It is used to make neoprene rubber, plastics, and resins. The oxyacetylene torch mixes and burns oxygen and acetylene to produce a very hot flame-as high as 3480ÝC (6300ÝF)-that can cut steel and weld iron and other metals. Produced by the action of wateron calcium carbide and catalytically from naphtha. Acetylide A carbide formed by bubbling acetylene through a metallic salt solution, eg cuprous acetylide, Cu2C2. These are violently explosive compounds. Acid Any substance capable of giving up a proton; a substance that ionizes in solution to give the positive ion of the solvent; a solution with a pH measurement less than 7. -

Season 6, Episode 9: Shipwreck Cannons Gwen Wright: Our first story investigates a maritime mystery washed up on an Oregon beach. 1846: tensions between the U.S. and Britain are approaching a boiling point. All eyes are focused on the disputed border between the U.S. and the British colonial territory of Canada. At stake is ownership of the enormous riches of some 300,000 square miles of the Pacific Northwest. The U.S. needs reconnaissance, and dispatches an armed naval vessel – the USS Shark . But that September disaster strikes; the Shark wrecks and sinks at the treacherous mouth of the Columbia River. More than a century and a half later, fourteen-year-old Miranda Petrone, from Tualatin, Oregon, thinks she may have found a piece of this historic ship. Miranda: Me and my dad were walking along the beach. And I saw this big thing with rust. And I’m like, hey dad, come here. Gwen: I’m Gwen Wright, nice to meet you. So I heard you found something pretty interesting around here. Miranda: Yeah. Gwen: What was it? Miranda: We found a cannon. Gwen: Now, are you sure it was a cannon? Miranda: Well, not at first. Me and my dad were walking along the beach. Then there was this big black rocky thing so I went up a little closer and eventually saw rust. I thought, rocks aren't supposed to have rust. And so, I called my dad over. He came and checked it out. He's like, huh, maybe it's a cannon. He was just joking though. -

Maritime Power and Struggle For Freedom: Naval Campaigns that Shaped the Modern World 1788-1851 Purpose of this Course: The open oceans of this planet were the great common areas around which Europeans and their social/cultural progeny created what they proclaimed to be the “modern world.” At the heart of this creation lay the European- dominated economic system that depended upon access to and reasonably unfettered use of the sea. This course looks at the development of that system during the period known as the “Age of Sail.” Course topics include the maritime aspects of European exploration of the world, the development of ships and navigational technology, naval developments, general maritime economic theory, and maritime cultural history. Course Requirements and Grading Policies: Students will take three (3) major exams. In addition, they will write two (2) book reviews. All will be graded on a strict 100-point scale. The final will NOT be comprehensive. Graduate Students: Graduate students taking this class will write a 20-page historiographical paper in lieu of the two undergraduate book reviews. Age of Sail Overnight Program Teacher’s Manual “Bringing Maritime History to Life” Copyright 2010 Age of Sail Program San Francisco Maritime National Park Association All Rights Reserved Dear Teachers, Welcome to Age of Sail and thank you so much for choosing to attend our amazing program! This manual contains everything you will need to prepare your class for the Age of Sail overnight program as well as some supplemental in- formation, should you elect to use it. I have updated and streamlined the manual this year and I hope that it is more intuitive and accessible than ever before. We have found that the most successful outcomes occur when teachers connect their fieldtrip to the State Content Standards and Frameworks. Math, Science, Mu- sic, Literature, Language, Theatre, Visual Arts as well as History and Social Sci- ence are all important themes in the Age of Sail program and the manual contains a number of optional activities and projects within these disciplines, should you elect to use them. There are also excellent teacher resources online at www.nps.gov/safr If you or any of the parents are interested in more training we offer one day Par- ent/Teacher Workshops on the first Saturday of every month, from September to May. These provide an excellent opportunity to visit our site, meet some of the staff and actually participate in program tasks usually reserved for the lads. ASTRA MILITARUM SOLDIERS OF THE IMPERIUM These datasheets allow you to fight Apocalypse battles with your Astra Militarum miniatures. Each datasheet includes the characteristics profiles of the unit it describes, as well as any wargear and special abilities it may have. KEYWORDS Throughout these datasheets you will come across the <Regiment> keyword. This is shorthand for a keyword of your choosing, as described below. <REGIMENT> Most Astra Militarum units are drawn from a regiment. Some datasheets specify which regiment the unit is drawn from (e.g. Mukaali Riders have the Tallarn keyword, so are drawn from the Tallarn Regiment), but where a datasheet does not, it will have the <Regiment> keyword. When you include such a unit in your army, you must nominate which regiment that unit is from. You then simply replace the <Regiment> keyword in every instance on that unit’s datasheet with the name of your chosen regiment. For example, if you were to include an Atlas Recovery Tank in your army, and you decided it was from Vostroya, its <Regiment> Faction keyword is changed to Vostroyan and its Recovery Vehicle ability would then read: ‘At the end of the Action phase, this unit can to repair one friendly Vostroyan Vehicle unit in base contact with it.
