They wrote in two different languages. One language is called Hebrew. This was the language of the Israelites. God spoke to them in their own language, and they wrote down what He said in their own language. The books they wrote were put together and called the Old Testament. Here is Genesis 11:1-9 in Hebrew: Later on many of the Israelites forgot their language. Once men from the place called Babylon came and fought the Israelites. They beat the Israelites and took them back to their country to work for them. At another time men from Assyria did this same thing to the Israelites again. Both times the Israelites lost their land and they had to learn the languages of the people who lived in Assyria and Babylon. Many many years later, one of the Kings named Cyrus let the Israelites go back to their land. We read about this in the book Ezra in the Bible. Most of the people did not speak Hebrew anymore, they spoke a language called Aramaic. Then later on the King of Greece, Alexander the Great, sent his armies to many countries. They came to Israel and conquered the Israelites and became rulers over them. Most of the Israelites had to learn the Greek language. Greek was a very important language at that time and many people in lots of different countries could speak Greek. By the time Jesus came to earth, the Romans were the rulers in Israel, but Greek was still the international language, like English is today. So when men wrote the New Testament, they wrote it in the Greek language. Look at how Greek is written below. This is Mark 4:37-39 in Greek. 2 WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO TRANSLATE THE BIBLE? In the Bible we read that God's word is very important. In Psalm 119, verse 105, we read that it is like a lamp to guide us, and a light for our path. If we walk around without a lamp when it is really dark, we might lose our way or stumble or fall down. It is the same with our lives. But God's word is like a very bright light. It shows us what God is like and how we should live. Also, in 1 Peter 1:24-25a, we read: All people are like the grass. And all their strength is like the flowers of the field. The grass dies and the flowers fall. But the word of the Lord will live forever. Also in 2 Timothy 3:15-17, we read: The Scriptures are able to make you wise. And that wisdom leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by God and is useful for teaching and for showing people what is wrong in their lives. It is useful for correcting faults and teaching how to live right. Using the Scriptures, the person who serves God will be ready and will have everything he needs to do every good work. The Israelite people and the people who lived after Jesus came heard God's word in their own languages. We must translate the Bible so that people today can hear God speaking to them in their own language. Then they will have the opportunity to really understand God's word and think about it for themselves. They will know what God says about being in His family. In Revelation 7:9-10 it says that in heaven we will hear people praising God in every language: Then I looked, and there was a great number of people.

    Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands First compiled by Nancy Sack and Gwen Sinclair Updated by Nancy Sack Current to January 2020 Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands Background An inquiry from a librarian in Micronesia about how to identify subject headings for the Pacific islands highlighted the need for a list of authorized Library of Congress subject headings that are uniquely relevant to the Pacific islands or that are important to the social, economic, or cultural life of the islands. We reasoned that compiling all of the existing subject headings would reveal the extent to which additional subjects may need to be established or updated and we wish to encourage librarians in the Pacific area to contribute new and changed subject headings through the Hawai‘i/Pacific subject headings funnel, coordinated at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.. We captured headings developed for the Pacific, including those for ethnic groups, World War II battles, languages, literatures, place names, traditional religions, etc. Headings for subjects important to the politics, economy, social life, and culture of the Pacific region, such as agricultural products and cultural sites, were also included. Scope Topics related to Australia, New Zealand, and Hawai‘i would predominate in our compilation had they been included. Accordingly, we focused on the Pacific islands in Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia (excluding Hawai‘i and New Zealand). Island groups in other parts of the Pacific were also excluded. References to broader or related terms having no connection with the Pacific were not included. Overview This compilation is modeled on similar publications such as Music Subject Headings: Compiled from Library of Congress Subject Headings and Library of Congress Subject Headings in Jewish Studies.

INTRODUCTION Originally the present paper was devoted to the comparison of the NASCA (Nostratic, Semito-Hamitic, Sino-Caucasian), Bushmen (Khoisan) and South Bahnaric (belongs to Austroasiatic philae) proto- languages. Then the additional material was added from some other language families with the aim of tentative reconstruction of the Proto- World language’ s basic word list. In this paper Proto-World language will be called Ur Lasnguage (UL). It existed around 45-40 thousand years ago. All known human languages (or language families) ultimately stem from this original language. NASCA is an abbreviation [suggested by A.V. Korotayev (Kazankov, Korotayev, 2000)] for the unit of Nostratic, Afrasian, and Sino-CA ucasian. Alternative names are Eurasian ( Starostin 1989) and Paleolithic (Orel 1995a). Evidence for the genetic relatedness of the SH, Nostr., and SC was presented by S.A.Starostin (Starostin 1989), V.Orel Orel, 1995a), and A. Kazankov (Kazankov, Korotayev, 2000). South Bahnaric is a branch of Austroasiatic and belongs, more specifically, to the Mon-Khmer linguistic family. I am continuing to work on this dictionary, and anticipate making updated versions available from time to time. Bruce Hooley, April 27, 2006. INTRODUCTION Bruce A. Hooley Central Buang is an Austronesian language spoken in the central part of the Snake River Valley in the Mumeng sub-Province, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. The term Buang is not a local one, although it is generally accepted by them. Bu is the Busama word for water or river, and the Ang is a stream which flows into the ocean on the coastal side of the range. It was along this stream that the Buangs used to travel to reach the coast if they ventured that far afield in pre-contact days. The other term used by coastal people for the Buangs was Kaidemoe, which sometimes appears in the literature as Gaidemoe. This was a somewhat derogatory term akin to 'bush kanaka'. The Buang language family is a close-knit group of four major and two minor languages ranging from Buasi on the coast to Piu in the middle Watut. There are three major groups in the Snake River valley, the headwaters, the central villages, and the Mangga Buang. These three parts correspond to linguistic divisions also—the first two being considered dialects, and the third a distinct language. For further details of the linguistic situation in the area see Hooley (1970). The data recorded in this dictionary is based principally on the speech of Mapos I and the nearby villages.

Lists of general-purpose, largely independent ‘macro-areas’ (typically continent size) have been proposed as a step to rule out contact as an explanation for various large-scale linguistic phenomena. This squib points out some problems in some of the currently widely-used predetermined areas, those found in the World Atlas of Language Struc- tures (Haspelmath et al., 2005). Instead, we propose a principled division of the world’s landmasses into six macro-areas that arguably have better geographical independence properties.
