THE TACKING TIMES NEWSLETTER Page 3 Crawfish Regatta—Lake Arthur Yacht Club Crawfish Regatta Report: The Crawfish Regatta was held at Lake Arthur Yacht Club on April 20 th , 2013. For those of you that have never been to LAYC, it’s only about a 45 minute drive from our club and is located on Lake Ar- thur. The lake is roughly the same size as our lake but the club is mostly a keel boat club having many more boats from 22’ to 42’ at their docks. For this race, they had twelve boats race in the Ports- mouth Class and four turned out for the Flying Scots. Lydia Fontenot, Danielle Standefer and I made the trip from LCYC to join the racing for the day. The wind was up and down that day with times where we were almost drifting along and then there were times when I was really happy to have the extra crew to hold the boat down. There were some spectacular changes on the course where we went from third place to being first around the wind- ward mark due to a huge wind shift in our favor. The first run downwind had half the fleet having spin- naker problems and one choosing not to run it at all. Every race for the Scots was a near photo finish as the fleet was very tight up until the end. The over- all winner was Al Rees with my crew coming in 2 nd place through a tie-breaker process as determined by the racing rules of sailing. Doug Narby came in 3 rd place after winning the tie-breaker with Charles Manuel. I did say this was close racing… I don’t know that I’ve ever been in a regatta where the entire class results were decided by a tie-breaker. The reason the Crawfish Regatta has it’s name is because after the race the club treats everyone to some crawfish. We had to purchase tickets in order to have some but it was well worth it as the craw- fish were rather very good and by far the best I’ve had this crawfish season. To go along with the crawfish beer and sodas were provided and with a nice beautiful day with the wonderful company of all those that attended the regatta, we sat around and told the general lies of how we could’ve beat each other in every race if only that one shift wouldn’t have happened. Overall I’d say we had a per- fect day out on the water accompanied by a wonderful get together afterwards. Scott Cesar THE TACKING TIMES NEWSLETTER Page 4 Contraband Days—Pirogue Building Contest Hurricane Season is almost here, Are you prepared? After two days of heavy rain and winds, we were expecting more of the same for race day. (I had 7.5’’ at my house.) Guess what?No wind at all but we had tons of vegetation washed down river into the lake. Looked like a floating jun- gle. At Skippers meeting time we had NO wind. The race was postponed. No wind came up until later in the afternoon. Finally a light breeze settled in and we went out to race. The first race concluded and we tried a second race in a little breeze. Some boats started at the pen end of the line and others started by the committee boat. Those that started by the boat had a very difficult time with the vegetation and less wind. The pen end folks had less vegetation and more favorable wind. The wind proceeded to die after the start. The boat end folks and the Scot fleet (second start) just drifted along and really never got past the windward mark.
