Early Theatre 9.2 Joanne Findon Napping in the Arbour in the Digby Mary Magdalene Play The turning point in the late medieval Digby Mary Magdalene play occurs when Mary Magdalene falls asleep in an arbour. This scene immediately follows her seduction in a tavern, and her words here indicate that she has given herself over to a life of sensuality. She has come to this arbour – a liminal space that partakes of both Nature and Culture – to await the arrival of one or more lovers. MARI: A, God be wyth my valentynys, My byrd swetyng, my lovys so dere! For þey be bote for a blossum of blysse! Me mervellyt sore þey be nat here, But I woll restyn in þis erbyre, Amons thes bamys precyus of prysse, Tyll som lovyr wol apere That me is wont to halse and kysse. [Her xal Mary lye doun and slepe in þe erbyre] (ll. 564-72)1 In her sleep, she hears the voice of an angel who repeats and recrafts her words, warning her “Ful bytterly thys blysse it wol be bowth!” (l. 589) and insisting that “Salue for þi sowle must be sowth” (l. 594) if she wishes to avoid eternal punishment. In repeating Mary’s word ‘blysse’, (l. 589) the angel highlights the price of unbridled sensual pleasure; his use of ‘bowth’ to echo Mary’s word ‘bote’ (l. 566) has a similar function. The angel’s ‘salue’ (l. 594) recalls the ‘bamys’ (l. 569) of the arbour which Mary sees as an appropriate setting for her encounter with her ‘valentynys’; yet of course these ‘bamys’ are intended for erotic attraction, while the ‘salue’ is for healing her soul of lust and pride. -

Ritgerð til M.A.-prófs Harry Williams Kt.: 151183-4419 Leiðbeinandi: Svanhildur Óskarsdóttir September 2017 Abstract This thesis is an examination of the fifteenth century manuscript AM 180a-b fol.; made up of a copy of the A version of Karlamagnús saga (180a) and seven further sagas - Konráðs saga keisarasonar, Dunstanus saga, Katrínar saga, Bærings saga, Knýtlinga saga, Vitus saga and Laurentius saga (180b), it originally formed one codex. The thesis has two main aims: to consider the generic position of Karlamagnús saga as it existed for the compilers of the manuscript and to speculate on the producers, purpose and use of the manuscript by means of a holistic consideration of its parts. The first aim is prompted by viewing the sagas of 180b as a reflection of the generic ambiguity of Karlamagnús saga. While patently belonging to the riddarasögur, Karlamagnús saga has affinities with hagiography and the konungasögur; representatives of these three generic classes are to be found in 180b. Structured by the theme of saintliness, in which a chronological line of saintly figures is presented, as well as shared geographical referents, the codex is marked by a wide-ranging intellectual curiosity. THE MIDDLE AGES 1 1 The Middle Ages Introduction The Middle Ages lasted a thousand years, from the break-up of the Roman Empire in the fifth century to the end of the fifteenth, when there was an awareness that a ‘dark time’ (Rabelais dismissively called it ‘gothic’) separated the present from the classical world. During this medium aevum or ‘Middle Age’, situated between classical antiquity and modern times, the centre of the world moved north as the civil- ization of the Mediterranean joined forces with the vigorous culture of temperate Europe. Rather than an Age, however, it is more appropriate to speak of Ages, for surges of decay and renewal over ten centuries redrew the political, social and cultural map of Europe, by war, marriage and treaty. By the sixth century, Christianity was replacing older gods and the organized fabric of the Roman Empire had been eroded and trading patterns disrupted. Although the Church kept administrative structures and learning alive, barbarian encroachments from the north and Saracen invasions from the south posed a continuing threat. The work of undoing the fragmentation of Rome’s imperial domain was undertaken by Charlemagne (742–814), who created a Holy Roman Empire, and subsequently by his successors over many centuries who, in bursts of military and administrative activity, bought, earned or coerced the loyalty of the rulers of the many duchies and comtés which formed the patchwork of feudal territories that was France. This process of centralization proceeded at variable speeds. After the break-up of Charlemagne’s empire at the end of the tenth century, ‘France’ was a kingdom which occupied the region now known as 2 THE MIDDLE AGES the Île de France. -

I contend that in both texts, fairies become intimately associated with conceptions of the ancient British past, and, more narrowly, with the idea of a specifically insular kingship that seeks its legitimization within that past. In Chapter One, I argue that Map’s longer version of the Herla narrative is his own synthesis of traditional materials, intended to highlight the continuity of a notion of British kingship that includes the pygmy king, Herla and Henry II. -

Duggan The Milman Parry Lectures on Oral Tradition for 1985 I Studies on the medieval epic in France and Spain have in recent years been devoted largely to individual works or to internal aspects of the texts, rather than to the ways in which contemporaries perceived and used it. This is, I think, partially because the study of medieval literature is largely carried out in the academy, and is thus correlated with teaching: as a result one tends to encounter again and again a handful of texts that are frequently assigned for classroom treatment, and to read even those few through a microscopic lens rather than in a broader context. Treatments taking in the medieval epic in the Romance languages as a whole are rare and outdated; thus it is that, in this fi eld, interest in the social function of epic, such as might have been aroused by synthetic works informed by reader-oriented literary theory—perhaps one should modify that to “listener-oriented” for our purposes—or by the sociology of literature, has not really developed. I will attempt to delineate in these lectures the functions of the medieval epic composed in French, Provençal, and Spanish from the point of view of the philologist, that is to say of one who is interested in texts and everything that might illuminate them. This includes, among other specialized pursuits, literary theory, textual criticism, evaluative criticism, and sociological criticism. What good does it do -

Available at: https://opencommons.uconn.edu/tqc/vol1/iss1/5 95 Crossing Cultures: The Old Norse Adaptations of Marie de France’s Lais Hákon Hákonarson (Hákon IV), King of Norway from 1217-1263, is often remembered as the ruler who brought an end to the approximate 110 years of civil war devastating his land, during which conflicts surrounding unclear succession laws and the influence of the Church over the King led to a divided country. His influence did not end with the establishment of peace in 1240, however; in fact, once Hákon was recognized as the undisputed king, he continued on to create what is commonly acknowledged as the great age (“storhetstid”) of Norwegian history, remarkable for its legal reforms, foreign policy, and a developing cultural life. Intent on demonstrating his excellence in kingship, Hákon made it his goal to emulate – and even surpass – the culture of more advanced European societies. This included the construction of royal buildings and churches, fostering relationships with other rulers, and (most pertinent for our purposes here) the procuring of Old Norse translations of popular French texts of the time.
