The Leadership Academy is named in honor of Derek Ervin Smith (November 1, 1961-August 9, 1996). Smith attended UofL from 1979 to 1982 then later went on to play in the NBA. He was a member of the 1980 University of Louisville Cardinals team. That team won the NCAA champion- ship by defeating UCLA 59-54. Smith was later selected by the Golden State War- riors in the 1982 NBA draft. He played for the , the , the and the Boston Celt- ics. During his NBA career, he scored over 5,000 points.

Smith’s life ended too soon when he died of an apparent heart attack while on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean near Bermuda in 1996. But, his memory lives on through the Derek Smith Leadership Academy. Smith was a leader on and off the court. It is our hope that UofL student-athletes follow in the giant footsteps of such a legend ... a legend Cardinalthat is the true definition of “a leader.” Career Center 17 Louisville Cardinals
