Tonight, following the Live Auction, we ask that you raise your bid paddle to support a very special need of the school called the The Guardian Angel Fund. The money we raise tonight will help Mercy families that experience an unforeseen crisis that affects their ability to pay tuition. Such events may include the loss of an immediate family member, loss of employment, serious medical issues or natural disaster. To give an example of the type of need this fund will meet, junior Kara Thomas will share her family’s struggle through hard times and how Mercy was able to step in to help. The Guardian Angel Fund will ensure this type of assistance will always be in place for our wonderful Mercy families. Each basket will have a corresponding Bingo card with 25 Bingo squares. For $10 a number, you may purchase a chance to be a Basket Bingo winner.     Cardinal Tradition Louisville Basketball Louisville Basketball Tradition asketball is special to Kentuckians. The sport B permeates everyday life from offices to farm- lands, from coal mines to neighborhood drug stores. It is more than just a sport played in the cold winter months. It is a source of pride filled year-round with anticipation, hope and celebration. Kentuckians love their basketball, and the tradition-rich University of Louisville program has supplied its fans with one of the nation’s finest products for decades. Legendary coach Bernard “Peck” Hickman, a Basketball Hall of Fame nominee, arrived on the UofL campus in 1944 to begin a remarkable string of 46 consecutive winning seasons. For 23 seasons, Hickman laid an impressive foundation for UofL. John Dromo, an assistant coach under Hickman for 19 years, continued the Louisville program in outstanding fashion following Hickman’s retirement. For 30 years, Denny Crum followed the same path of success that Hickman and Dromo both walked, guiding the Cardinals to even higher acclaim. Now, Coach Rick Pitino energized a re-emergence in building upon the rich UofL tradition in his 16 years, guiding the Cardinals to the 2013 NCAA championship, NCAA Final Fours in 2005 and 2012 and the NCAA Elite Eight five of the past 10 sea- sons. The Louisville Grays hosted the first baseball game played under standard rules 6 west of the Alleghenies, where they defeated the Nashville Cumberlands. When 7 Louisville businessman Walter Haldeman and others formed the National League in 8 1876, this Louisville club was a charter member. Kentucky has not been represented by a 9 major league team since the turn of the 20th century when the Louisville Colonels 10 switched to the minor league, but minor league baseball has flourished in the state. More 11 than 200 Kentucky natives have played major league baseball and four Kentuckians have 12 been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame: Earl Combs, A.B. "Happy" Chandler, Jim 13 Bunning, and Harold "Pee Wee" Reese.
