A Filipino Resistance Reading of Joshua 1:1-9 International Voices in Biblical Studies A FILIPINO RESISTANCE READING OF JOSHUA 1:1–9 OF JOSHUA READING A FILIPINO RESISTANCE Lily Fetalsana-Apura uses contextual hermeneutics to offer an alternative interpretation of Joshua 1:1–9 that counters and resists historical-critical and theological readings legitimizing A Filipino Western conquests and imperialism. After outlining exegetical and hermeneutical procedures for contextual interpretation, she reads the Former Prophets in the context of four hundred years of colonial Resistance Reading of victimization and a continuing struggle against neocolonialism by marginalized and exploited communities such as those in the Philippines. She argues that Joshua 1:1–9 exhorts strength and courage against exploitation and domination by empire. Her work Joshua 1:1–9 subvert imperial ideology and that can serve as a model for other work inidentifies contextual themes hermeneutics and concepts of biblical in the texts. My protestant parents (converts by American missionaries) rejected all forms of folk beliefs and practices common in our rural neighborhood and instilled a modern out- look in us along with a love of reading and learning. Open, honest, and respectful discussions about differing views were encouraged in our family. Early in life I realized that no subject or topic, including one’s faithReader’s Di-, is ex- empt from scrutiny.gest Reading materials at home consisted of church literature, , and books from the public library coming from the United States. My parents regaled us with stories of missionary exploits all over the world. American hymnbooks and the English Bible were my early introduction to literature. How I loved hymns. I remember singing through the hymnbooks to the last hymns titled “America, America” which, young as I was, I substi- tuted “My Philippines, dear Philippines.” Even now we still sing “summer and winter and springtime and harvest.” But I only know two seasons: summer and rainy season. I have become proficient in English, as it is the language of learning, as well as in church.The Little Brown Brothers All is well; nothing seemed amiss, until as a nineteen-year-old Bible seminary student I read . It opened my eyes to the atrocities of American occupation of the Philippines and the fact that my faith, a very important aspect of my being, has molded me in the thought and ways of the colonizer. The poverty of my cultural heritage is evident in a home devoid of traditions shared with other Filipinos, though many al of l saintsthese traditions have roots in the Spanish times: kissing of hands, communi- ty fiesta celebrations, beliefs about departed family and relatives, and day practices, to name a few. I cannot even pray in my mother tongue! That summer, I was sent for “gospel team” field exposure to the central highland of Negros Island, Canlaon, a beautiful city with cool climate and abundant crops, owing to the perennial lava flow and spewing of fertile ash by the volcano, and watered by cool waters from verdant forest around. It was also a battleground between communist rebels and the Philippine gov- ernment forces. For the first time, I saw dead bodies of rebel fighters, and I understood the reason why. Few landowning families control land in Canla- on and in most parts of Negros Occidental. The local people rent even the - xi - xii | A Filipino Resistance Reading lots where their homes are built. The majority of them are sugarcane plan- tation workers with no land of their own, even for a small vegetable garden, and were dependent on their pittance daily wage in the plantation. When the sugar stalks are grown, they have no work until harvest, and hunger was their constant lot. But in busy days even children work. While there, news of a man arrested for trespassing a well-fenced land was the talk of the town: he only wanted to pick up a fallen coconut fruit. Being the youngest in a family with three elder brothers, I remember being aware of the oppressive stereotyped view of gender. “You are typical- ly an Asian woman, who cannot sit down and allow men to do housework” (as a European seminar coparticipant commented). That remark made me painfully aware that being raised in a patriarchal household, church, and community made me servile. Even people who love us can be enslaving when they know no better. As a brother had predicted, being a woman, even if I studied in the seminary, I will end being a teacher (though not a kindergarten teacher). All the reading that comes with teaching developed my interest in the Bible particularly the Hebrew Bible. In line with my interest in biblical in- terpretation and faith integration, I came to realize the disruption in Filipino psyche brought by Spanish and American colonization. RODRIGUEZ The Philippine state has popularized the idea of Filipino migrants as the country’s ‘new national heroes’, critically transforming notions of Filipino citizenship and citizenship struggles. As ‘new national heroes’, migrant workers are extended particular kinds of economic and welfare rights while they are abroad even as they are obligated to perform particular kinds of duties to their home state. The author suggests that this transnationalize d citizenship, and the obligations attached to it, becomes a mode by which the Philippine state ultimately disciplines Filipino migrant labor as exible labor. However, as citizenship is extended to Filipinos beyond the borders of the Philippines, the globalizatio n of citizenship rights has enabled migrants to make various kinds of claims on the Philippine state. Indeed, these new