First and foremost, I would like to thank Oxford University Press and the terric Susan Ferber and Alexandra Dauler for believing in this project when it rst landed on their desks. I am especially indebted to the two anonymous reviewers who gave cru- cial suggestions and encouraging comments that have contributed tremendously in transforming an interdisciplinary, multi-archival project into a proper book manuscript. The majority of the research was funded by grants from the University of Pennsylvania and its School of Arts and Sciences. The Penn Program on De- mocracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism Graduate Fellowship allowed me a carefree year of writing and welcomed me into an inspiring interdisciplinary setting. I owe much as well to the support of Thomas Childers, Kathy Peiss, Paul Betts, and Catriona MacLeod whose comments and encouragement were par- ticularly valuable in developing this book manuscript. At King’s College Lon- don, I not only found a new intellectual home at the departments of German and of European and International Studies but also a thriving interdisciplinary environment that supported my continued research on this book by funding frequent visits to archives in Germany. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise children, and it takes equally as many people to nish a book project of transnational scope. During my research in Germany, a number of people provided me with invaluable support. First, I would like to thank the friendly sta of the Bundesarchiv in Koblenz and Ber- lin for their help in locating rare materials. Kerstin Schenke and Gisela Haker have greatly assisted my research and led extensive requests on my behalf for early document access. Special thanks go to Helge Aszmoneit at the Rat für Formgebung in Frankfurt who provided me with personal contacts and expert knowledge about all things design in Germany. The sta of the Politische Ar- chiv at the Foreign Oce of the Federal Republic helped tirelessly with tracing early postwar-era les, while sta at the Werkbund Archiv der Dinge in Berlin, the Staatsarchiv Dresden, and the Stadtarchiv Stuttgart oered their expertise xi xii Acknowledgments in lling in gaps in the national record. Similarly, I am grateful to the founda- tion Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland Berlin for the op- portunity to peruse their Sammlung industrielle Gestaltung, a treasure trove documenting GDR industrial design initiatives. Special thanks go to Thorsten Krause and Anja Schubert, who helped with locating visual materials under complicated circumstances. Helen Streilein oered support at the archive of the Association for Consumption, Market and Sales Research in Nuremberg. I am indebted to Uta Brandes, Michael Blank, Axel Bruchhäuser, Michael Erlho, Peter Frank, Rolf Heide, Karin Hirdina, Günther Höhne, Rudolf Horn, Bernd Göbel, Martin Kelm, Karin Kirsch, Lore Kramer, Peter Maly, Detlef Mika, Her- bert and Rotraud Pohl, and Renate Sigwart who generously invited me into their homes and workplaces. Their indispensable personal accounts oered valuable insights into the practice of design in Cold War Germany. The generous support of the furniture production and retail companies Deutsche Werkstätten Helle- rau, Interlübke, Möbel Wallach, Hülsta, Tecta, and Walter Knoll provided the opportunity to see rsthand what I was writing about. In England, I was assisted by the knowledgeable sta of the University of Brighton Design Archives in researching the institutional nature of German Cold War design globally. With- out the seless and enthusiastic support from these institutions and individuals, this book would have never come into being. Early dras of book chapters have received feedback from colleagues on nu- merous occasions, among them panels at annual conferences of the German Studies Association and the American Historical Association, colloquia and research seminars at Freie Universität

The Importance of Osthandel: West German-Soviet Trade and the End of the Cold War, 1969-1991 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Charles William Carter, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2012 Dissertation Committee: Professor Carole Fink, Advisor Professor Mansel Blackford Professor Peter Hahn Copyright by Charles William Carter 2012 Abstract Although the 1970s was the era of U.S.-Soviet détente, the decade also saw West Germany implement its own form of détente: Ostpolitik. Trade with the Soviet Union (Osthandel) was a major feature of Ostpolitik. Osthandel, whose main feature was the development of the Soviet energy-export infrastructure, was part of a broader West German effort aimed at promoting intimate interaction with the Soviets in order to reduce tension and resolve outstanding Cold War issues. Thanks to Osthandel, West Germany became the USSR’s most important capitalist trading partner, and several oil and natural gas pipelines came into existence because of the work of such firms as Mannesmann and Thyssen. At the same time, Moscow’s growing emphasis on developing energy for exports was not a prudent move. A lack of economic diversification resulted, a development that helped devastate the USSR’s economy after the oil price collapse of 1986 and, in the process, destabilize the communist bloc. Against this backdrop, the goals of some West German Ostpolitik advocates—especially German reunification and a peaceful resolution to the Cold War—occurred. ii Dedication Dedicated to my father, Charles William Carter iii Acknowledgements This project has been several years in the making, and many individuals have contributed to its completion.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 x2 Abstract For most of West Germany's history, the FDP has been the smallest party in the German system. However, in relation to their numerical weakness, the Liberals have exerted a disproportionally large influence on German foreign policy, especially in the field of Ostpolitik/German policy. With a special emphasis on the years 1974-1990 and on Hans- Dietrich Genscher's role as Foreign Minister, this dissertation examines the question how the FDP, at times barely making it into the Bundestag, could come to have such a strong impact on German Ostpolitik. Equally, this study is concerned with the constraints on the Free Democrats' freedom of manoeuvre in foreign policy. The following parameters are investigated to explain and define the FDP's capacities for action in foreign policy: (1) the impact of international relations, (2) the domestic context, and (3) the historical- ideological aspects of liberal foreign policy.

