During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. Before, during, and after the rule of her husband Emperor Taishō (1879-1926; r. 1912-1926), Empress Teimei held a highly public role, and was frequently seen in a variety of visual media. -

Keller Kimbrough Tourists in Paradise Writing the Pure Land in Medieval Japanese Fiction Late-medieval Japanese fiction contains numerous accounts of lay and monastic travelers to the Pure Land and other extra-human realms. In many cases, the “tourists” are granted guided tours, after which they are returned to the mun- dane world in order to tell of their unusual experiences. This article explores several of these stories from around the sixteenth century, including, most prominently, Fuji no hitoana sōshi, Tengu no dairi, and a section of Seiganji engi. I discuss the plots and conventions of these and other narratives, most of which appear to be based upon earlier oral tales employed in preaching and fund-raising, in order to illuminate their implications for our understanding of Pure Land-oriented Buddhism in late-medieval Japan. I also seek to demon- strate the diversity and subjectivity of Pure Land religious experience, and the sometimes startling gap between orthodox doctrinal and popular vernacular representations of Pure Land practices and beliefs. keywords: otogizōshi – jisha engi – shaji engi – Fuji no hitoana sōshi – Bishamon no honji – Tengu no dairi – Seiganji engi – hell – travel R. All rights reserved. PREFACE The Rules of Tennis have changed! That’s right. For only the fifth time in the history of tennis, the Rules of Tennis have changed. The change specifies that sanctioned events for kids 10 and under must be played with some variation of the courts, rules, scoring and equipment utilized by 10 and Under Tennis. In other words, the Rules of Tennis now take into account the unique physical and physiological attributes of children. Tennis is no longer asking children to play an adult-model sport. And the rule change could not have come fast enough. Something drastic needs to happen if the poor rate of tennis participation in children is taken seriously. Among children under 10, tennis participation pales in relation to soccer, baseball, and basketball. Worse, only .05 percent of children under 10 who play tennis participate in USTA competition. Clearly, something is amiss, and the USTA believes that the new rule governing 10-and- under competition will help transform tennis participation among American children through the USTA’s revolutionary 10 and Under Tennis platform. The most basic aspect of any sport rollout is to define the rules of engagement for training and competition. So in an attempt to best gauge how to provide the proper foundation for kids to excel in tennis—through training, competition, and transition—the USTA held its inaugural Youth Tennis Symposium in February 2012. -

Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively). -

CHAPTER 7 JAPAN'S TURN TO THE WEST Although Japan was never a "closed country" in the sense that sakoku literally implies, it did awaken from two hundred years of substantial "national isolation" in the last half of the nineteenth cen- tury to devote its full energy toward the realization of one goal - the establishment of a modern nation-state. This effort itself is better evidence of Japan's "turn to the West" than anything else, for the concept of a modern nation-state had yet to manifest itself in any non-Western country. In economic terms, a modern nation-state is a state that has experienced an industrial revolution; in social terms, it is a state with a centralized political system under which popular participation is structured through the parliamentary institutions of a constitutional order. By any measure, such characteristics of a state are thoroughly Western in nature and origin. These distinguishing characteristics were not to be found in the To- kugawa bakuhan state. Nineteenth-century Japanese society was pre- industrial, and its economy was based on forms of production that depended on animate rather than mechanical sources of power. A large bourgeoisie did exist to carry on commercial and financial enterprise, but it was excluded from participating in political decisions. The Toku- gawa political structure was composed of a bureaucracy, representing feudally privileged classes that operated within a system that reconciled theoretically incompatible elements of feudalism and absolute shogunal "monarchy." Despite Japan's high level of cultural homogenity - or perhaps because of it - the concept of a people as a "nation" that partici- pated actively in the affairs of a "state" was unknown. -

Measurements of the horizontal coefficient of restitution for a superball and a tennis ball Rod Crossa) Physics Department, University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW 2006 Australia ͑Received 9 July 2001; accepted 20 December 2001͒ When a ball is incident obliquely on a flat surface, the rebound spin, speed, and angle generally differ from the corresponding incident values. Measurements of all three quantities were made using a digital video camera to film the bounce of a tennis ball incident with zero spin at various angles on several different surfaces. The maximum spin rate of a spherical ball is determined by the condition that the ball commences to roll at the end of the impact. Under some conditions, the ball was found to spin faster than this limit. This result can be explained if the ball or the surface stores energy elastically due to deformation in a direction parallel to the surface. The latter effect was investigated by comparing the bounce of a tennis ball with that of a superball. Ideally, the coefficient of restitution ͑COR͒ of a superball is 1.0 in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The COR for the superball studied was found to be 0.76 in the horizontal direction, and the corresponding COR for a tennis ball was found to vary from Ϫ0.51 to ϩ0.24 depending on the incident angle and the coefficient of sliding friction. © 2002 American Association of Physics Teachers. ͓DOI: 10.1119/1.1450571͔ I. Abstract Visual and Material Culture at Hōkyōji Imperial Convent: The Significance of “Women’s Art” in Early Modern Japan by Sharon Mitsuko Yamamoto Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art University of California, Berkeley Professor Gregory Levine, Chair This dissertation focuses on the visual and material culture of Hōkyōji Imperial Buddhist Convent (Hōkyōji ama monzeki jiin) during the Edo period (1600-1868). Situated in Kyoto and in operation since the mid-fourteenth century, Hōkyōji has been the home for women from the highest echelons of society—the nobility and military aristocracy—since its foundation. The objects associated with women in the rarefied position of princess-nun offer an invaluable look into the role of visual and material culture in the lives of elite women in early modern Japan. Art associated with nuns reflects aristocratic upbringing, religious devotion, and individual expression. As such, it defies easy classification: court, convent, sacred, secular, elite, and female are shown to be inadequate labels to identify art associated with women. This study examines visual and material culture through the intersecting factors that inspired, affected, and defined the lives of princess-nuns, broadening the understanding of the significance of art associated with women in Japanese art history. -
