Music in The Heart of Manila: Quiapo from the Colonial Period to Contemporary Times: Tradition, Change, Continuity Ma. Patricia Brillantes-Silvestre A brief history of Quiapo Quiapo is a key district of Manila, having as its boundaries the winding Pasig River and the districts of Sta. Cruz, San Miguel and Sampaloc. Its name comes from a floating water lily specie called kiyapo (Pistia stratiotes), with thick, light-green leaves, similar to a tiny, open cabbage. Pre-1800 maps of Manila show Quiapo as originally a cluster of islands with swampy lands and shallow waters (Andrade 2006, 40 in Zialcita), the perfect breeding place for the plant that gave its name to the district. Quiapo’s recorded history began in 1578 with the arrival of the Franciscans who established their main missionary headquarters in nearby Sta. Ana (Andrade 42), taking Quiapo, then a poor fishing village, into its sheepfold. They founded Quiapo Church and declared its parish as that of St. John the Baptist. The Jesuits arrived in 1581, and the discalced Augustinians in 1622 founded a chapel in honor of San Sebastian, at the site where the present Gothic-style basilica now stands. At about this time there were around 30,000 Chinese living in Manila and its surrounding areas, but the number swiftly increased due to the galleon trade, which brought in Mexican currency in exchange for Chinese silk and other products (Wickberg 1965). The Chinese, noted for their business acumen, had begun to settle in the district when Manila’s business center shifted there in the early 1900s (originally from the Parian/Chinese ghetto beside Intramuros in the 1500s, to Binondo in the 1850s, to Sta.Cruz at the turn of the century). -

Chua Pamantasang De La Salle Maynila Maikling Paglalarawan ng Paksa ng Modyul-Gabay: Nakaugalian nang ilahad ang kasaysayan ng kolonyalismo sa pananaw ng mga opisyal na dokumento ng mga dayuhan at mga kolonyalistang sanaysay na nagpatibay ng kolonyal na mentalidad ng Pilipino na ang Kanluran ay laging daluyan ng ginhawa. Liban pa sa nawalan na ng saysay ang nakaraang ito sa maraming Pilipino dahil hindi nito talaga nasalamin ang kanilang kamalayan. Ang Nasyunalistang Kasaysayan ni Agoncillo, na lalong pinaunlad at pinagpapatuloy ng Pantayong Pananaw, ang nagbukas ng daan na lalong maintindihan ang kasaysayan sa pananaw ng mga Pilipino sa nakalipas na mga taon. Ayon kay Zeus A. Salazar at sa iba pang tagapagtaguyod ng Pantayog Pananaw, ang Kasaysayan ay “salaysay na may saysay para sa sinasalaysayang grupo ng tao.” Sa paglalahad ng kwento mula sa pananaw ng mga lider tungo sa pananaw ng mga namumuhay ng kalinangan—ang mga mamamayan, nais ng module na ito na ipakita ang pag-unlad ng kapuluan mula sa iba’t ibang bayan tungo sa pagiging isang bansa. Ang karanasan ng Conquista at pakikibaka ang nagbuo sa bayan tungo sa kamalayang pambansa, na ang magiging katuparan ay ang Himagsikang Pilipino ng 1896. Sa kasamaang palad, dahil sa Dambuhalang Pagkakahating Pangkalinangan, nagkaroon din ng tunggalian sa loob ng bansa, kaya naman hindi pa rin natatapos ang gawain ng pagbubuo nito tungo sa tunay na kaginhawaan ng mga Pilipino. Flores THE CATTLE CARAVANS OF ANCIENT CABOLOAN (INTERIOR PLAINS OF PANGASINAN): CONNECTING HISTORY, CULTURE AND COMMERCE BY CARTWHEEL Caravan cultures throughout the world depict stories of real jour- neys, discoveries and exploits. They also account for the construction of local histories, territories and market societies. At best, caravan routes map the geoeconomic and the ethnohistoric trail of peoples on the road towards venture capitalism in the earlier centuries. But in the 21st century, the history of caravan cultures remain only in the people’s memory as artefact (or artifi ce?) and which has been romanticized into bioepics or heroic adventures of legendary men caught in the age of material adventurism from the 13th to 16th centuries. In this day of global network and cyber transactions, it is fascinating and at the same time remarkable how the caravan culture still persists in the Philippines. Its persistence as a vestige of feudal past in an era of intensifi ed commercialization and industrialization is indeed indicative of uneven modes of development, as it is symbolic of inter- secting diverse cultures where the rural locale ventures into the national and into the global with far reaching implications on issues of ethnicity and cultural import. The cattle caravans of ancient Caboloan continue to peddle their bamboo-based products from the province of Pangasinan to the highways of Metro Manila. These are the ubiquitous cattle-drawn carriages selling hammocks, bamboo chairs and bookshelves we see in front of SM Fairview, Commonwealth, East and C.P. Garcia Avenues. But not until recently when Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) agents found them illegally parked along national roads thereby considered obstruction to traffi c. -

Philippine history, more especially the historio- graphy of its colonial period, poses some particular problems in serving as the basis from which to fashion an identity suitable to the modern citizens of a nation-state. These problems are not restricted to the Philippines, but the combination of features is certainly specific to the history of that nation and differentiates its historiography from that of others in the region. Attention has long been drawn to the unique geographical location and cultural experi- ence of the islands; indeed D.G.E. Hall even omitted the Philippines from the first edition of his seminal history of Southeast Asia (Hall 1955). But these observations on their own offer no insuperable obstacle to the creation of a national historiography. Far more significant is the lack of appropriate his- torical experiences whose symbolic value make of them suitable rallying points round which a counter-hegemonic and anti-colonial historiography can coalesce and flourish.1 The history of nations is always presented in the form of a narrative, the fulfilment of a project that stretches back over the centuries along which are moments of coming to self-awareness that prove to be decisive in the self- manifestation of national personality (Balibar 1991:86; Bhabha 1990:1). -

It seems fortuitous that Rizal’s date of birth would fall just six days after the celebration of Philippine Independence Day - the proclamation of independence from Spanish rule by General Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite, in 1898. In 1962 then President Diosdado Macapagal decreed the change of date from July 4 to June 12 to reaffirm the primacy of the Filipinos’ right to national self-determination. After more than three generations, we are a people still in quest of the right, instruments, and opportunity to determine ourselves as an autonomous, sovereign and singular nation-state. Either ironical or prescient, Aguinaldo’s proclamation (read in the context of US Special Forces engaged today in fighting Filipino socialists and other progressive elements) contains the kernel of the contradictions that have plagued the ruling elite’s claim to political legitimacy: he invoked the mythical benevolence of the occupying power. -

Born in Calamba, Laguna, Rizal wrote the Noli Me Tangere(Germany in 1887) and El Filibusterismo (Belgium in 1891) During his study and stay at Spain, he became an active member of a newspaper La Solidaridad.And when he went back to Manila, formed his own civic movement, La Liga Filipina. On the five peso coin is Emilio Aguinaldo, first Philippine President, from Kawit, Cavite. He was the one who led the Declaration of Philippine Independence in Malolos, Bulacan, the first republic in Asia. -