The London School of Economics and Political Science , , Economic Power and Political Leadership: The Federal Republic, the West and the Re-shaping o/the International Economic System, 1972-1976 Elizabeth Jane Benning A thesis submitted to the Department of Intemational History of the London School of Economics for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, London, January 2011 1 Declaration I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work other than where I have clearly indicated that it is the work of others (in which case the extent of any work carried out jointly by me and any other person is clearly identified in it). This thesis may not be reproduced without the prior written consent of the author. I warrant that this authorization does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. 2 Abstract This thesis explores the role the Federal Republic of Germany played in the transformation of the Western international economic system between 1972 and 1976. It has two main aims: first, it examines Bonn's activities in the shaping of the Western response to the collapse of the Bretton Woods monetary system, the first oil crisis 1973174 and the 1975 world recession; and second, it studies the effect of these actions on West Germany's political position in the Western alliance. As will be shown, Bonn was able to have a significant impact via four means: an ability to manage its economic and political goals; clever use of its economic strength; the adoption of a mediating role among its Western allies, above all the United States and France; and the strong political leadership of Helmut Schmidt (as finance minister, then chancellor).

  • Central Europe
Central Europe Federal Republic of Germany Domestic Affairs J_/LECTION LOSSES AND internal government scandals in 1985 presented Chancellor Helmut Kohl with the biggest setbacks he had faced since taking office in 1982. Even his coveted "reconciliation" meeting with U.S. president Ronald Reagan at Bitburg in May, surrounded as it was by controversy, failed to bolster his sagging popularity. In two important state elections, Kohl's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) lost to the left-of-center Social Democratic party (SPD). In the Saarland on March 10 the SPD won 49.2 percent of the vote, followed by the CDU (37.3 percent), the Free Democratic party (FDP) (10 percent), and the Greens party (2.5 percent). State elections in North Rhine-Westphalia on May 12 were swept by the ruling SPD, which obtained an absolute majority (52.1 percent), followed by CDU (36.5 percent), FDP (6 percent), and the Greens (4.6 percent). The newly elected head of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Rau, was nominated by the SPD to run against Kohl for the chancellorship in the 1987 general elections. Kohl's prestige was further shaken by an espionage scandal and by continuing revelations of corruption and illegal tax deals involving both political parties and prominent individuals. Otto Graf LambsdorfF, the West German economic minister who was forced to resign in 1984, went on trial in Bonn, together with his predeces- sor, Hans Friderichs, and former Flick manager Eberhard von Brauchitsch, on charges of bribery and corruption. The trial continued into 1986. The announcement in December by Friedrich Karl Flick that the industrial conglomerate he headed would be taken over by Deutsche Bank, the state's largest financial institution, for DM 5 billion, reopened the issue of Flick's failure to make good on his promise to pay 5 to 8 million marks as indemnification to former Jewish slave workers in Flick enterprises during World War II.

This summit commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus on American territory on October 12, 1492 – since then the fortunes of the European and the American continents have been constantly connected. This tradition was only interrupted by World War II and the troubled post-war years. Since 1991 the “Day of Latin America” is usually celebrated in the first half of October. This conference alternately takes place in Hamburg or in another large German city. This event consists of one day of conferences on Latin America in general, another day of conferences on a specific country and finally a gala dinner, which is an excellent opportunity to meet and exchange information and ideas with other LAV members and with representatives of the diplomatic, political and business sectors from Latin America, Germany and Europe in general.
