Introduction: Principals and Entrepreneurs – A Male Domain? Despite some first studies on female entrepreneurs, the history of business women in Germany still has not been written. Not only is this true for the important role of female entrepreneurs in the industrialisation, but also for business women in the aftermath of World War II. What are the reasons for the fact that this part of history is still untold? Is business and the establishment of enterprises a male domain or are there other causes for this lack of research? Hence, this paper is interested in analysing the insufficient representation of female entrepreneurs in German economic history – and theory. Economists and economic historians in Germany still focus on the male entrepreneurs and exclude the female ones even by linguistic means (or subsume the female entrepreneurs under the male term). At the beginning of the 1960s Fritz Redlich published his influential theoretical study on the ‘Unternehmer’.1 He referred to the older fundamental entrepreneurial theories of the German and Austrian Historical School of Economics, especially to Max Weber and Joseph A. Schumpeter (1883-1950) in distinguishing several types of entrepreneurs: creative destructors, inventors, innovators, pioneers, first movers, managers, and followers.2 What economists (and economic historians neither) have never doubted was that he attributed entrepreneurial competence and knowledge only to business men. He proudly announced to Wilhelm I, the new emperor, that they were now living in the “steel age.” Kaiser Wilhelm I and Bismarck were both quick to see and confirm the parallels between the new politics and the new business. But the identification between the house of Krupp and the German political order did not stop with the death of Krupp in 1887 or of Wilhelm I in 1888. Krupp’s son, Friedrich Alfred, cultivated an even closer relationship with Wilhelm I’s grandson, Kaiser Wil­ helm II. The new business culture reflected the kaiser’s own search for modernity and greatness. For Adolf Hitler, Krupp was also an icon. In Mein Kampf and again in 1935 at the Nuremberg party rally, Hitler exhorted German youth to be as “quick as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp steel.”1 Some people quibbled that Krupp steel was notably resilient (because slightly mal­ leable) rather than hard, but the company liked the anal­ ogy at the time. Er war der alleinige Inhaber der Gußstahlfabrik Fried. Krupp, die einer der weltweit führenden Hersteller von Stahl und Stahlprodukten mit fast 12000 Beschäftigten war. Aus dem Stahl wurden neben Präzisions- walzen eine Vielzahl von Produkten für die Eisenbahn hergestellt, für den Schiffsbau und natürlich die berühmten Kanonen. Mit die- sen Kanonen hatte Krupp teilgehabt an den militärischen Erfolgen Preußens, 1866 in Königgrätz und dann vor allem 1870 im deutsch- französischen Krieg. Sein Name war verbunden mit dem wirtschaft- lichen, politischen und militärischen Aufstieg Deutschlands, und mancher sah in ihm neben Bismarck und Moltke den dritten Reichs- gründer. Im Februar 1873, zum 25. Jahrestag der Übernahme der Gußstahl- fabrik als Alleininhaber, ließ Alfred Krupp ein Gedenkblatt anfer- tigen mit dem Foto eines kleinen, bescheidenen Häuschens. «Vor fünfzig Jahren», stand darunter in seiner faksimilierten Handschrift, «war diese ursprüngliche Arbeiterwohnung die Zuflucht meiner El- tern. Möchte jedem unserer Arbeiter der Kummer fern bleiben, den die Gründung der Fabrik über uns verhängte. 25 Jahre lang blieb der Erfolg zweifelhaft, der seitdem allmälig die Entbehrungen, Anstren- gungen, Zuversicht und Beharrlichkeit der Vergangenheit – endlich so wunderbar – belohnt hat».1 Das «Stammhaus», wie es seitdem genannt wird, hatte Krupp erst kurz zuvor wieder herrichten lassen, nachdem es lange Zeit fast in Vergessenheit geraten war.
