August 1895 paa Rejse fra København til Ha- paranda, ført af Kapt. J. Christiansen, kolliderede Skib­ et i Østersøen med Skonnert "Joel" af Sølvesborg, I69 brutto 162 netto, tilhørende 0. Holm og ført af J. Andersson, forsikret for 5.000 Kr. i Fjerde Sø Forsikrings Selskab, København, paa Rejse fra Finland til Aarhus med Brædder. Lasten var forsikret for 7«ooo Kr. Ifølge "Pallas" Forklaring saas Kl. 11,3o Em. 1 a 2 Streger om Bagbord af "Pallas", som styrede 0S0. det rø­ de Sidelys fra en Sejler - "Joel" af Sølvesborg, og 1 a 2 Streger om Styrbord det grønne Lys fra en anden Sejler, Kapt. Christiansen, som havde Vagt, forlod Broen og op­ holdt sig i Bestiklukafet fra omtrent 5 Minutter forinden Kollisionen skete, da han ikke antog, at der var nogen Fare ved Situationen, hvorfor han ej heller mindskede Farten, der var lo Sømil, eller forandrede Kursen. Kl. 11,3o Em., da Sejleren om Styrbord var omtrent tværs for "Pallas", saas pludselig "Joels" grønne Sidelys. 2. Styr­ mand i "Pallas" lagde da Roret haardt Bagbord for at lø­ be foran om "Joel", men straks efter tørnede "Joel" mod "Pallas" midtskibs om Bagbord, der fremkom et stort Hul ca. 3 Fod over Vandlinien. "Joel", som ogsaa blev stærkt beskadiget, bugseredes flydende paa Lasten af "Pallas" til Københavns Yderred, efter at sidstnævnte Skib ved Lempning i Kulkasserne havde faaet Styrbords Slagside. Den 15/8 Kl. 1 Em. ankrede "Pallas" op paa Inderreden. Ifølge "Joels" Forklaring saas Kl. 11 Em. en Dam­ pers Toplys og røde Sidelys mindst 2 Streger om Styr­ bord. Da "Joel", der med Kurs V.£N. løb 4£ Knobs Fart kom nærmere, saas Damperens grønne Sidelys. Kapt. Ander­ son greb da Roret og lod falde 1-2 Streger af, men da Damperen viste sit røde Sidelys blev Kollisionen uund- gaaelig. Af Retten blev det foreholdt begge Skibes Befalings­ mænd under eet, at de givne Forklaringer, hvorefter "Pal­ las" Besætning vilde have set "Joels" røde Sidelanterner om Bagbord og "Joels" Besætning samtidig "Pallas" røde Sidelanterne om Styrbord, næppe lod sig bringe i Over­ ensstemmelse, men Befalingsmændene saa sig ikke 1 Stand til at meddele Oplysninger, hvorved denne Uoverensstem­ melse kunde fjernes. Retten fandt det ufornødent at komme nærmere ind paa hvorledes denne Uoverensstemmelse snarest maatte tænkes fjernet, og paa, om forskellige Enkeltheder i de to Besætningers Forklaringer maa antages at have været mere eller mindre paalidelige, og paa, om det ene eller det andet Skib kan antages at have giret noget. Det maa nemlig siges at have været i Strid med Søvejsreglernes § 22, hvorefter "Joel" skulde vedblive at holde sin Kurs, at Kaptajnen ved paa det af ham angivne Tidspunkt at gri­ be Roret, bevirkede, at "Joel" efter hans egen Angivelse faldt 1 a 2 Streger af. Denne Drejning fandtes dertil ikke tilstrækkelig begrundet ved Søvejsreglernes § 23, ligesom det ej heller var givet, at Sammenstødet ikke endnu kunde have været undgaaet, hvis Drejningen ikke var sket. Men - ganske bortset fråden Fejl, som "Pallas" Kaptajn begik ved uden nogen oplyst berettiget Anledning at gaa ind i Bestiklukafet paa det af ham omtalte Tids­ punkt - maa det siges at have været i endnu mere bestemt HANDELS- OG SØFARTSMUSEET PÅ KRONBORG ss Pallas ex Ascupart. Modstrid med Søvejsreglernes § 17, at "Pallas" ikke under foreliggende Omstændigheder i rette Tid søgte at gaa af Vejen for §Joel", eftersom der allerede nogen Tid forud var Grund til at befrygte Faren for Sammenstød, og end­ videre i Strid med § 18, at "Pallas" heller ikke i rette Tid enten mindskede Fart eller stoppede og bakkede. Og da "Pallas" nu derved maa erkendes nærmest at have frem­ kaldt Sammenstødet, findes dets Rederi i Henhold til Sø­ lovens § 22o, 2. S-^k., efter Omstændighederne under Exe- cutionstvang, at burde betale til "Joel" Halvdelen af det af "Joel" fordrede Beløb med Kr. 5.438,83 med Renter der­ af 5% aarlig fra lo/9 1895 foruden 3oo Kr. i Sagsomkost­ ninger, medens "Joels" Fører bør for Tiltale ifølge Kon­ trastævning fri at være. Søforhør i København 13/6 og 15/6 I896 Den 4. Juni I896 Kl. 6,3o Em. i Taage, da "Pallas", Kapt. J. Christiansen, paa R jse fra Rotterdam til Sun­ derland i Ballast, med moderat Fart og stadig afgivende Taagesignaler, var i Nordsøen, saas forude pludselig i kun 3o - 4o Fods Afstand en Sejler, som senere viste sig at være "Lord Landsdowne" af London. Maskinen stoppedes og kastedes fuld Kraft bak, en Fløjtetone afgaves og Ro­ ret lagdes haardt Bagbord, men straks efter kolliderede "Pallas", som da omtrent laa stille, forude om Bagbord med "Lord Landsdowne", hvis Taagehorn formentlig ikke var brugt og ialtfald ikke hørt i "Pallas". En Baad send­ tes fra "Pallas" til Skonnerten, hvis Skanseklædning var blevet beskadiget, men som forøvrigt Ingen Assistance ønskede, hvorefter "Pallas", som var ubeskadiget, fort­ satte Rejsen. Søforhør i København 1/6 Den 1. Maj I898 Kl. 5,15 Em. skulde "Pallas", Kapt. J. Degn, der laa fortøjet langs Kajen i Riga Havn, for­ hale til anden Plads, men da den udenfor liggende ss "Kotka" af Hull, Kapt. T. Campbell, var til Hinder her­ for, anmodedes denne om at slække Trosserne, hvilket han, skønt opfordret af "Pallas" Lods imidlertid nægtede at gøre paa tilstrækkelig Maade. Følgen heraf blev, at Skib­ ene kom i Kollision. For "Kotkas" Vedkommende blev Skaden anslaaet til 75 Pund Sterling, hvilket Beløb afkrævedes Kapt. Degn, der nægtede at betale. Den lo. Maj I898 Kl.2,15 Fm., da "Pallas" med Lods ombord var ankommen udfor Millwall Dock i London, saas den engelske Damper "Esses" af Hull i Færd med at gaa ind i denne Dok. "Pallas" lod sit Anker falde, men des­ uagtet kunde Kollision ikke undgaas, hvorved begge Skibe dog kun tog ringe Skade. Bolingbroke, Idea of a Patriot King (1749) The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) corvettes that supported the Allied landings in North Africa beginning in November 1942 achieved substantial success. This little-known story is important, for the Canadian warships gave outstanding service at a time when the fortunes of the main RCN escort forces in the north Atlantic had dropped to their nadir. Problems resulting from overexpansion and overcommitment had, as has been fully documented in recent literature, raised grave doubts about the efficiency of Canadian escorts.2 What has yet to be properly acknowledged was that the operations of RCN ships in the Mediterranean and adjacent eastern Atlantic areas during these same months of crisis demonstrated that given an opportunity Canadian escorts could match the best. On 25 July 1942, after months of high-level discussions concerning the strategic direction of the war, Allied leaders agreed to invade North Africa in a campaign named Operation Torch, rather than immediately opening a second front in Europe. On 27 August 1942 the First Sea Lord signalled Vice-Admiral P.W. Nelles, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), "that Admiral Cunningham's [Naval Commander Expeditionary Force] Chief of Staff, Commodore R.M. Dick, would be visiting him in Ottawa with some information."3 The material proved to be an outline of Operation Torch, along with a request that the RCN provide escorts for the operation.

