Cheerleaders The University of Louisville coed cheerleading squad has won 17 National Cheerleading Association Championships (1985, '86, '89, '92, '94, '96, '98, '99, '03, '04, '05, '06, '07, '08, '09, ’11, ‘16), including nine of the last 14. The Cards' all-girl squad has won 12 championships (2001-05, '07-'09, ‘11-12, ‘15, ‘16), including seven of the last nine titles. UofL also won the Small Coed national competition nine times (2005, ‘06, ‘08, ‘09, ‘11, ‘13, ‘14, ‘15). The Cardinals won their fourth USA Cheer stunt national championship in 2016. Ladybirds The University of Louisville Ladybirds dance team has won 13 national titles. The Ladybirds have won eight of the last nine national competitions, including the last three years, in the National Cheerleading Association Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Laydbirds also added the 2014 and 2016 Hip Hop national title to their trophy case. UofL won the Universal Dance Association title in 1995 and 1997. The Ladybirds have long been successful, placing in the top five in their national competition 21 of the last 27 years. The group is under the direction of Sheryl Knight and Todd Sharp. Cardinal Pride Pep Band The Cardinal Pride Pep Band is in its eighth year under the oversight of Cardinal Athletics. Under the direction of Al Greener, the musical cheerleaders are a highly visible source of spirit and enthusiasm at Cardinal basketball events. In addition to U of L men's basketball, the pep band performs at an abundance of athletic events. The 1981-82 edition of the Cardinal Pep Band Pep Band received special recognition as the nation's best as chosen by NBC-TV analyst Al McGuire.
