Germany) are briefly presented. The project will include research on both fundamental as well as applied aspects of the Wadden Sea ecosystems and their interaction with local human activities. In contrast to most of the other completed or currently running ecosystem research projects on tidal coasts, a considerable part of the scientific work will also deal with aspects of ecosystem management and protection of the various marine and semiterrestrial habitats of the Wadden Sea. Considerable attention is paid to theoretical and methodological aspects of research on ecosystems and landscape units. In particular, the adoption of a hierarchical view of complex biological and environmental systems is recom- mended. INTRODUCTION Coastal regions have always been those parts of the seas that have suffered most from extensive impact by man. Right up to the more recent past this meant no serious threat to these usually highly productive and also vulnerable ecosystems. In our times, however, the coastal regions of industrial nations have to bear an ever increasing burden of nutrient and pollutant input via rivers, the atmosphere, coastal discharges, and direct release at sea. -

To this end, 12 principles for an ecosystem approach and 5 points of operational guidance have been elaborated in the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity. They have not been applied to a marine ecosystem as yet. The “Ecosystem Research Wadden Sea” of 1989-1999 provides an appropriate case study for the practicality of these principles, because its integrative approach largely corresponds to the ecosystem approach. Principle 1: The objectives of management of land, water and living resources are a matter of societal choice Intensive publicity is an insufficient foundation for implementing management actions in a national park. Stakeholders whose economic interests are affected must be invol- ved in the preparation of the management concept at an early stage (e.g. by the formation of working groups), particularly since the implementation of precise measures often requires the stakeholders’ practical experience. When dealing with controversial and complex topics, it is advisable to employ independent mediators capable of formulating proposals to reconcile diverging interests. -

Title: Looking for Fish of the Right Age: Developing Predictive Modeling for Submerged Sites Using GIS, Salmon Genetics, and the Human Ecology of Salmon Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________ Andrew Gerkey Abstract A major challenge to the study of the peopling of the Americas is that much of the Bering Land Bridge (Beringia), the geographic area that people migrating from Northeast Asia into North America would presumably have passed through, is now submerged due to sea-level rise since the last glacial maximum. The scale of this submerged land mass further adds to the challenge of how to search for archaeological evidence of the human migration. This thesis proposes an approach to submerged site discovery in Beringia intended to reduce the total area that needs to be considered in a predictive model by focusing on a key resource, salmon. The cultural importance of salmon to Indigenous peoples across the North Pacific is broadly acknowledged, and increasingly, that importance is being incorporated into hypotheses regarding the peopling of the Americas. The concept of salmon as a “magnet” resource is used here as a way to prioritize submerged areas for further analysis toward a predictive site discovery model. This paper incorporates studies of modern salmon DNA, ethnography, archaeology, and geo- spatial analyses into the preliminary phases of a predictive model. The framework of the Danish Model (Benjamin 2010) for submerged site discovery is adapted here for Beringia. The analyses discussed here are aimed at identifying areas within the larger region that would be suitable for further phase III and IV investigation. -
Vestas Wins 42 MW Order for One of the Largest Citizen-Owned Wind
News release from Vestas Central Europe Hamburg, 28 December 2016 Vestas receives 30 MW order and 20-year service contract from citizen-owned wind power plant in northern Germany Vestas has received an order for a repowering project consisting of nine V117-3.45 MW turbines from Bürger-Windpark Lübke-Koog Nord GmbH & Co.KG The firm and unconditional order comprises supply and commissioning of the wind turbines as well as a 20-year full-scope Active Output Management 5000 (AOM5000) service agreement. The wind turbines will be installed at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Lübke-Koog in Schleswig-Holstein, close to the North Sea. The project is a repowering project and replaces thirteen V80-2.0 MW turbines. Wind turbine delivery and commissioning is planned for the third quarter of 2017. Lübke-Koog has a long tradition of citizen-owned wind power plants and is home of the first citizen- owned wind park in Germany, installed in 1991. After the repowering project is completed, 95% of all citizens of Lübke Koog will be participating in the project. “We are very proud of this high participation rate, which creates a strong local support for wind energy. The wind power plant will make an important contribution to regional value creation through tax revenue and donations, supporting local cultural and social activities,” says Arne Möbest, General Manager of Bürger-Windpark Lübke-Koog Nord. “We are working with Vestas since 2004. The Cultural Heritage of the Wadden Sea 1. Overview Name: Wadden Sea Delimitation: Between the Zeegat van Texel (i.e. Marsdiep, 52° 59´N, 4° 44´E) in the west, and Blåvands Huk in the north-east. On its seaward side it is bordered by the West, East and North Frisian Islands, the Danish Islands of Fanø, Rømø and Mandø and the North Sea. Its landward border is formed by embankments along the Dutch provinces of North- Holland, Friesland and Groningen, the German state of Lower Saxony and southern Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein. Size: Approx. 12,500 square km. Location-map: Borders from west to east the southern mainland-shore of the North Sea in Western Europe. Origin of name: ‘Wad’, ‘watt’ or ‘vad’ meaning a ford or shallow place. This is presumably derives from the fact that it is possible to cross by foot large areas of this sea during the ebb-tides (comparable to Latin vadum, vado, a fordable sea or lake). Relationship/similarities with other cultural entities: Has a direct relationship with the Frisian Islands and the western Danish islands and the coast of the Netherlands, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and south Denmark. Characteristic elements and ensembles: The Wadden Sea is a tidal-flat area and as such the largest of its kind in Europe. A tidal-flat area is a relatively wide area (for the most part separated from the open sea – North Sea ̶ by a chain of barrier- islands, the Frisian Islands) which is for the greater part covered by seawater at high tides but uncovered at low tides.
