Is there really feral swine in Michigan? According to the DNR, there are. They say that there were not any swine thirty years ago though. Feral swine are considered a nuisance. Yes, it is legal to shoot these wild hogs, but you can only shoot them during a hunting season or if they’re damaging livestock. You do need a legal hunting license at the time that you shoot them or a con- cealed pistol permit, unless the hog is on private property that is yours or you have permission to. Feral swine are not native to America, they are a combination of Eurasian and escaped do- mestic pigs. They were actually brought to America in 1539 by a Spanish explorer Hernando Desoto, he raised the hogs in Florida. The U.S. Department of Agriculture stated that there were over 4 million feral swine, This wild bore was captured in and millions of dollars of damage done to farmers over 500 Midland County, Michigan. years ago. These feral swine also carry and transmit diseases to other animals, such as livestock and humans. They cause ex- treme damage to forests, water sources, and can be a menace to farmers. So if you see a wild hog damaging anything of yours, make sure you take care of it.
