Martinus Dwi Marianto July 1995 ABSTRACT Surrealist painting flourished in Yogyakarta around the middle of the 1980s to early 1990s. It became popular amongst art students in Yogyakarta, and formed a significant style of painting which generally is characterised by the use of casual juxtapositions of disparate ideas and subjects resulting in absurd, startling, and sometimes disturbing images. In this thesis, Yogyakartan Surrealism is seen as the expression in painting of various social, cultural, and economic developments taking place rapidly and simultaneously in Yogyakarta's urban landscape. -

It is interesting even to participate. This study has two significances for readers and students of language and literature faculty. Theoretically, the result of the study will give description about the meaning of symbols used in Malang Mask dance and useful information about cultural understanding, especially in Javanese culture. According to Soekanto (1990:188), culture is complex which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society. This research is conducted in order to answer the following questions: What are the symbols of Malang Mask dance? What are meannings of those symbolism of Malang Mask dance? TAWARIKH: International Journal for Historical Studies, 2(2) 2011 Understanding the Nusantara Thought and Local Wisdom as an Aspect of the Indonesian Education Irmayanti Meliono ABSTRACT: This paper discusses of the Nusantara thought, local wisdom, and the Indonesian education. The complex, dynamic, and eclectic nature of the Indonesian cultures are based on the ethnics that have settled in Indonesia for some centuries and the foreign cultures of India, Arab, Dutch, China and others. The synthesis of these mixed cultures has caused the people of Nusantara then, now Indonesia, have a certain perception on a reality of life. It reϔlects the awareness of the people of Nusantara of their world-view and thoughts about values, symbols, and local wisdom. Therefore, the Nusantara thought, local wisdom, and multiculturalism are appropriate teaching material for the education of the Indonesian youth as they edify some values such as nationalism, harmony, and moral to build an identity. Finally, it is to institute an educational program in all levels such as teaching a cultural overview and a correct teaching method to present a teaching material using the Nusantara thought, local wisdom, and multiculturalism. This is a critical step to take as globalization has been fast in the ϔield of education, science, and technology. KEY WORDS: Culture of Indonesia, the Nusantara thought, local wisdom, multiculturalism, and education of the young generation. INTRODUCTION Education is one of the appropriate media that is accurate and effective to create a young generation who is able to generate an inquiring mind, wise, open-minded, and constructive attitude. The systemic education which contains the complimentary subsystems, distributed to the regions in the Indonesian archipelago, and to the different level of state and private educational institutions. -

Penelitian yang dilakukan merupakan kajian sejarah dengan mengambil peran sentral pada aktivitas Mpok Nori terhadap usahanya untuk mengembangkan kesenian Betawi yang dilakukannya melalui tari topeng Betawi, teater lenong, sanggar, layar kaca dan layar perak. Ia berhasil membawa kesenian Betawi bertahan di tengah modernisasi Jakarta yang berkembang cepat dengan seni budaya lain yang berasal dari berbagai daerah. Sanggar yang didirikannya telah menghasilkan anak didik yang berprestasi dalam mengembangkan kesenian Betawi. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa Mpok Nori berhasil membawa kesenian Betawi bertahan di tengah modernisasi Jakarta yang berkembang cepat. Kata kunci: Betawi, kesenian, Mpok Nori Abstract This thesis discusses about Mpok Nori’s role in developing Betawinese art in 1968—1995. The research done is a historical study which takes a central role on Mpok Nori’s activities in trying to develop Betawinese art through Betawi mask dance, lenong theater, atelier, television and cinema. She has succeeded in bringing Betawineses art to survive in the middle modernization which grows fast together with the other cultural arts from various districts in Indonesia. The atelier which was built has produced successful students in evolving Betawinese art. This research proved that Mpok Nori has succeeded to bring Betawinese art keep in the fast-developed Jakarta modernization. It is conducted as an effort to unravel the existence of woman as indung or mother that has been influencing many aspects of life of Sundanese society. All those three actors have very dominant role both in social and internal aspect. The figure purpose of the research is to identify the process of value change in a series of time, particularly the change in their function caused by the particular circumstances during the past colonial era. The research employs descriptive-analytical methodology with qualitative approach, and focuses its analysis on process, event and authenticity. The findings of the research suggests that either the of Sunan Ambu, Dewi Sri or Ronggeng, have a multi-dimensional character: namely (1) as a woman who is responsible for human kind‟s life sustainability, (2) as a mother or indung, (3) as a protector and life-giver, the character of which are deeply embedded in those three figures. -

PRESERVATION OF SUNDANESE TRADITIONAL DANCE IN MODERN DAY Santi Susanti, Kismiyati Elkarimah Fakultas Ilmu Komunikasi, Universitas Padjadjaran, Jl. Raya Bandung-Sumedang Km.21, Jatinangor, Indonesia [email protected] ABSTRACT It is not easy to maintain traditional dance art nowadays. Influences came easily by technology and contribute to driving the passion of younger generation from traditional art to contemporary art. However, modernity should not be avoided. Traditional art could make an adaptation of the present situation. Indrawati Lukman, a Sundanese classical dance maestro and founder of Studio Indra Dance (STI) adaptive to the situation. A number of innovations were developed in traditional Sundanese dance she learned from her teacher as well as the dance she created as a choreographer, to preserve the art in the midst of globalization. Phenomenology interpretive thinking used and in-depth interviews chosen as the main method of data collection. The results obtained that classical and modernity can be united without eliminating the inherent identity as a dance of Sundanese tradition. Changes in motion, music, costumes and duration of the dance performed to maintain the continuity of Sundanese classical dance. Good communication with internal and external circles helped strengthen the effort. A strong mentality is needed to deal with the worst possibility that will be faced with the continuity of traditional dance art preservation. As a middle-income country with the fourth largest higher-education system in the world in terms of the number of institutions and the sixth largest in terms of enrollment, Indonesia faces a distinctive set of challenges and opportunities not shared by smaller or wealthier systems. The huge size of the system allows for a rich level of diversity and necessitates atypical strategies and partnerships. It also makes governance, funding, and quality assurance difficult. 2. Characteristics of higher-education system. Indonesia’s higher-education system is characterized by diversification, scale, private provision, and an atypical governance system. Indonesia’s diversified higher-education system has five types of higher-education institutions; (HEIs) academies, polytechnics, Sekolah Tinggi (Schools of Higher Learning or colleges), institutes, and universities under a general and a religious stream. The general stream has an academic and a vocational sub-stream. The system offers 27,000 study programs at diploma or degree level. The Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education (MORTHE) oversees the general and the Ministry of Religious Affairs the religious stream. Private providers enroll 73% of HEI students (the average for Asia is 35%) and manage 90% of HEIs (average for Asia: 60%). (1990). Although this system was proposed as early as 1972 it has been applied irregularly in writings on the arts, but we have chosen to adhere to it so as to reflect a closer relationship to actual Balinese aksara ‘letters of the alphabet, language’. For instance, many words with prefixes frequently spelled pe or peng are spelled here with the prefixes pa and pang. 1 Introduction These historic recordings were made in 1928 as part of a collection of the first and only commercially–released recordings of music made in Bali prior to World War II. This diverse sampling of new and older Balinese styles appeared on 78 rpm discs in 1929 with subsequent releases for international distribution. The records were sold worldwide (or not sold, as it happened) and quickly went out of print. It was a crucial time in the island’s musical history as Bali was in the midst of an artistic revolution with kebyar as the new dominant style of music.
