The presentaion of this paper will be illustrated. Business historians and economists have shown in recent publications that the creation of a corporate image has become ever more important for firms in the course of the 19th and 20th century.1 What does this mean for weapon and arms producing enterprises, which are highly bound to a specific market structure? In examining this question, I shall first look at the general structure of the different markets for weapons and military goods. In which way does the structure of the national and latter international arms trade influence the distribution and marketing strategies of European weapon producers like Krupp, Rheinmetall or others? This chapter (pp. 1-6) serve as a general introduction in the field of arms markets. The more specific questions of my EBHA-paper are presented in the following chapters. In the second part of my paper,I shall look at the different marketing strategies of these firms, which use national fairs and international expositions as well as special forms of event marketing. These special case studies in the field of marketing lead me to the creation of national, transnational or global images of the corporations. I shall look at the brands and logos which are designed and used in specific manners and which are transformed into symbols with national or international character. -

November 2011 in Essen An diesem besonderen Tag bei Ihnen hier in der Villa Hügel zu sein, ist eine große Freude. Vor exakt 50 Jahren, am 20. November 1961, hatte Bundespräsident Theodor Heuss an dieser Stelle die Freundlichkeit, dem Festredner der heutigen 200-Jahr-Feier aufzutragen, von den Erfolgen Berthold Beitz’ zu sprechen - er wolle das nicht tun, denn es wäre dem Anwesenden wohl peinlich. Sie, lieber Herr Beitz, haben unendlich viel nicht nur für den geschäftlichen Erfolg, sondern gerade auch für die Erinnerung an Krupp getan. Eine Eloge auf Sie wäre ein Leichtes und würde uns allen Freude bereiten. Sie aber haben nicht nur den ersten, sondern auch den zehnten Bundespräsidenten überzeugt, immer noch zu bescheiden zu sein, um das zu goutieren. Deshalb habe ich mich faszinieren lassen auch von den knapp eineinhalb Jahrhunderten der Firma vor Ihrer Berufung zum Generalbevollmächtigten und Ihrer außergewöhnlichen Leistung seither. Ich reiche den Auftrag von Heuss erst einmal an die Festrednerin oder den Festredner der 250-Jahr-Feier weiter. 200 Jahre Krupp – die Beschäftigung mit diesen zwei Jahrhunderten Unternehmensgeschichte führt uns Vieles vor Augen, das zum Besten der Deutschen und der deutschen Wirtschaftskultur gehört: Innovationskraft und Ingenieursleistungen, Erfinder- und Unternehmergeist, beeindruckende soziale Verantwortung. Auch mich fasziniert der Mythos Krupp: Immer war man beseelt und besessen davon, Neues zu kreieren und Lösungen für Probleme und Herausforderungen zu präsentieren. Introduction: Principals and Entrepreneurs – A Male Domain? Despite some first studies on female entrepreneurs, the history of business women in Germany still has not been written. Not only is this true for the important role of female entrepreneurs in the industrialisation, but also for business women in the aftermath of World War II. What are the reasons for the fact that this part of history is still untold? Is business and the establishment of enterprises a male domain or are there other causes for this lack of research? Hence, this paper is interested in analysing the insufficient representation of female entrepreneurs in German economic history – and theory. Economists and economic historians in Germany still focus on the male entrepreneurs and exclude the female ones even by linguistic means (or subsume the female entrepreneurs under the male term). At the beginning of the 1960s Fritz Redlich published his influential theoretical study on the ‘Unternehmer’.1 He referred to the older fundamental entrepreneurial theories of the German and Austrian Historical School of Economics, especially to Max Weber and Joseph A. Schumpeter (1883-1950) in distinguishing several types of entrepreneurs: creative destructors, inventors, innovators, pioneers, first movers, managers, and followers.2 What economists (and economic historians neither) have never doubted was that he attributed entrepreneurial competence and knowledge only to business men. Wood was giving way to iron for shipbuilding and armor protection. Smooth bore guns were giving way to rifles, both muzzle- and breech-loading. And the leading gun makers were graduating from cast iron to steel barrels. And the firm of W.G. Armstrong in Britain was rapidly rising to prominence in the field.
