Thank you for your interest in the role of Trustee at . We are delighted you are considering joining us and you will be doing so at a pivotal point for the Gallery with several exciting and important new projects on the horizon.

Dulwich Picture Gallery, founded in 1811, is the world’s first purpose-built public gallery. We care for and display our outstanding collection of paintings within Sir ’s pioneering architecture. As an independent gallery, we remain true to our founders’ purpose of presenting art ‘for the inspection of the publick’ while engaging as many people as possible, of all ages and backgrounds, through our creative programme.

We are engaged in a continuous process of planning, delivery, evaluation, and development in order to unlock the Gallery’s unique potential: our location, art and people. Our mission is underpinned by our vision to be an inspirational cultural destination for everybody - unlocking fresh perspectives through the art of the past and present.

I joined as Chair four years ago and appointed our Sackler Director, Jennifer Scott, in April 2017. I am proud to say we have a strong and comprehensive range of skills on our board, and individuals who are highly committed to enabling the gallery to flourish and ensure more people have the opportunity to engage with our collection and programme. We work closely and collaboratively with our energetic and forward-thinking leadership team and we seek individuals who are collegiate, and team oriented in their approach.

We are now looking for two new Trustees. This includes an individual with the strategic and relationship building skills, high level networks and connections to proactively support our fundraising activity and someone with senior legal expertise, preferably with additional experience in planning.

We are encouraging applications from people with a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds to ensure the Board truly represents the community it serves.

ABOUT THE DULWICH PICTURE GALLERY

Who We Are: Dulwich Picture Gallery, founded in 1811, is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery. We care for and display our outstanding collection of Old Master paintings within Sir John Soane’s pioneering architecture. As an independent gallery, we remain true to our founders’ purpose of presenting art ‘for the inspection of the publick’ by engaging as many people as possible, of all ages and backgrounds, through our innovative interpretation and dynamic programme.

Today the Gallery is a vibrant cultural hub hosting some of the UK’s leading exhibitions alongside its collection of masterpieces. Against this unique backdrop it stages a wide-ranging programme of public events, practical art and community engagement.

We receive no regular public funding and to help our creative work to continue we raise a large proportion of our income through fundraising. This encompasses regular support through our Friends and Patrons schemes as well as funding from trusts and foundations, individual giving and corporate support. With a recently appointed new Head of Development we are spearheading a new fundraising strategy which will be vital in helping us realise our future plans.

Our Board

Professor Evelyn Welch MBE (Chair of Trustees) Professor Evelyn Welch is an art historian, author, and senior public leader. Since 2013 she has been Vice-Principal ( and Sciences) at King’s College, University of . She studied History and Literature at Harvard University and then went on to gain her PhD from The Warburg Institute. She has held positions at the Universities of Essex, the Warburg Institute, Birkbeck, Sussex and Queen Mary, University of London, and has been involved in the development of the V&A’s Medieval and Renaissance Galleries and the Europe, 1600-1800 galleries. Prof Welch is currently Chair of the Warburg Institute Advisory Council and sits on the Advisory Board.

Evelyn lives in South East London and is mother to three children including singer and song-writer Florence Welch, frontwoman of the English rock band Florence and the Machine.

Mark Andrews From 1991 - 2011 Mark Andrews he was the head of the Restructuring & Insolvency Group in the UK at SNR Denton. He was Chairman of Wilde Sapte from 1995 until 2000 and sat on the Firm's board for most of his last eighteen years in professional legal practice. Since his retirement, Mark has held a number of consultancies and non- executive board positions including Pimlico Opera, The Grange Park Opera Endowment Fund and Dentons Ukmea LLP Charitable Trust. He is Chair of Trustees at the Crescent Support Group and at Central YMCA.

Stefan Turnbull Stefan co-founded Urban Evolution Ltd in 1996, a residential and commercial property development business, focused on Central London. In 2005, he set up Cubitt House Ltd, a successful hospitality business. The business has grown and now employs over 250 staff across four award-winning public houses in Central London. Stefan sold a majority stake to a group of Private Investors in December 2015 but remains an active Director and Shareholder. He has a number of other significant investments across the Technology, Property and Hospitality sectors. Stefan lives in Dulwich with his wife, Gosia, and their three children.

