 18 September – 17 December Jikishoan Zen Buddhist Community Inc. is a non-profit charitable organization founded in 1999. Jikishoan’s vision is to offer Transformative Buddhist Learning, Experience and Cultivation for Everyone. As part of our commitment to this vision, Jikishoan offers Zen and Integrated Buddhist Studies (IBS) based on Soto Zen Buddhism and its teaching lineage through India, China, Japan and Australia. In its 11th year since inception, the IBS comprises a three-fold Main Course program in basic Buddhist concepts and practice. The program includes meditation instruction and workshops based on Zen training in Ekayana, the ultimate Mahayana tradition. Through tutorials, consultation and practice interviews with the Teacher and Course Coordinators, students are assisted with their course planning, work, practice and independent study and projects. The Main Course Program offers A, B and C courses that are integral to Zen education and discipline. These three programs integrate with one another like the Root, Stem and Blossom of a lotus plant growing in muddy water. COURSE A The Western education model is used systematically while Buddhist perspectives are tested and cultivated during meditation, practice, and in-class discussions. Course A integrates implicitly with the other two courses, B and C. Director Ekai Korematsu leads qualified coordinators for these three courses to support students with their training, practice, objectives and administration. Participants are encouraged to examine their own cultural and intellectual assumptions as they pursue these studies in a supportive environment. Mid-year and during the final month of their IBS year, students are invited to submit a report paper on a topic of their choice in order to complete the Main Course work and/or as an Independent Study Project.
