A differenza della Puglia, della Calabria e Lucania, rappresentati bene nell’antologia appena pubblicata di G. Spagnoletti e C. Vivaldi (Poesia dialettale dal Rinascimento a oggi, Garzanti 1991), il Molise è stato trascurato quasi completa- mente. Tale silenzio persistette ostinatamente, nonostante le scelte critiche proposte da Pasolini e Dell’Arco nella loro opera pionieristica dei primi anni Cinquanta. Persino tra le antologie dialettali dedicate a una sola regione o città ─ ne troviamo oltre una decina per il napoletano, il siciliano o il modenese ─ vi è per il Molise una sola raccolta, la Prima antologia dei poeti dialettali molisani, pubblicata nel 1967, a quattro anni dallo statuto del Molise come regione autonoma. Si tratta di un florilegio con oltre trenta poeti, benchè privo di un orientamento critico rigoroso. Il presente lavoro di Bonaffini, Faralli e Martelli riempirà ora questo vuoto, offrendo una scelta autorevole di nove poeti novecenteschi originari di questa regione montuosa mediana che si estende fino al mare Adriatico, circondata dalle regioni Lazio e Campania ad ovest, dall’Abruzzo a Nord e dalla Puglia al sud. Il lavoro è innovativo in quanto si tratta della prima antologia molisana trilingue ─ con traduzioni cioè in italiano e inglese ─ e in quanto propone un ricco campione di poesie scritte da poeti tra cui Eugenio Cirese, il solo molisano occasionalmente presente nelle antologie; Giuseppe Jovine e Giovanni Cerri; Nina Guerrizio, l’unica poetessa dell’antologia; Giuseppe Altobello, considerato da qualcuno il caposcuola della poesia dialettale molisana. E’ presente anche Giose Rimanelli, un poeta che scrive in lingua e in dialetto in America. Per ogni poeta troviamo un breve profilo critico compilato dai tre curatori, da poeti (come Luigi Fontanella e il molisano Sabino d’Acunto), nonchè da studiosi e traduttori di poesia dialettale operanti negli Stati Uniti. Il presente lavoro porta la poesia dialettale molisana fuori dal suo isolamento, ironicamente in un periodo storico quando i dialetti svaniscono lentamente dall’uso quotidiano, convergendo con la lingua nazionale, come testimonia qualche testo del volume. Tale isolamento fu causato da vari fattori, III Preface With the recent revival of the long-standing Aunofficial@ tradition of dialect poetry inside and outside Italy, many previously little known Southern Italian writers have come to a prominent surface. But unlike Apulia, Calabria, Lucania, which are well represented in the most recent anthology by G. Spagnoletti and C. Vivaldi (Po- esia dialettale dal Rinascimento a oggi, Garzanti 1991), Molise has been neglected almost entirely. This neglect has been persistent, despite Pasolini-Dell’Arco’s critical selections proposed in their pioneering work of the early fifties. Even among the many vernacular anthologies devoted to one region or town ─ we find more than ten such works for Neapolitan, Sicilian, Modenese, and close to that number for Abruzzese ─ Molise is represented by just one text, Emilio Ambrogio Paterno’s Prima antologia dei poeti dialettali molisani, published in 1967, four years after Molise was declared an autonomous Italian region. It is a florilegium of over thirty poets, albeit devoid of any serious critical perspective. The present work by Bonaffini, Faralli and Martelli now fills this gap with an authoritative selection of nine twentieth century poets from the mountainous South-central region that falls down to the Adriatic sea and is surrounded in the West by Latium and Campania, North by Abruzzo, and South by Apulia. It is innovative in being the first trilingual anthology of Molise ─ translations are both into Italian and English ─, and in presenting a rich sampling of poetry by such poets as Eugenio Cirese, the only poet occasionally included in anthologies; Giuseppe Jovine and Giovanni Cerri; Nina Guerrizio, the only woman poet; Giuseppe Altobello, by

Adriana Nelli ABSTRACT Triestine migration to Australia is the direct consequence of numerous disputations over the city's political boundaries in the immediate post- World War II period. As such the triestini themselves are not simply part of an overall migratory movement of Italians who took advantage of Australia's post-war immigration program, but their migration is also the reflection of an important period in the history of what today is known as the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.. 1954 marked the beginning of a brief but intense migratory flow from the city of Trieste towards Australia. Following a prolonged period of Anglo-American administration, the city had been returned to Italian jurisdiction once more; and with the dismantling of the Allied caretaker government and the subsequent economic integration of Trieste into the Italian State, a climate of uncertainty and precariousness had left the Triestines psychologically disenchanted and discouraged.

The poems, full of nostalgia, speak about the past when the Habsburg town of Trieste was the most important Adriatic harbour and a significant Central European centre. The book was an ab- solute success since it was one of the first that showed how profoundly one of the largest and most powerful states in Europe’s modern history had been, and still was, interwoven into collective memory, not only of Trieste’s citizens, but also that of many people living in the territories surrounding the town and even in re- gions further away from Trieste, such as Dalmatia. Apart from numerous scenes evoking places and events connected to the history of the town during the last three decades of the Habsburg Empire and, consequently, its government in Tri- este, another element worth mentioning is of linguistic nature. Poems written in the Triestine dialect attract the scholar’s attention because of the number of bor- rowings, either formally integrated or not, that penetrated into the Triestine dialect from languages used in the town and elsewhere in the Empire as well. An analysis of the texts shows that German, Croatian, Hungarian and other loanwords belong to different semantic fields and that they perform important textual functions.

    Introduction The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or con- tents. Transfer may be regarded as the most comprehensive concept, as it comprises all sorts and modes of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of trans- ferring literature (and other cultural goods) across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions such as critics, translators, publishers, book-dealers, libraries, etc. to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cul- tural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature and they are an important requirement for the admission to ‘world literature’. In former times the term ‘influence’ covered the whole field of relations be- tween authors and literatures; in the 1960s the positivist touch to the idea of influ- ence as an impetus in the mechanical imitation of prestigious works of genius be- came discredited and the concept was replaced by reception – cf.

    Trieste, Crossroads of Cultures in Central Eastern Europe: Transformations, Contradictions and Continuities at the Italian Eastern Border Margherita Sulas, University of Cagliari, Italy The IAFOR International Conference on The City 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract This paper aims to highlight some peculiarities of this border region contested between Italy and Yugoslavia where the ethnic differences, cultural and the geographical characteristics blend together in an extraordinary example of European multiculturalism. Thanks to its location, on the eastern border, the city has always played an important strategic role and exchange with the world of the Slavic peoples and Austria. For this reason, Trieste was one of the most important Italian cities, in particular, at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century. His soul mixes Mediterranean and Central European characters and its harbor is the largest and most important of Italy, one of the most important maritime cluster in Europe. This has made and still makes Trieste a place of exchanges and meetings. But Trieste is also a city that has been a refuge, a second chance and, at times, even an exile for many people who have come to live. This quality has made this city very lively and original and is evident in its urban fabric and in its monuments. Trieste is also the mingling of Greek and Slovenes, Jews and Christians, of Austria and Italy, of invaders and fugitives, sea and Bora recounted in the books of Claudio Magris, Scipio Slapater and Laura Boschian.
