• 262 Gran Torino
262 Gran Torino: Social and Security Implications of the XX Winter Olympic Games Chiara Fonio Giovanni Pisapia 263 This paper examines issues relating to the security of the XX Winter Olympic Games, which took place in Turin, Italy, from the 10 th to the 26 th of February 2006. In doing so it explores three crucial aspects of those Games, first, the general social context, second forms of resistance directed against the Winter Games and third the Integrated Security System (ISS) which was developed for and implemented at the sporting venues. This included installing a number of surveillance technologies that sought to address distinctive security concerns. Our aim is to emphasize not only the trend towards the securitization of mega-events at a national and international level, but to also understand some of the broader social implications of the Olympics. In the process, our work also contributes to the literature on the XX Winter Games which to date has tended to be quite thin and fragmented (Bondonio and Campaniello 2006a; Bertone and Degiorgis 2006). We have chosen to emphasize these factors because of some of the unique peculiarities of the XX Winter Olympics. One of the most important of these concerns the smaller scale of the Turin Games, which translated into a series of security measures that contrast with the typical overzealous security planning for mega events. So, this smaller scale meant that the security dynamics, surveillance practices and legacies tended to be more limited than the types of intensive security systems implemented in Athens (Samatas 2008) or Beijing (Boyle and Haggerty 2009: 266).

  • Ulriken Tunnel
www.aplitop.com APLITOP Case Study TITLE Ulriken Tunnel USER AND COMPANY Company: AZVI Norge Web: www.azvi.es Location: Bergen (Norway) Name: Joan González Pi Position: Surveying Manager / BIM Manager E-mail: [email protected] Main activities: The Azvi Group is divided into four business areas: construction, concessions, real estate developments and rail transport. It has a presence in Europe, America and the Middle East. PROJECT CHALLENGES Azvi has signed the contract with Bane NOR (Norwegian public railway infrastructure manager) to carry out the rehabilitation of the old Ulriken railway tunnel in Bergen, within a period of 29 months. This tunnel was built in the 1960s and runs parallel to the new Ulriken tunnel. The rehabilitation will consist of the widening of the tunnel section, at different points along the 7.6 km length. In order to carry it out, 38,000 m3 of rock must be excavated. In the central 6.2 km of the tunnel, it will be necessary to blast more than 100 sections without dismantling the track. This is a great challenge for Azvi, for which it has designed an innovative technical proposal, which has been highly valued by Bane NOR. The project is totally designed in a BIM environment, which information is available mostly in IFC and XML formats. The rehabilitation consists of expanding the tunnel section and subsequently covering it, leaving a space between the waterproofing and the rock to be able to drain the leaks from the mountain. By having several layers, the tunnel section is a challenge for the control of the execution of the work.

  • An Application of the Graph Theory Which Examines the Metro Networks
TRANSPORT PROBLEMS 2015 PROBLEMY TRANSPORTU Volume 10 Issue 2 metro network; graph theory; cluster analysis Svetla STOILOVA*, Veselin STOEV Technical University of Sofia boulevard Kliment Ohridski 8, Sofia, Bulgaria *Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] AN APPLICATION OF THE GRAPH THEORY WHICH EXAMINES THE METRO NETWORKS Summary. The graph theory gives a mathematical representation of transport networks and allows us to study their characteristics effectively. A research of the structure of metro system has been conducted in the study by using the graph theory. The study includes subway systems of 22 European capitals. New indicators have been defined in the research such as a degree of routing, a connectivity of the route, average length per link (which takes into account the number of routes), intensity of the route, density of the route. The new and the existing indicators have been used to analyze and classify the metro networks. The statistical method cluster analysis has been applied to classify the networks. Ten indicators have been used to carry out an analysis. The metro systems in European capitals have been classified in three clusters. The first cluster includes large metro systems, the second one includes small metro networks whereas the third cluster includes metro networks with only one line. The combination of both two methods has been used for the first time in this research. The methodology could be used to evaluate other existing metro networks as well as for preliminary analysis in the design of subway systems.
