Job Title: Exhibitions Manager (Maternity Cover)

Working hours: Full-time; 40 hours per week, will include some evening and weekend work

Term: Fixed term — 10 months

Salary: Band D £30,000 - £35,000 per annum

Department: Programme and Engagement

Reports to: Head of Programme and Engagement

Responsible for: Two Exhibitions Co-ordinators, Programme and Engagement Assistant, Volunteers

Works closely with: Head of Programme and Engagement, Programme and Engagement Department, Operations Department, Senior Leadership Team, External contractors

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced Exhibitions Manager to join the Programme and Engagement Department.

The department consists of an exhibitions team and a learning and engagement team.

You will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality international exhibitions, the smooth operational running of the exhibitions team, overseeing the workflow and will provide specialist advice relating to loan agreements, insurance, indemnity and other registrarial knowledge. MAIN DUTIES

EXHIBITION TEAM MANAGEMENT

• Oversee the department workflow to ensure that we are working in a consistent manner across projects and continue to refine our working practices to maximise efficiency and achieve successful project outcomes • Responsible for developing and implementing internal procedures for the department and being a point of escalation and problem solving for key issues. • Line management and development of two Exhibition Co-ordinators and Programme and Engagement Assistant • Oversee and be main point of contact for departmental compliance with external bodies such as ACE and DCMS • Provide in-house training required depending on the needs of the team • Oversee the project delivery of all exhibitions, supporting the Exhibition Co-ordinator appointed to each exhibition to ensure successful project management. • Support the Head of Programme and Engagement with early planning stages, write initial exhibition budgets, schedules and contribute to feasibility studies. • Lead the initial concept stage of exhibitions • Relationship management with external exhibition curators and external partners • Oversee development of exhibition interpretation, ensuring this is in line with audience targets • Develop and maintain exhibition budgets with the Exhibition Co-ordinator and Head of Programme and Engagement • Work closely with the Creative Producer to ensure design workflows for catalogue and exhibition are in line with the overall workflow and project timetables • Work interdepartmentally to ensure correct procedures are followed by all staff with regards to all temporary exhibitions • Represent the Exhibition Function and DPG in general at meetings and events when necessary

REGISTRAR

• Oversee the loan negotiation, logistical planning, indemnity/insurance, provenance sign off, transport, installation/de-installation and object care of Picture Gallery exhibitions. • Provide advice on and undertake risk management for the Senior Leadership Team on registrarial matters relating to loans in to the exhibition programme. • Advise on conservation/environmental concerns within the Exhibitions Function, working closely with Operations and Curatorial departments • Advise on the appointment of specialist contractors such as transport agents, art handlers, conservators/framers. • Named responsible person for NIRU for the Gallery, responsible for overseeing NIRU procedures • Member of the Gallery’s Salvage Team, oversee salvage procedures • Condition checking, Couriering and Art Handling duties when required The 2019 Pavilion ‘The Colour Palace’

PERSON SPECIFICATION

You will have....

• Museum professional with extensive experience (3-5 years minimum) as a registrar or exhibitions manager at an accredited museum or gallery, with a particular focus on international temporary exhibitions • High level of experience in negotiating international loans in to temporary exhibitions including: — Loan agreements/lender requirements — British Government Indemnity — Commercial Insurance • High level of understanding/experience of Due Diligence and Immunity from Seizure • Line management experience • Significant experience of working to museum standards for collections care, transportation, packing, art handling, environmental monitoring and known consigner practices. • Experience of interpretation and understanding diverse audience needs • Highly organised, able to prioritise varied and busy workload, ability to effectively manage workload to deadlines • Helpful and positive solution-based attitude, ability to work within a team and across departments • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Willingness to work flexible hours as required by the schedule

Desirable Attributes...

Annual Leave:

25 days’ holiday per year, statutory Bank Holidays. The Gallery also offers all staff two discretionary bonus days as well as their birthday as annual leave

Pension:

Salary:

£30,000-35,000 per annum dependent on experience
