Zajedničkim na- porima iseljeništva i matičnoga naroda Lijepa naša prolazi preobrazbu i oblikuje se kao centar stabilnosti, sigurnosti i suradnje u ovom dijelu Europe. Dva su desetljeća Ouspješnih društvenih mijena u domovini, koja postaje sve poželjnijim mjestom po- vratka ili barem turističkim odredištem ljudima hrvatskoga podrijetla, koji su iskusili globalne društvene pokrete sedamdesetih i osamdesetih prošloga stoljeća na raznim meridijanima pa radosno iščekuju ulazak moderne Hrvatske u planetarnu višejezičnu zajednicu bez premca - Eu- ropsku uniju, dajući i dalje potporu nama u matičnoj zemlji, koji zacjeljujući ratne rane, katkada znamo i zatomiti svoj osmijeh na licu za europsku sutrašnjicu. Izgradnja institucija koje odgo- varaju potrebama čovjeka 21. stoljeća naš je zajednički zadatak – institucija koje će se uspješno suočavati s daljnjim izazovima tranzicije i globalizacije, te povezivati naš raseljeni narod na novim osnovama. U tome su smislu u ovome godištu Zbornika poticajni prilozi koje su pisali mlađi stručnjaci iz iseljeništva poput E. Zelića, Lj. Z. Matin i M. Palatin. Njima su se pridružili zanimljivim prilozima i naši renomirani poznavatelji migrantskih prilika kao što su Lj. Antić, S. Vulić, B. Petrač, D. A. Jelinčić, Lj. Krasić, T. Nuić, G. Borić ili pak A. D. Bezić. Bezićeva priča iz Južne Amerike središnja je tema ovoga broja Matičina godišnjaka, posve- ćena jednoj od najmoćnijih obiteljskih kompanija svijeta u vlasništvu Luksicevih – čileanske obitelji bračkih korijena koja djeluje i u Hrvatskoj, gdje se ističe inovativnošću. Luksicevi u RH uspješno posluju od njezina osamostaljenja, pretežito u turizmu. Slijedeći svjetske tendencije u korporativnoj fi lantropiji, javnost osvajaju dijeleći stipendije Hrvatima za ugledno Sveučilište Harvard. Tematske cjeline Znaci vremena, Baština, Kroatistički obzori, Mostovi, Povjesnica, Duhovnost, Znanost, te Nove knjige bogate su raznorodnim tekstovima o našim uglednim znanstvenici- ma, književnicima iz hrvatskih manjinskih zajednica, pjesnicima i prevoditeljima iz europskih metropola, kao i humanitarnim djelatnicima sa svih kontinenata. No, najdirljivija je priča o do- brotvornim aktivnostima hrvatskih žena iz Chicaga, kojima iskreno zahvaljujemo na iskazanoj nesebičnoj ljubavi prema osobama u potrebi. Među 38 samostalnih autorskih priloga, koji povezuju iseljeništvo iz tridesetak zemalja svijeta sa starim zavičajem, izdvajamo priloge vezane uz odlazak Slavonaca u Novi svijet, te onaj koji govori o reprezentativnoj izložbi Slavonija, Baranja i Srijem - vrela europske civilizacije, koja je ove godine našu najveću ravnicu pokazala u drukčijemu svjetlu, osobito s kapitalnim prinosima pretpovijesnih kultura kakva je vučedolska, koja mijenja povijesnu sliku onodobne Europe. INTRODUCTION t has been eighteen years since Croatia regained its independence. By the collective efforts of emigrant and homeland Croatia, Our Beautiful Homeland is undergoing a transforma- tion and is shaping itself as a centre of stability, security and cooperation in this part of IEurope. The homeland has seen two decades of successful social metamorphosis, and for people with Croatian roots around the world who experienced the global social movements of the 1970s and 1980s, and are in joyfully anticipation of the accession of modern Croatia to a planetary multilingual community without peer – the European Union – and who continue to offer those of us in the country of origin who, healing the wounds of war, are sometimes wont to stifl e the expectant smile of a European tomorrow, Croatia is rapidly becoming an ever more desirable place to come back to, at least as a tourist destination. To build the institutions that meet the needs of 21st century man is our common mission – institutions that will successfully meet the further challenges of transition and globalisation, and bind our scattered nation on new foundations. In this sense this year’s Almanac brings encouraging contributions written by young experts from the emigrant communities, people like E. Zelić, Lj. Matin and M. Palatin. These have been joined by the fascinating contributions of our renowned migration experts, such as Lj. Antić, S. Vulić, B. Petrač, D. Jelinčić, Lj. Krasić, T. Nuić, G. Borić and A. D. Bezić. Bezić’s South American story is the focal theme of this issue of the CHF Almanac, dedicated to one of the most powerful family-owned companies in the world, owned by the Luksic’s – a Chilean family with roots on the island of Brač, a fi rm also active in Croatia where it is promi- nent by its innovative approach. The Luksic’s have had successful operations in Croatia since it regained its independence, for