Johnny Van Haeften Johnny Van Haeften is the owner and founder of Johnny Van Haeften Ltd. and the Van Haeften Gallery specialising exclusively in Dutch and Flemish Old Masters Paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries. Johnny formerly worked at Christies in the Press Office and Stamp Department from 1969-1977. Johnny Van Haeften is an Executive Committee member of The European Foundation (TEFAF) and is a member of the Reviewing Committee for the Export of Works of Art. He was formerly Vice-Chairman of the Society of London Art Dealers, Council Member of the British Antique Dealers Association, and Member of the Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair Executive Committee.

Crispin Southgate Crispin Southgate is one of the founding directors of Institutional Investment Advisors Limited, advising on and arranging investments for insurers, banks and pension funds, Crispin is also a member of the Basel FSB’s Enhanced Disclosure Task Force and the Corporate Reporting Users Forum. He has also served on the Risk Working Group of the FRC/Board for Actuarial Standards and the Employee Benefits Working Group of the IASB. Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in 1980, he spent over 20 years in investment banking with Charterhouse, SG Warburg and latterly as a managing director and European Credit Strategist of Merrill Lynch.

Benedict Brogan Benedict Brogan is currently Group Public Affairs Director at Lloyds Banking Group. He had a long-standing career in political journalism, holding several senior positions, most recently as Deputy Editor and Chief Political Commentator for The Daily Telegraph and previously as Political Editor for the Daily Mail.

Sian Williams Sian Williams is a chartered accountant with over 20 years’ experience in the sector. She previously held the position of Director of Finance and Resources at both and the V&A as well as a non-executive role as a Trustee of Global Giving Ltd. Sian is currently Programme Director for The ’s large capital programme, the ‘One Collection’ project.

Janet Vitmayer DBE Janet Vitmayer was CEO of the and Gardens from 1998 - 2018. She led a series of successful capital developments and fundraising campaigns at the Horniman, resulting in the transformation of its galleries, buildings and Gardens. Janet has chaired the Wellcome Trust Culture and Society Capital Awards Committee and the Women Leaders in Network. She has served on expert panels and numerous museum boards including: Visitor University of Oxford (Pitt Rivers); Trustee ; Trustee Collections Trust; HLF Expert Panel; Project Board for . She is a trustee of the Hunterian Collection at the Royal College of Surgeons London, and the Florence Nightingale Museum.

Dr Joseph Spence Joseph Spence has been Master of since 2009. He was Headmaster at Oakham School from 2002, and taught at Eton College 1992-2002. He jointly leads Schools Learning Partnership (SSLP), a collaboration of the senior maintained and independent schools in the borough. He is a trustee of The Art Room, Place2Be, the Inspiring Future Foundation and the Mark Evison Foundation. He is the Foundation Schools Co-opted Trustee for Dulwich Picture Gallery. His three-year term commenced in September 2020.

Our Directorate

Jennifer Scott, The Sackler Director Jennifer Scott has been The Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery since April 2017, and in that time has led the Gallery in exciting new directions, establishing a fresh and inclusive vision for the future. Jennifer was formerly Director of the Holburne Museum, Bath, and Curator of Paintings at Trust having previously worked in the curatorial departments of the , London and National Museums Liverpool. She is a Member of the Collections Board at Compton Verney House and Gardens, Governor of Alleyn’s School, Member of the Masterpiece Art Fair Appeals Committee, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a Fellow Commoner of Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge.

Chantelle Culshaw, Deputy Director Chantelle became Deputy Director in 2018 having joined the Gallery in 2014 as Director of Development. She was previously Development Director at the Donmar Warehouse and the Royal Exchange Theatre and worked in the Development team at The Lowry. She is Chair of the Christina Smith Foundation and a Trustee of the Mark Evison Foundation.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Overall responsibility:

Work as a member of the Board to contribute experience, expertise and insight and to add value to strategic development and governance of Dulwich Picture Gallery to ensure that it continues to be a dynamic, robust and sustainable organisation and remains true to its vision:

To be an inspirational cultural destination for everybody – unlocking fresh perspectives through the art of the past and present.

