Paranoid machines and influenceable subjects: conspiracy, knowledge and subjectivities in algorithmic networks.. Thesis (Doctorate in Communication and Culture) – Escola de Comunicação, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 2020. The thesis focuses on the self-titled group Targeted Individuals (TIs), or Indivíduos-Alvo, in Portuguese. Congregating on websites, blogs and digital social networks, TIs share the belief that they are victims of manipulation and mind control through electronic devices and digital technologies. Analysis of content created by this group and disseminated on YouTube channels affords us a grasp on how their perception of technological influence is not circumscribed to private psychic fantasies and ravings, but is framed as an attempt to make sense of the centrality of platforms and murky algorithmic mediations in the reorganization of social and subjective lives. The hypothesis developed here is that the growing proliferation of paranoid and conspiratorial narratives is not only due to the increasing impossibility of distinguishing between truth and lies and to the chaos and informational insecurity arising from epistemological and political disputes in public debate. It is also the result of investments by technology companies in techniques and procedures for producing knowledge about individuals and populations in order to influence, manage and intervene in their behavior. The modes of paranoid perception and subjectivity are thus related to the emergence of the figure of the influenceable subject. The thesis intends to show that the notion of the subjects' influenceability by data and algorithms articulates paranoid ways of elaborating the meaning of regimes of power, knowledge and modes of being in algorithmic networks of data oriented capitalism. Dimensions related, respectively, to conspiracy, to the belief in technoscientific effectiveness and in knowledge regimes built from digital data, and to modes of subjectivation and self-constitution in the face of the promise of personalization of automated systems for recommending and directing content.

  • The Conquest of Youtube
The Conquest of YouTube COUNTER-IDEOLOGICAL STRATEGIES IN A NEW DIGITAL LEFT NOAH SAARELA GNVM03 VT20 Genusvetenskapliga Institutionen, Lunds Universitet Handledare: Ov Cristian Norocel Abstract Over the last few years, the user-generated video-sharing online platform YouTube has been recognized by the academia as well as mainstream media as an arena for predominately right- wing political content, and radicalizing far-right extremism in particular. This thesis introduces and explores the construction of a new digital left in the left-wing phenomenon LeftTube on YouTube. Through using critical feminist discourse analysis, it examines counter-ideological strategies to alt-right beliefs on gender and sexuality in 21 videos by the four popular content creators within the community. It analyses counter-speech tactics and alternatives to far-right constructions of masculinity as well as the possibilities of left-wing politics in the online community, concluding that LeftTube can be understood as a left-wing critical knowledge project adapted to an online audience to promote leftist feminist perspectives with emancipatory goals. • Toward a New Climate Rhetoric: Appropriating Authority, Mobilising Anger and Radical Politics to Activate the Alarmed Youth
Toward a new climate rhetoric: Appropriating authority, mobilising anger and radical politics to activate the alarmed youth An exegesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Communication Studies Dominic Pink 2020 ii Abstract The climate and ecological crises are the most urgent existential threats facing humanity. Creative communication approaches on this topic are required to counter the ideological constraints of mainstream news media and reticence of climate communicators. This exploratory research project aimed to develop a radical new rhetoric, imagining a youth- fronted web show–called ‘House on Fire’–targeted to young people alarmed by the crises. The aim was realised by merging popular ecological and leftist literature, appropriating the authority and legitimacy of the television news studio, and harnessing the emotional power of anger. Research-led practice was chosen to subjectively pursue this creative work, with a production phase incorporating screen-writing exercises, a pilot production to test different emotional frames, and a longer production which synthesised these frames. These productions took place in the AUT studio, utilising student volunteers as presenters and crew. Heuristic inquiry provided the framework to reflect upon the research and draw out core themes. Key findings which emerged from this, shared as stories from the production, included: the rhetorical force of anger as an emotional frame; no neutral exists in the studio space, and its conventions are inherently formal; it is possible to appropriate the studio for activist communication, however, technical constraints arise and diligent adaptations are necessary; the studio can be a space for conducting creative research.

  • The Alt-Right's Platformization of Fascism and a New Left's Digital
D E M O C R A T I C C O M M U N I Q U É The Alt-Right’s Platformization of Fascism and a New Left’s Digital United Front Tanner Mirrlees Platforms constitute a political communications battlespace in which a plurality of social actors—from Left to Right—struggle for recognition and attention, try to organize consent to their ideologies, and seek to influence how people think and behave. In the spirit of this special issue’s investigation of the tactical political uses of new media to bring about social change, this article demonstrates how contemporary platforms are a space of battle, fought over by the alt- right’s white nationalist fascists and a new Left’s “digital united front.” Drawing upon numerous examples of fascist and antifascist tactical interventions across the platforms, this article is optimistic that the power of the alt-right to win hearts and minds may be waning due to the growth and widespread support for the Left’s digital united front. To this end, this article’s first section contextualizes the revival of the hard Right’s “authoritarian populism” under the auspices of the US Trump presidency and defines the contemporary “alt-right.” The article’s second section surveys the alt-right’s political uses of platforms, and highlights some of these platforms’ affordances to the alt-right’s reach and ideological influence. The third section conceptualizes the Left’s “digital united front,” and catalogues some of its tactics for countering platform fascists: no-platforming, doxing, video ideology critique, and memes.