the most part in the tourism sector. Keeping apace with global tendencies in corporate philanthropy, the company has gained public affi rmation through its program of scholarships for Croatians at the respected Harvard University. The thematic sections Signs Of The Times, Heritage, Croatian Philological Horizons, Bridges, A History, Spirituality, Science and New Books present a wealth of diverse articles discussing our eminent researchers, writers and Croatian minority communities, poets and translators from European metropolises, and philanthropists from every continent. But certainly the most touching story is that of the volunteer activities of the Croatian women of Chicago, who we thank sincerely for the unselfi sh love they have demonstrated towards those in need. Among the 38 independent contributions, linking emigrant communities in thirty countries around the world with the old country, are articles dealing with the departure of Croatians from the Slavonia region to the New World, on the representative Slavonia, Baranja & Srijem – A Wellspring of European Civilisation exhibition, which this year portrayed our greatest fl atland region in a new light, in particular by its major contribution through prehistoric cultures like that of Vučedol, a contribution that has changed the historical landscape of ancient Europe. INTRODUCCIÓN ieciocho años han transcurrido desde la proclamación de la independencia de la Re- pública de Croacia. Con aunados esfuerzos - tanto de los croatas de la diáspora como de los de la Patria - la República de Croacia se está transformando y convirtiendo en un Dcentro de estabilidad, seguridad y cooperación en esta parte de Europa. Se cumplieron dos décadas de exitosos cambios sociales en la Patria, que comienza a ser un lugar de retorno, o por lo menos de destinación turística cada vez más deseable para las personas de orígen croata, que en diversos meridianos experimentaron los movimientos sociales globales de los años setenta y ochenta del siglo pasado, por lo cual se alegran por el pronto ingreso de Croacia en la comuni- dad planetaria multilingüe sin igual - la Unión Europea. En ese sentido, siguen brindándonos su apoyo a los que vivimos en la Madre Patria, que curando las heridas de guerra a veces solemos reprimir una sonrisa para el mañana europeo. Es nuestra tarea conjunta construir instituciones que correspondan a las necesidades del hombre del siglo 21 - instituciones que sabrán responder exitosamente a los próximos desafíos de la transición y globalización, y que vincularán a nuestro pueblo disperso sobre nuevas bases. En el presente Anuario 2010 son motivantes los artículos de los jóvenes expertos de la diáspora, como E. Zelić, Lj. Matin y M. Palatin. A ellos se sumaron con interesantes contribuciones otros renombrados conocedores de las condiciones en la emigración, como ser Lj. Antić, S. Vulić, B. Petrač, D. Jelinčić, Lj. Krašić, T. Nuić, G.     Croatia and “Ethnic Cleansing” Croatia and “Ethnic Cleansing” Akiko Shimizu Introduction There is a computer set up in the permanent Holocaust exhibition in London’s Imperial War Museum, in which, along with Jews, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses and the mentally disabled, “hundreds of thousands” of Serbian residents of the “Independent State of Croatia” (NDH) are listed as victims of genocide. However, in the permanent exhibition dealing with genocide, the massacre of the Serbs earns no mention. It appears that the museum accepts the massacres as fact, but their displays are seemingly set up so as to attract little attention. As this style of exhibition demonstrates, while there are not many who do not know of Auschwitz, there are very few who know of “Jasenovac”. “Jasenovac” is the name for a system of incarceration chambers and concentration camps which existed in the “Independent State of Croatia”. After World War II, it was estimated that between 600,000 and 700,000 people died in this, the largest of the incarceration facilities in Croatia. In the 1990s too, the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, a major German daily newspaper, gave an estimate of 500,000, while the Holocaust Studies Centre in Washington’s Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates that “at least 250,000” Serbians were killed by the “Croatian authorities” between 1941 and 1943. 1) However, the Republic of Croatia, which gained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, has not acknowledged this massacre. In April 1991 (the fiftieth anniversary of Germany’s invasion of Yugoslavia), Tudjman, who became later the first President of Croatia, declared the number of victims to be 30,000.

