Adriana Nelli ABSTRACT Triestine migration to Australia is the direct consequence of numerous disputations over the city's political boundaries in the immediate post- World War II period. As such the triestini themselves are not simply part of an overall migratory movement of Italians who took advantage of Australia's post-war immigration program, but their migration is also the reflection of an important period in the history of what today is known as the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.. 1954 marked the beginning of a brief but intense migratory flow from the city of Trieste towards Australia. Following a prolonged period of Anglo-American administration, the city had been returned to Italian jurisdiction once more; and with the dismantling of the Allied caretaker government and the subsequent economic integration of Trieste into the Italian State, a climate of uncertainty and precariousness had left the Triestines psychologically disenchanted and discouraged. -

The idea of "modern tragedy" is important in this sense, since it will explain the transportation of elements of Greek tragedy to literary works of diverse historical periods, with the necessary and natural transformation tragedy went through due to the differences of time, place, culture, etc. In any case, the long-lasting influence of this ancient form of art is a source of a great number of studies The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, published in 1881, is a modern novel which will be analyzed in this dissertation as having a tragic view of life. This can be seen through the actions of the principal character and in the turn of events which occur. The modern elements of tragedy present in the novel will be related to the classical ones to analyze the dilemma the heroine, Isabel Archer, faces, and to describe the ambiguity and contradictions this heroine deals with in judging and choosing the action she will take The necessity to organize the narrative patterns which indicated the tragic view in James' novel, led to a brief review of some ideas taken from semiotics, specifically those connected to the study of the polarity of signs in language. -

Graduate Program in Dance Studies The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Karen Eliot, Adviser Nena Couch Susan Petry Angelika Gerbes Copyright by Ligia Ravenna Pinheiro 2015 ABSTRACT The Real Theatro de São Carlos de Lisboa employed Italian choreographers from its inauguration in 1793 to the middle of the nineteenth century. Many libretti for the ballets produced for the S. Carlos Theater have survived and are now housed in the National Library of Portugal. This dissertation focuses on the narratives of the libretti in this collection, and their importance as documentation of ballets of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, from the inauguration of the S. Carlos Theater in 1793 to 1850. This period of dance history, which has not received much attention by dance scholars, links the earlier baroque dance era of the eighteenth century with the style of ballet of the 1830s to the 1850s. Portugal had been associated with Italian art and artists since the beginning of the eighteenth century. This artistic relationship continued through the final decades of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century. The majority of the choreographers working in Lisbon were Italian, and the works they created for the S. Carlos Theater followed the Italian style of ballet d’action. -

13.2 (2012): 419-437 UDC 811.131.1'282(450.361)=111 821.131.1-1:81=111 Original scientific paper Received on 30.03. 2012 Accepted for publication on 30.05. 2012 Vesna Deželjin University of Zagreb Reflexes of the Habsburg empire multilingualism in some Triestine literary texts In 1964 two contemporary Triestine writers, Lino Carpinteri and Mariano Fara- guna, published a book of poems entitled Serbidiòla. The poems, full of nostalgia, speak about the past when the Habsburg town of Trieste was the most important Adriatic harbour and a significant Central European centre. The book was an ab- solute success since it was one of the first that showed how profoundly one of the largest and most powerful states in Europe’s modern history had been, and still was, interwoven into collective memory, not only of Trieste’s citizens, but also that of many people living in the territories surrounding the town and even in re- gions further away from Trieste, such as Dalmatia. Apart from numerous scenes evoking places and events connected to the history of the town during the last three decades of the Habsburg Empire and, consequently, its government in Tri- este, another element worth mentioning is of linguistic nature. Poems written in the Triestine dialect attract the scholar’s attention because of the number of bor- rowings, either formally integrated or not, that penetrated into the Triestine dialect from languages used in the town and elsewhere in the Empire as well. An analysis of the texts shows that German, Croatian, Hungarian and other loanwords belong to different semantic fields and that they perform important textual functions. -

Introduction The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or con- tents. Transfer may be regarded as the most comprehensive concept, as it comprises all sorts and modes of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of trans- ferring literature (and other cultural goods) across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions such as critics, translators, publishers, book-dealers, libraries, etc. to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cul- tural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature and they are an important requirement for the admission to ‘world literature’. In former times the term ‘influence’ covered the whole field of relations be- tween authors and literatures; in the 1960s the positivist touch to the idea of influ- ence as an impetus in the mechanical imitation of prestigious works of genius be- came discredited and the concept was replaced by reception – cf. -

Il volume curato da Jacqueline Andall e Derek Duncan è il risultato di una conferenza londinese (2005) sul concetto di ibridismo (hybridity) nel contesto italiano coloniale e post-coloniale da un’ottica multidisciplinare, ed affianca altri lavori sul colonialismo italiano come quelli pubblicati da Andall e Duncan (Italian Colonialism: Legacy and Memory, 2005) e da Ruth Ben-Ghiat e Mia Fuller (Italian Colonialism, 2005). Analizzando aspetti culturali, il volume prende in considerazione lo spazio, la relazione tra spazio e corpo sociale, l’architettura, la storia e i suoi rituali, l’educazione, il cinema e la letteratura d’immigrazione. Molti degli interventi rimandano alle teorie elaborate da Homi K. Bhabha (The Location of Culture, 1994) e da Robert J. C. Young (Colonial Desire, 1995). Se le teorie sull’ibridismo di Young sono state spesso utilizzate per spiegare il caso italiano, il cui colonialismo non è stato tanto un’imposizione ideologica di pratiche coloniali su soggetti colonizzati quanto piuttosto il sovrapporsi d’interazioni culturali, sociali, economiche e politiche, quelle di Bhabha offrono spunti di riflessione sui concetti di mimicry e menace come rappresentazioni di culture ambivalenti. La prima parte (Colonialism in the Postcolonial) si apre con l’intervento di Alessandro Triulzi (Displacing the Colonial Event: Hybrid Memories of Postcolonial Italy) che, riconoscendo come il colonialismo italiano non sia stato più umano o tollerante degli altri colonialismi, analizza la riconfigurazione della memoria coloniale in Africa e la sua rinegoziazione in Italia attraverso una memoria condivisa che reitera l’ibridismo coloniale di marca italiana. -

Trieste, Crossroads of Cultures in Central Eastern Europe: Transformations, Contradictions and Continuities at the Italian Eastern Border Margherita Sulas, University of Cagliari, Italy The IAFOR International Conference on The City 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract This paper aims to highlight some peculiarities of this border region contested between Italy and Yugoslavia where the ethnic differences, cultural and the geographical characteristics blend together in an extraordinary example of European multiculturalism. Thanks to its location, on the eastern border, the city has always played an important strategic role and exchange with the world of the Slavic peoples and Austria. For this reason, Trieste was one of the most important Italian cities, in particular, at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century. His soul mixes Mediterranean and Central European characters and its harbor is the largest and most important of Italy, one of the most important maritime cluster in Europe. This has made and still makes Trieste a place of exchanges and meetings. But Trieste is also a city that has been a refuge, a second chance and, at times, even an exile for many people who have come to live. This quality has made this city very lively and original and is evident in its urban fabric and in its monuments. Trieste is also the mingling of Greek and Slovenes, Jews and Christians, of Austria and Italy, of invaders and fugitives, sea and Bora recounted in the books of Claudio Magris, Scipio Slapater and Laura Boschian. Trieste is a interlacement of art movements, literary, historical, social, geographical, natural and architectural, the paradigm of that which once was studied such as the famous "Mitteleuropa": and is now, of course, the complicated "plural society" in which we all live. -
