However, I disagree with the suggestion to stash cash “In your toiletries/first aid bag”. Thieves may be interested in stealing controlled medication like Vicodin. If they take your toiletries bag, they’ll also get the money you hid in there.

You didn’t add ‘in your credit card account’ to your PayPal suggestion. Some credit cards pay interest if you deposit money. And they can be replaced in 24 – 48 hours anywhere in the world if the worst happens.
