(1990). Although this system was proposed as early as 1972 it has been applied irregularly in writings on the arts, but we have chosen to adhere to it so as to reflect a closer relationship to actual Balinese aksara ‘letters of the alphabet, language’. For instance, many words with prefixes frequently spelled pe or peng are spelled here with the prefixes pa and pang. 1 Introduction These historic recordings were made in 1928 as part of a collection of the first and only commercially–released recordings of music made in Bali prior to World War II. This diverse sampling of new and older Balinese styles appeared on 78 rpm discs in 1929 with subsequent releases for international distribution. The records were sold worldwide (or not sold, as it happened) and quickly went out of print. It was a crucial time in the island’s musical history as Bali was in the midst of an artistic revolution with kebyar as the new dominant style of music.

Music and media in the Dutch East Indies: Gramophone records and radio in the late colonial era, 1903-1942 Philip Bradford Yampolsky A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: Philip D. Schuyler, Chair Ter Ellingson Laurie J. Sears Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music © 2013 Philip Bradford Yampolsky University of Washington Abstract Music and media in the Dutch East Indies: Gramophone records and radio in the late colonial era, 1903-1942 Philip Bradford Yampolsky Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Emeritus Philip D. Schuyler Music This dissertation is intended as an ethnomusicological contribution to the history of music and media in Indonesia. It deals with topics and resources that have never been systematically examined for this region: gramophone records and radio broadcasting from the years before World War II, the last years of Dutch colonial control. The gramophone records are our only documentation of the sound of Indonesian music in the years before World War II. This dissertation tries to identify (and to some extent provide) the information one needs in order to understand the records and, by extension, stylistic trends during the pre-war period. Ultimately it is meant as an argument for the importance of making use of historical recordings and discography in ethnomusicology. The use of gramophone records from before World War II (“78s”) in musicology and ethnomusicology is growing. Robert

  • Conclusion: 'Placing Culture'
CONcLUSION: ‘PLAcING CULTURE’ This book has explored the way Indonesian films have engaged with issues of traditional cultures in diverse regions, the forms these regional societ- ies take, and particularly the cultural phenomena to which they give rise. It has also explored the issue of broad cultural dominants in Indonesian society, in particular group orientation and group body language, which are also addressed by Heider in his book Indonesian Cinema: National Culture on Screen, though in quite different ways. At the same time, this study has eschewed attempting to define a national culture or a national identity, on the ground that most of the cultural dominants with which it has engaged, and especially body language, are pre-national in origin, and not only pertain to local communities in which the individual is raised, but are part of the habitus of an individual. Nevertheless, the arguments and analyses presented in this book are grounds for thinking further about the differences between individualistic Western societies and group-oriented societies, certainly beyond bland and non-specific generalizations, because the phenomena explored are fundamental to the constitution and forms of interaction of an individual, ultimately producing a quite different kind of human experience. This is something demonstrated by the films them- selves. At the same time, in Chap. 7 I have provocatively raised questions about alternative positioning(s) of women in some Indonesian films. One of the examples investigated—the West Javanese legend of ‘incest avoided’ with the help of the mother, a story found also in various forms elsewhere in Indonesia, and retold in the popular filmSangkuriang —provides an alternative myth to the Oedipus story, used widely in the West as a singular © The Author(s) 2017 297 D.
