Early Malay immigrants spread throughout the archipelago, settling among its over seven thousand islands. The mountainous geography and jungle wilderness further isolated early communities, and even the largest islands of Luzon, Mindanao and the Visayas developed a variety of indigenous ethnic groups. Today, the Philippines is home to nine major languages and over a hundred minor dialects, all stemming from the multitude of tribal societies that arose in this period.1 In the centuries after the first humans settled the islands, significant populations of foreign ancestry joined this indigenous mix—merchant sojourners from China and Persia, as well as the agents of colonial governments from Europe, America and Japan. Today, its official languages reflect the ongoing sense of division between Eastern and Western cultural traditions: Filipino (a modified version of Tagalog native to the island of Luzon) and English (the legacy of American colonialism).2 In addition to this ethnic and linguistic diversity, there is the added dimension of religion. Though 80 percent of the nation is Catholic, numerous protestant and animistic religions also retain sizable shares of the total population. Though a national minority, a significant Muslim population dominates the southern island of Mindanao, and ongoing disputes over the matters of government representation and discrimination have developed into a number of nationalistic separatist organizations like the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Abu Sayaff. Despite this immense ethnic and cultural diversity, a strong sense of national identity emerged in the late nineteenth century. A new sense of “Filipinoness” supplanted ethnic and regional bonds as the principle identity of the average Filipino.3 Though in the context of this paper the term “Filipino” refers to the people of the Philippines collectively—regardless of race, religion, language or social class—it is crucial to understand that Filipino as a national categorization did not carry its present day meaning until the late nineteenth century. When strictly addressing the term itself, in relation to its changing meanings and cultural association throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, an italicized “Filipino” shall be used instead. This study seeks to understand how a region so historically divided could come to adopt a single national identity. Examination of the Philippines' three major occupations suggests that the crucial factor that enabled nationalism to take root was colonialism. Over the course of four hundred years, Spain, the United States, and Japan incorporated these isolated cultures under one rule. As a result, the disparate groups developed a common history from the shared experience of colonial exploitation. This redefinition of what it meant to be a Filipino began as a rhetorical tool of the elite, but eventually its use expanded to all corners of Filipino society as a response to colonialism, establishing itself as a popular identity and a necessary component of national resistance. As such, the Philippines provides an interesting perspective on the relationship between a society's national identity and its development as a nation. 3 Benedict Anderson, The Spectre of Comparisons: Nationalism, Southeast Asia and the World (New York: Verso, 2002), 65. 2 Beginning in the 1870s, a strong drive for the colony's full assimilation into Spain emerged. The educated members of the Philippine-born upper class known as the ilustrados, or “enlightened ones,” initiated a massive public writing campaign aimed not only at the policy makers in Spain, but to the international community as a whole. The ilustrados' “Propaganda Movement” initially pushed for social reform and the equal representation of the Philippines as an official province of Spain, not merely as a colony to be exploited and neglected. In the course of their struggle to win philosophical and political support to their cause, the ilustrados introduced a new interpretation of the term Filipino, expanding its meaning from only creole residents (Spanish subjects born in the islands) to encompass all natives of the Philippines, including the Chinese mestizo elite and the indios (indigenous people of Malay ancestry).4 However, because of Spain's inability to implement the desired reforms, the message of the propagandists evolved into a struggle for political sovereignty. Existing historiography is fragmentary and incomplete. Memoirs suffer from limited points of view and personal biases. No academic study has examined the Filipino resistance with a critical and interdisciplinary approach. No comprehensive narrative has yet captured the fighting by 260,000 guerrillas in 277 units across the archipelago. This dissertation begins with the political, economic, social and cultural history of Philippine guerrilla warfare. The diverse Islands connected only through kinship networks. The Americans reluctantly held the Islands against rising Japanese imperial interests and Filipino desires for independence and social justice. World War II revealed the inadequacy of MacArthur’s plans to defend the Islands. The General tepidly prepared for guerrilla operations while Filipinos spontaneously rose in armed resistance. After his departure, the chaotic mix of guerrilla groups were left on their own to battle the Japanese and each other. While guerrilla leaders vied for local power, several obtained radios to contact MacArthur and his headquarters sent submarine-delivered agents with supplies and radios that tie these groups into a united framework. MacArthur’s promise to return kept the resistance alive and dependent on the United States. The repercussions for social revolution would be fatal but the Filipinos’ shared sacrifice revitalized national consciousness and created a sense of deserved nationhood. The guerrillas played a key role in enabling MacArthur’s return.