transnationa l political strug- gles have given rise not only to migrants’ demands for rights, but to alternative nationalisms and novel notions of citizenship that challenge the Philippine state’s role in the export and commodi cation of migrant workers. Introduction In 1995, Flor Contemplacion, a Singapore-based Filipina domestic worker, was hanged by the Singaporean government for allegedly killing another Filipina domestic worker and the child in her charge. When news about her imminent death reached the Philippines, Filipinos, throughout the nation and around the globe, went to the streets demanding that the Philippine government intervene to prevent Contemplacion’s execution. SIGNED Joanna Long 2 ABSTRACT What do home, family and identity mean for diasporic populations? What kinds of practices, relationships and spaces are involved in making these things come alive on an everyday basis? What does an understanding of this contribute to discourses of Palestinian identity in particular and scholarship on diasporic identity more broadly? These questions are central to this thesis, which is based on qualitative research interviewing Palestinians in family groups and as individuals in their own houses. My findings are discussed in three parts. The first explores notions of al beit (house) and the practices that bring domestic spaces to life. I argue that physical living spaces are enrolled in family practices of identity but that both Arab/Palestinian family life and British domestic space adapt in the process. The second part explores the geographies of Palestinian families, how people negotiate these through everyday practices and how migration has precipitated a re-imagination of family and a reworking of family relationships. The third part explores the dynamics of social groups and collective identity, including the multiple identities and the range of ideas and conversational practices through which Palestinian social relatedness is enacted. I argue that the loss of family proximity can create opportunities for new kinds of meaningful relationships but that family remains an important coordinate for social relations through which historical family geographies of Palestine are reproduced.

These traumas included the repeated invasion of Palestine by various empires/countries, and the Jewish experience of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. This culminated in the 1948 creation of the State of Israel. The newfound State has experienced turmoil since its inception as both identities clashed. The majority-minority power imbalance resulted in inequalities and discrimination against the Palestinian Citizens of Israel (PCI). Discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict tends to assume that the issues of the PCIs are the same as the issues of the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. I believe that the needs of the PCIs are different. Therefore, I have conducted a qualitative case study into possible ways the relationship between the PCIs and the State of Israel shall be improved. To this end, I provide a brief review of the history of the conflict. I explore themes of inequalities and models for change. I analyze the implications of the theories for PCIs and Israelis in the political, social, and economic dimensions. From all these dimensions, I identify opportunities for change. In proposing an ―Agenda for Change,‖ it is my sincere hope that addressing the context of the Israeli-Palestinian relationship may lead to a change in attitude and behaviour that will avoid perpetuating the conflict and its human costs on both sides.

Filipinos work as nurses and caregivers over- seas, serving to be the largest supplier of human resources relating to social support. Literary documents andbooks were analyzed to gather concrete examples of Filipino personality traits and values. Interview surveys were also conducted. The ten most depicted traits were the following: pakikisama, hiya, utang na loob, close family ties, bahala na, amor propio, bayanihan, hospitality, ningas cogon, and respect for elders. These traits are analyzed from a social psychological viewpoint. In Japan, where the birth- rate is decreasing and the population is aging rapidly, the care for theelderly is an extremely urgent socialissue. One of the greatest issues of nursing care is, who is to be the caregiver. Demog- raphically, low birthrate and rapid aging inevitably mean the rapid increase of agedpopulation re- quiring nursing care, and the sharpdecrease of young caregivers. Signs of this problem can already be seen, as evennow there are many cases when an agedperson musttake care of each other. Having lived in America some 30 E years now I am familiar with how people celebrate Independence here—they have parades, barbecues and in the evening fireworks. When we left the Philippines years ago fireworks were banned in the country. I don’t know how it is today. It would be wonderful if Filipinos celebrated Independence Day similar to or better than the usual parades, picnics, barbecues and some fireworks. When I was a kid growing up, Independence Day was observed on July 4th, the day when the United States granted the country independence from American rule. The American flag was finally lowered from government building flagpoles and the Philippine flag was hoisted in its stead. From that day until one day in 1962 the country celebrated Independence Day on the same day the United States celebrated its own Independence Day. If their invasions were separated by wide intervals of time, there is no probability that they were united in their earlier history.