The steam engine improvements brought forth by James Watt in the later half of the 18th century greatly improved steam engine efficiency and allowed more compact engine arrangements. Successful adaptation of the steam engine to marine applications in England would have to wait until almost a century later after Newcomen, when Scottish engineer William Symington built the world's "first practical steamboat", the Charlotte Dundas, in 1802.[1] In 1807, the American Robert Fulton built the world's first commercially successful steamboat, simply known as the North River Steamboat, and powered by a Watt engine.

  • Database of Ship Collisions with Icebergs
    DATABASE OF SHIP COLLISIONS WITH ICEBERGS Brian T. Hill This database concentrates on iceberg collisions in the North Atlantic off Newfoundland and Labrador but does include a few incidents further north, around Greenland, and also in the fiords of Alaska. The format of the database follows the same style as that which appeared in the 1973 International Ice Patrol Bulletin. Now approximating 500 incidents, the database is comprised of the original 60 mentioned in the Bulletin plus what was found while researching material for the “Historical Record of Sea Ice and Iceberg Distribution around Newfoundland and Labrador, 1810 – 1958”, report LM-1998-02. The scope of that report was mainly limited to the winter months January through April and provided a little over 200 incidents. The search now continues through the remainder of the calendar years using contemporary shipping journals and newspapers. Others have been found in a variety of databases, articles, and insurance records, the principal sources being acknowledged below. The database focuses on incidents of ships striking icebergs which being ice of glacial origin also includes the smaller categories of growlers and bergy bits. Definitions can be found in MANICE. Sometimes it is unclear whether a “piece of ice” is a small iceberg or ice floe. Best judgement was used in deciding which was more likely though in practical terms the difference is only one of terminology since damage still occurred. There are many grim tales of death, destruction and survival in the ice without the presence of icebergs. This database will continue to grow as more incidents are found.

Abstract: On Thursday, October 1, 2015, the SS El Faro, a 40-year-old cargo ship owned by TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico and operated by TOTE Services, Inc., was on a regular route from Jacksonville, Florida, to San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it foundered and sank in the Atlantic Ocean about 40 nautical miles northeast of Acklins and Crooked Island, Bahamas. The ship had sailed directly into the path of Hurricane Joaquin, carrying a crew of 33, including 5 Polish contract repair workers. All those aboard perished in the sinking. As part of its accident investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) led a joint effort with the US Navy, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the National Science Foundation to locate the ship’s wreckage and retrieve its voyage data recorder (VDR). The VDR was pulled from 15,250 feet below the ocean surface in August 2016 during the third undersea mission and yielded more than 26 hours of parametric data and audio files.