Key responsibilities

Dulwich Picture Gallery is a corporate entity. The Trustees are all non-executive directors of the company. All our Trustees:

• Are committed to Dulwich Picture Gallery and act in its interests at all times, safeguarding our reputation and values and ensuring that we pursue and deliver our charitable objects and purpose;

• Have an understanding of the legal and regulatory duties of trustees and ensure that Dulwich Picture Gallery complies with its Articles of Association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation and regulation;

• Maintain an awareness of our organisation and the environment in which we operate and contribute to our continuing development;

• Bring positive, independent judgement and the ability to think creatively and to constructively challenge while securing the continued sustainability of our charity;

• Work effectively as a member of the Board and recognise, respect and welcome diverse, different and, at times, conflicting views of colleagues;

• Use their specialist knowledge and skills to add value to Dulwich Picture Gallery’s work and to help to build and grow partnerships and relationships;

• Act as ambassadors for Dulwich Picture Gallery to promote its work and support the development of key relationships;

• Prepare for, attend and participate actively in Board and subcommittee meetings and in support of allocated lead roles, working groups or other governance functions;

• Take responsibility for their own learning and development and participate in the development of the board as a whole;

• Maintain the respect of beneficiaries, other stakeholders and the public by behaving with integrity and in line with Dulwich Picture Gallery’s values;

• Will maintain confidentiality about any sensitive and confidential information received as a Trustee.

A Trustee has the following legal obligations that should be understood and complied with:

a. To act rationally, sensibly, carefully and with proper advice in financial and other matters, ensuring that assets are not misused but applied to the charitable objects of Dulwich Picture Gallery and that investments are handled properly. b. Not to enter into financial commitment unless reasonably sure that Dulwich Picture Gallery will have adequate funds to meet any payments due. c. Not to benefit personally, either directly or indirectly, except in the strictly limited and defined ways that are laid out in the Memorandum and Articles of Association. E.g. reasonable and proper out-of-pocket expenses. d. Not to make a profit out of the position of trust or to be in a position where the duties and responsibilities as a Trustee might conflict with personal interests. e. Not to charge for time, trouble or expertise in administering the work of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, nor to derive any benefit from it.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

• Understands and is committed to the culture, ethos and purpose of Dulwich Picture Gallery;

• Understands leadership and/or governance within the charity or not-for-profit sector. You do not have to have been a trustee before;

• Experience of successfully dealing with strategic issues, interpreting complex information and business planning;

• Ability to act as a credible ambassador for an organisation and able to make connections with other organisations, communities and funders to enable Dulwich Picture Gallery to achieve its objectives;

• We are particularly keen to hear from people who identify as: Black; Asian; minority ethnic; disabled; LGBTQ+. These groups are currently underrepresented in our organisation.

• We are particularly looking for applicants who will bring experience/skills in one or more of the following areas:

I. Senior individuals who bring current networks and skills to actively support our fundraising initiatives, either as a philanthropist, senior business figure, or someone who understands securing high level giving/fundraising in a similar context. II. Senior legal experience, preferably with planning expertise.

• Excellent communication and listening skills – able to communicate concepts and issues effectively;

• Able to self-manage effectively to fulfil the requirements of this role;

• Is able to commit, flexibly, the time and attention to learn about and contribute to Dulwich Picture Gallery’s work.

Trustee Terms and Conditions

Time Commitment The standard role of Trustee will require a time commitment of approximately 12 days per annum for individuals who do not take on committee chairmanship or officer (Vice- Chair/Treasurer) roles.

This would include: • 4 Board meetings per annum • 1 strategy day per annum • 4 Sub-Committee meetings per annum. Sub-Committees include: o Finance and Audit Committee o Nominations Committee o Collection and Programme Advisory Committee o Estates and Audiences Advisory Committee • Mentoring and support of the Directorate and Senior Leadership Team and ad-hoc working groups where necessary • Preparation for meetings including reading time for all papers

• Contact with the Chair, other trustees and Directorate outside of meetings, including board development and appraisal, participating in induction and regular training • Annual Board Development/Strategy Review Day • Trustees are invited to carry out formal and informal engagements in support of the gallery

For those who have committee chairmanship/officer (Vice-Chair/Treasurer) roles there would be an additional time commitment of approximately an additional day each quarter, i.e. a total of approximately 14 days a year, for example supporting audits, or meeting lead executive team members.

Term of office Trustees appointed for a first term of 5 years. After this, they may be re-elected by the Board for a second term of 3 years. In exceptional circumstances, with the unanimous approval of the Board, a Trustee may be re-elected for a third term of 3 years.

These positions are unremunerated but reasonable expenses are payable
