PIONEERING NORTH SEA INTRODUCING AREG • Created in 2004 • To help transfer oil and gas expertise into renewables agenda • To mutual benefit • Image and awareness of Aberdeen • “Make Aberdeen as famous for renewables as it is for oil and gas” INTRODUCING AREG • Public-private - board of directors • 160 members – public sector, research and development, education, oil and gas operators, engineers, consultants • All Energy conference – 10 years • Active in all renewable sectors ABERDEEN OFFSHORE WIND FARM WIND FARM ISSUES • Shipping safety • Environment – birds mammals, sea-bed • Civil aviation • Defence considerations • Fishing • Tourism and leisure CONSTRAINTS EOWDC FINAL LAYOUT RENEWABLE TEST CENTRES Wind Marine EMEC Beatrice Frederikshavn Høvsøre (Risø) Aberdeen Myres Hill (TUV NEL) NaREC Kaiser-Wilhelm-Koog (WINDTEST) Cuxhaven (DEWI) Wilhelmshaven (DEWI) Wieringermeer (ECN) Grevenbroich Wave Hub (WINDTEST) Spain: WINDTEST and others USA: NREL TEST CENTRE OUTCOMES • Site has a good wind source • Large offshore skills base • Academic centre • Good access • Relatively benign marine environment • Range of water depths A Stepping Stone to Round 3 The Crown Estate Round 3 Timeline and the WDC timetable. AUGUST 2010 – OFFSHORE WIND DEMONSTRATION SITES CROWN ESTATE DEMONSTRATION SITES • Four awarded in August 2010 • Will play a key part in addressing the technical and cost challenges of offshore wind development • Will facilitate construction further from shore, and in deeper waters • Were awarded following an application process • Were limited to less than 100 MW capacity CROWN ESTATE DEMONSTRATION SITES • European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre • Vattenfall and Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) • To test and demonstrate up to 11 next generation offshore wind turbines CROWN ESTATE DEMONSTRATION SITES • Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration Site • NaREC • To test and demonstrate up to 20 next generation offshore wind turbines CROWN ESTATE DEMONSTRATION SITES • Methil Offshore Wind Farm • 2-B Energy • Two demonstration turbines CROWN ESTATE DEMONSTRATION SITES • Gunfleet Sands extension • DONG • Two next generation demonstration turbines Opportunities: Foundations • R3 needs perhaps 8000 foundation structures in water depths from “feet wet” to 50m • Current designs (monopiles, jackets, tripods) need to evolve: weight reductions and serial manufacture followed by type approval. • New designs need to be constructed and deployed to gain experience. • WDC focuses on 12m to 30m water depth and evolution to existing designs. Opportunities: Construction • O&G construction fleet will be called upon for R3 • Track record to date is “variable” • Opportunity to construct for a benign and understanding client. • Gain experience of new technologies first Opportunities: Vocational Training Aberdeen Helicopter Operator: “We currently use a site 100km offshore Aberdeen for training our pilots and crews, and would be very interested in having a closer platform.” Opportunities: Vocational Training Vocational training centres can be commercially viable, but access to realistic assets for “on the job” training is difficult to arrange. Western Power Faraday Centre: Middlesborough Opportunities: Offshore Commercial “Lab Space” • New offshore instruments are being developed and need to establish track record. • Deployment in the marine environment is the acid test of offshore reliability. Opportunities: Academic “Lab Space” • “You bring the experiment, we provide the platform: we both share the results with industry.” • Shaping industry “Best Practise” through scientific research. • Understanding the environment and “Cumulative Impact” Opportunities: O&M Trials & Training Opportunities: O&M + Logistics Hub WAVE ENERGY TIDAL ENERGY PENTLAND FIRTH/ORKNEY HydrographicHydrographic SocietySociety RenewableRenewable EnergyEnergy Iain Todd Renewables Champion 21 October 2010.