    UN MUNDO ILUSTRADO José Rizal formó parte del mundo ilustrado que floreció en Filipinas a fines del siglo XIX. En él se incluía una élite de personas educadas en universidades filipinas, que frecuentemente completaban su formación en instituciones europeas. Este grupo de ilustrados, identificados más por su grado de educación que por un único nivel socioeconómico, fue esencial en la formación de una conciencia nacional filipina. Ilustrados fueron pintores como Juan Luna y Novicio o Félix Resurrección Hidalgo, formados en las notables escuelas de dibujo existentes en Manila y especializados en Academias de Bellas Artes europeas. RODRIGUEZ The Philippine state has popularized the idea of Filipino migrants as the country’s ‘new national heroes’, critically transforming notions of Filipino citizenship and citizenship struggles. As ‘new national heroes’, migrant workers are extended particular kinds of economic and welfare rights while they are abroad even as they are obligated to perform particular kinds of duties to their home state. The author suggests that this transnationalize d citizenship, and the obligations attached to it, becomes a mode by which the Philippine state ultimately disciplines Filipino migrant labor as exible labor. However, as citizenship is extended to Filipinos beyond the borders of the Philippines, the globalizatio n of citizenship rights has enabled migrants to make various kinds of claims on the Philippine state. Indeed, these new transnationa l political strug- gles have given rise not only to migrants’ demands for rights, but to alternative nationalisms and novel notions of citizenship that challenge the Philippine state’s role in the export and commodi cation of migrant workers. Introduction In 1995, Flor Contemplacion, a Singapore-based Filipina domestic worker, was hanged by the Singaporean government for allegedly killing another Filipina domestic worker and the child in her charge. When news about her imminent death reached the Philippines, Filipinos, throughout the nation and around the globe, went to the streets demanding that the Philippine government intervene to prevent Contemplacion’s execution. Fearing Philippine– Singapore diplomatic relations would be threatened, then-Philippine President Fidel Ramos was reluctant to intercede despite evidence that may have proved her innocence.

World War II in the Philippines The Legacy of Two Nations©2016 By Bataan Legacy Historical Society Several hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the Philippines, a colony of the United States from 1898 to 1946, was attacked by the Empire of Japan. During the next four years, thou- sands of Filipino and American soldiers died. The entire Philippine nation was ravaged and its capital Ma- nila, once called the Pearl of the Orient, became the second most devastated city during World War II after Warsaw, Poland. Approximately one million civilians perished. Despite so much sacrifice and devastation, on February 20, 1946, just five months after the war ended, the First Supplemental Surplus Appropriation Rescission Act was passed by U.S. Congress which deemed the service of the Filipino soldiers as inactive, making them ineligible for benefits under the G.I. Bill of Rights. To this day, these rights have not been fully -restored and a majority have died without seeing justice. But on July 14, 2016, this mostly forgotten part of U.S. history was brought back to life when the California State Board of Education approved the inclusion of World War II in the Philippines in the revised history curriculum framework for the state. This seminal part of WWII history is now included in the Grade 11 U.S. history (Chapter 16) curriculum framework. The approval is the culmination of many years of hard work from the Filipino community with the support of different organizations across the country.

    Title: Comparison of Spanish Colonization—Latin America and the Philippines Teacher: Anne Sharkey, Huntley High School Summary: This lesson took part as a comparison of the different aspects of the Spanish maritime empires with a comparison of Spanish colonization of Mexico & Cuba to that of the Philippines. The lessons in this unit begin with a basic understanding of each land based empire of the time period 1450-1750 (Russia, Ottomans, China) and then with a movement to the maritime transoceanic empires (Spain, Portugal, France, Britain). This lesson will come after the students already have been introduced to the Spanish colonial empire and the Spanish trade systems through the Atlantic and Pacific. Through this lesson the students will gain an understanding of Spanish systems of colonial rule and control of the peoples and the territories. The evaluation of causes of actions of the Spanish, reactions to native populations, and consequences of Spanish involvement will be discussed with the direct correlation between the social systems and structures created, the influence of the Christian missionaries, the rebellions and conflicts with native populations between the two locations in the Latin American Spanish colonies and the Philippines.
