Robert Baker ABSTRACT Enlightenment philosophers had long feared the effects of crisscrossing boundaries, both real and imagined. Such fears were based on what they considered a brutal ocean space frequented by protean shape-shifters with a dogma of ruthless exploitation and profit. This intellectual study outlines the formation and fragmentation of a fluctuating worldview as experienced through the circum-Atlantic life and travels of merchant, slaveowner, and slave trader Zephaniah Kingsley during the Era of Revolution. It argues that the process began from experiencing the costs of loyalty to the idea of the British Crown and was tempered by the pervasiveness of violence, mobility, anxiety, and adaptation found in the booming Atlantic markets of the Caribbean during the Haitian Revolution. -

4 Nordhoff and Hall’s Mutiny on the Bounty: A Piece of Colonial Historical Fiction Sylvie Largeaud-Ortega University of French Polynesia Introduction Various Bounty narratives emerged as early as 1790. Today, prominent among them are one 20th-century novel and three Hollywood movies. The novel,Mutiny on the Bounty (1932), was written by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, two American writers who had ‘crossed the beach’1 and settled in Tahiti. Mutiny on the Bounty2 is the first volume of their Bounty Trilogy (1936) – which also includes Men against the Sea (1934), the narrative of Bligh’s open-boat voyage, and Pitcairn’s Island (1934), the tale of the mutineers’ final Pacific settlement. The novel was first serialised in the Saturday Evening Post before going on to sell 25 million copies3 and being translated into 35 languages. Performance Evaluation of the 19th Century Clipper Ship Cutty Sark: A Comparative Study C. Tonry1, M. Patel1, C. Bailey1, W. Davies2, J. Harrap2, E. Kentley2, P. Mason2 1University of Greenwich, London, UK 2 Abstract The Cutty Sark, built in 1869 in Dumbarton, is the last intact composite tea clipper ship [1]. One of the last tea clippers built she took part in the tea races back from China. These races caught the public imagination of the day and were widely reported in newspapers [2]. They developed from a desire for 'fresh' tea and the first ship to return with the new season's tea could charge a higher price for the cargo. Clipper ships were built for speed rather than carrying capacity. The hull efficiency of the Cutty Sark and her contemporaries is currently unknown. However, with modern CFD techniques, virtual experiments can be performed to model the fluid flow past the hull and so based on the shear stress and the pressure over the surface of the hull to calculate the resistance. In order to compare the hull against other ships three other ships were selected. The Farquharson, an East Indiaman built in 1820 [3]; the Thermopylae, another composite clipper built in 1868 which famously raced the Cutty Sark in 1872 [1]; and finally the Erasmo a later Italian all-steel construction 4-masted barque built in 1903[4]. Fig. 1 shows images of these ships. As only one of these ships exists today, and she no longer sails, 3D geometries were constructed fromlines plans of the ships hulls. -

ABSTRACT The long and lucrative history of smuggling in the early modern period receives the attention of colonial scholars only as it relates to their isolated geographic field of study, ignoring the broader history that linked imperial economies in a mercantilist age. This thesis addresses the history of eighteenth-century smuggling in the Caribbean by examining both British and Spanish sources in order to shift the angle of focus away from imperial metanarratives and towards an understanding of the commercial networks forged between Spanish and British colonists on the periphery of empire. By examining the contraband trade between Jamaican merchants and residents of Cartagena, this work explores the blurred lines of colonial jurisprudence as well as the commercial networks necessary to the survival of those colonial spheres. -
Hornblower's Ships
Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. He first flew his own flag on the Nonsuch and sailed to the Baltic on her. In later years his ships were smaller as befitted the nature of the tasks that fell to him. -

Bolingbroke, Idea of a Patriot King (1749) The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) corvettes that supported the Allied landings in North Africa beginning in November 1942 achieved substantial success. This little-known story is important, for the Canadian warships gave outstanding service at a time when the fortunes of the main RCN escort forces in the north Atlantic had dropped to their nadir. Problems resulting from overexpansion and overcommitment had, as has been fully documented in recent literature, raised grave doubts about the efficiency of Canadian escorts.2 What has yet to be properly acknowledged was that the operations of RCN ships in the Mediterranean and adjacent eastern Atlantic areas during these same months of crisis demonstrated that given an opportunity Canadian escorts could match the best. On 25 July 1942, after months of high-level discussions concerning the strategic direction of the war, Allied leaders agreed to invade North Africa in a campaign named Operation Torch, rather than immediately opening a second front in Europe. On 27 August 1942 the First Sea Lord signalled Vice-Admiral P.W. Nelles, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), "that Admiral Cunningham's [Naval Commander Expeditionary Force] Chief of Staff, Commodore R.M. Dick, would be visiting him in Ottawa with some information."3 The material proved to be an outline of Operation Torch, along with a request that the RCN provide escorts for the operation. -
