Various 3 Additional cased photographs are acquired from time to time and will be added to this guide, which will be re-issued with periodic updates. The majority of additions will not have digitial images available. Arrangement The present finding aid is arranged primarily by provenance. Many cased photographs in Bancroft collections are part of larger collections of family photographs, often received with family papers. Others were gifts of collectors such as Zelda Mackay or Margaret Schlichtmann. Although the entire source collections are not described here, the images are presented within their provenance-based groupings as series within the finding aid. Series notes within the Container List, below, briefly describe the source collection and indicate related materials that the library may hold, such as additional family photographs or manuscripts. Items that were not part of a larger collection but were acquired as single items have been grouped together as a separate series. Items are presented with a full description and a linked thumbnail and medium-resolution image. Many of these items may have additional scanned images showing details of the object or features discovered when the object was taken apart for preservation. These related digital images, when present, are viewable along with the primary image when the "view online item" link is clicked. Processing Information Processed by The Bancroft Library staff. Scope and Content Format, rather than subject content or provenance, was the basic criterion for inclusion in the present finding aid. While the core formats are cased photographs of the 1840s, 1850s and 1860s, related materials were also included, as described below. Included: All cased photographs: daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes (ferrotypes). Daguerreotypes and ambrotypes in frames. Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes which were probably once in cases, but were found as bare plates. Photographs on milk glass (opalotypes), and collodion positives on fabric (pannotypes) or on leather. Painted miniatures: includes painted portraits in cases, lockets, and occasionally small frames. Selected salted paper photographic prints made in California prior to 1860. Excluded: Tintypes which were never intended to be cased. These generally date from a later period, often as late as 1900. Some are in paper mounts, others are just bare plates. As indicated in the list above, items from the Bancroft's collections described and presented in this finding aid are not strictly limited to daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes. Opalotypes (collodion or carbon transfer photographs on milk glass or porcelain) were popular in the 1860's and early 1870's, and were usually contained in miniature cases. Collodion positives on leather or blackened cloth are related to ambrotypes and have been included. Painted miniature portraits are often housed in small cases or in lockets, just as daguerreotypes

July 2011- Titanium-Jewlery.com, a premier online retailer of men’s jewelry, titanium rings, and wedding bands, is proud to offer a wide variety of men’s tungsten wedding bands, one of the hottest and most sought after options on the market. Whether you are looking for a simple solid tungsten ring, or a band that is mixed with other metals or adorned with diamonds and gems, Titanium- Jewelry.com has nearly 100 options available for your special day. “In the jewelry industry there is no bigger yearly gathering than the JCK Las Vegas convention,” says Ron Yates, founder of Titanium- Jewelry.com. “Just as the Consumer Electronics Show, which also takes place at the Las Vegas Convention Center, shows off what will be the ‘next big thing’ in electronics, the JCK shows what is hot in the jewelry world, and what you can expect the ‘next big thing’ to be both online and at the local jewelry shop. This year the big seller at the convention was mens wedding bands made from tungsten materials. In fact, according to Chad Anderson of Heavy Stone Rings, one of the few manufacturers of U.S. made tungsten rings, tungsten is by no means a ‘fringe’ metal anymore with almost all jewelry stores in the United States offering bands made from tungsten. At Titanium- Jewelry.com, we are not new to tungsten, as we have been offering both wedding and engagement bands featuring the precious metal for years.

  • The Royal Canadian Navy and Operation Torch, 1942-19431
"A USEFUL LOT, THESE CANADIAN SHIPS:" THE ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY AND OPERATION TORCH, 1942-19431 Shawn Cafferky Like other amphibious animals we must come occasionally on shore: but the water is more properly our element, and in it...as we find our greatest security, so exert our greatest force. Bolingbroke, Idea of a Patriot King (1749) The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) corvettes that supported the Allied landings in North Africa beginning in November 1942 achieved substantial success. This little-known story is important, for the Canadian warships gave outstanding service at a time when the fortunes of the main RCN escort forces in the north Atlantic had dropped to their nadir. Problems resulting from overexpansion and overcommitment had, as has been fully documented in recent literature, raised grave doubts about the efficiency of Canadian escorts.2 What has yet to be properly acknowledged was that the operations of RCN ships in the Mediterranean and adjacent eastern Atlantic areas during these same months of crisis demonstrated that given an opportunity Canadian escorts could match the best. On 25 July 1942, after months of high-level discussions concerning the strategic direction of the war, Allied leaders agreed to invade North Africa in a campaign named Operation Torch, rather than immediately opening a second front in Europe. On 27 August 1942 the First Sea Lord signalled Vice-Admiral P.W. Nelles, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), "that Admiral Cunningham's [Naval Commander Expeditionary Force] Chief of Staff, Commodore R.M. Dick, would be visiting him in Ottawa with some information."3 The material proved to be an outline of Operation Torch, along with a request that the RCN provide escorts for the operation.

  • Precious Metal Testing Set Aurotest - ATS 1000
Precious Metal Testing Set AuroTest - ATS 1000 The precious metals testing set - ATS 1000 is a non-destructive and user friendly authenticity analysis system for fine gold bars and gold coins of common sizes and weights from 5 g to 1000 g fineness. Even the analysis of bars and coins made of silver, platinum or palladium is possible with this innovative precious metals testing set. The ATS 1000 utilizes a combined measurement of density and ultrasound speed in metallic materials in order to evaluate the authenticity of fine gold bars and coins. Both methods are based on a thorough volume inspection of the tested precious metal objects and not only on the analysis of a thin surface layer. There is no need any more to send precious metals objects to any assayer or precious metals refiner for authenticity testing. With the testing set ATS 1000 you can check by yourself without any doubts the fineness and homogeneity of your precious metal objects within 5 minutes or Digital ultrasonic velocity gauge of the testing set ATS 1000 with sound probe; upper left corner: opened find out possible fakes. GLOSSARY OF PLATING TERMS Acid gold: A mildly acidic process that is used when plating from 7 to 200 mils of gold. The deposits are usually 23kt purity, and it is not usually used as the final finish. Antique: A process which involves the application of a dark top coating over bronze or silver. This coating, either plated or painted, is partially removed to expose some of the underlying metal. Anti-tarnish: A protective coating that provides minimal tarnish protection for a low cost. Barrel plating: A type of mass finishing that takes place in a barrel or tub. Barrel plating is usually requested for very small pieces where pricing must be kept low. Black nickel: A bright or matte, dark plating process that is used to highlight antique finishes. Or, when used as a final color it will range from dark grey to light black. A bright black nickel will yield the darkest color. Bright finish: A high luster, smooth finish. CASS testing: The Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray test is the same as the Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) test, except it is accelerated, with typical time cycles being 8 and 24 hours. Cold nickel: A non-brightened nickel bath which replicates the original finish, that is, bright areas remain bright and dull areas remain dull. Color: Describes the final top coating (flash) which could be white, silver, 14kt gold (Hamilton), 18kt gold, or 24kt gold (English gold). See "gold flash" and "cyanide gold." Copper: An excellent undercoat in the plating process. Copper provides good conductivity and forms an excellent protective barrier between the base metal and the plate.