Traveling around Croatia, I was stunned by its beauty. However, I noticed that there were few Chinese tourists in Croatia. How can we bring more Chinese tourists to Croatia? How can we make them happy and comfortable in Croatia? And, at the same time, how can we avoid polluting this tract of pure land? Based on first-hand research work, I make a SWOT analysis of the Chinese tourist source market of Croatia and put forward related countermeasures from the perspective of a native Chinese. The positioning of tourism in Croatia should be ingeniously packaged. I recommend developing diversified and specialized tourist products, various marketing and promotional activities, simple and flexible visa policies and regulations, and other related measures to further explore the Chinese tourist source market of Croatia.     Review of Croatian History 13/2017, no. 1, 229 - 275 Vladimir Geiger, Mario Jareb, Davor Kovačić, Jadovno i Šaranova jama: Kontroverze i manipulacije [The Jadovno Concentration Camp and the Šaran Pit: Controversies and Manipulations] (Zagreb: Hrvatski institut za povijest, 2017) Summary In the aftermath of the Second World War, the destruction and human toll wrought upon the territory of Yugoslavia, including Croatia, was extremely high. According to all indications, in the Independent State of Croatia (Nezavisna Država Hrvatska - NDH) the human loss was particularly high and tragic in the Jewish and Roma communities, as well as for the Serbs. The NDH used racial laws to determine how to deal with the Jews and Roma, while the Serbs were exposed to various forms of discrimination, persecution and violence. Furthermore, some victims of these perse- cutions and restrictive measures were Cro- ats who were declared enemies of the New Order of Europe and violated the interests of this model for the Croatian state. As shown by varied and numerous evidence, the repressive measures and sowing of ter- ror among the enemies and adversaries of the NDH and the German Reich resulted in high levels of human loss, numerous individual and mass murders, forced la- bour and concentration camps. Investiga- tions have revealed different, and for many events and places relevant, indicators, with possible minor deviations, concerning the scale of the systematic repression enacted against Jews, Roma, and Serbs, and also those who were considered to be enemies of the NDH’s “new order”. The question of fatality statistics from World War II in Yugoslavia, including Croatia, became one of the most important political issues in the conflict’s immediate aftermath and has remained so until today.

  • Women's Fashion in Dalmatia at the End of the 18Th Century
    Please provide footnote text CHAPTER 3 Women’s Fashion in Dalmatia at the End of the 18th Century Katarina Nina Simončič Introduction This chapter aims to define the role of fashion garments as indicators of social status and a highly important aspect of visual communication among the so- cial elites in 18th-century Dalmatia. The focal point of this overview is women’s fashion. To achieve this goal, through research of historical artefacts from the Dalmatian territory, it is essential to address first the availability of sources and to explain possible problems we encountered in our attempt to reconstruct and comprehend particular historical circumstances. While preserved fashion artefacts of the privileged social class in 18th-century Dalmatia are very scarce, garments that belonged to lower classes are unavailable and can only be re- constructed from observations of travel writers or from court records. Certain fashion garments and accessories of the upper classes are currently preserved in museums in Zagreb, Split, Zadar, Sibenik and Dubrovnik. These include two women’s jackets made of red and blue silk with gold and silver bobbin lace trimmings, which belonged to the Kasandric family on the island of Hvar; fans; lace artefacts and footwear. A larger and more substantial collection of mens- wear is preserved in the Rector’s Palace in Dubrovnik. Since preserved artefacts are scarce and rarely found, they cannot provide sufficient information to re- construct the social climate of the 18th century, when garments, i.e. fashion, functioned as a status symbol. Historical records prove the continuity of a rich cultural life in Dalmatia from the Renaissance to the 18th century.

    Maja Šojat-Bikić UDK 004.82:39](497.5) Zagreb City Museum 004.738.5:008](497.5) Zagreb Original scientific paper Croatia Received: May 5, 2011 [email protected] Accepted: May 16, 2011 Croatian Traditional Heritage Online: Status and Opportunities The article is based on the research of the websites of Croatian ethnographic museums, museums, associations, religious communities and private collectors who collect and preserve ethnographic materials, public libraries that have local history collections, the official websites of institutions of state administration and local self-government and tourist boards, and attempts to depict the situation of the availability of tangible and intangible traditional heritage on the Croatian web. It shows the few examples of good practice which are in most cases not the result of institutional care for tradi- tional heritage, but the work of creative individuals and associations. The publication of these first three books attests to the fact that the 2003 Convention has now reached the crucial operational phase. The successful implementation of this ground-breaking legal instrument remains one of UNESCO’s priority actions, and one to which I am firmly committed. In 2008, before my election as Director-General of UNESCO, I had the privilege of chairing one of the sessions of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, in Sofia, Bulgaria. This enriching experience reinforced my personal convictions regarding the significance of intangible cultural heritage, its fragility, and the urgent need to safeguard it for future generations.
