Direct Connect and Dial-Up on Windows NT

Introduction This document explains how to configure Windows NT for direct serial and dial-up connections between a Personal Computer (PC) running Windows NT and an N30 Supervisory Controller System, an M-Series Workstation, or M-Tool. This document describes how to: • add a direct serial connection communications port • install dial-up networking • add and configure a phonebook entry for a direct serial connection • add a modem • add and configure a phonebook entry for a dial-up (modem) connection In addition, remote N30/M-Series Workstation sites can dial into M-Series Workstations running on Windows NT with notification of alarms. This document also describes additional steps needed to use this feature: • add Remote Access Services (RAS) • add users to RAS • start RAS • start RAS automatically Direct Connect and Dial-Up on Windows NT Application Note 3

Key Concepts

Remote Access Services (RAS) The feature in Windows NT that enables users to log into a Windows NT-based Local Area Network (LAN) using a modem, X.25 connection, or Wide Area Network (WAN) link. RAS works with several major network protocols, including Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). To use RAS from a remote node, you need an RAS client program, which is built into most versions of Windows® software, or any Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) client software. In order for remote N30 Supervisory Controllers (N30) or M-Series Workstations to dial into a workstation with alarms, RAS must be installed, configured properly, and running. RAS is also required for dialing out to other sites.

Dial-Up Networking Accessory in Windows operating systems that allows remote access to other computers and devices. Note: For both direct serial and dial-up (modem) connections, Windows dial-up networking must be installed. Installation of dial-up networking is an option with Windows NT that may or may not be currently installed on the PC.

TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is the suite of communications protocols used to connect hosts on the Internet. TCP/IP uses several protocols, the two main ones being TCP and IP. TCP/IP is built into the UNIX and is used by the Internet, making it the defacto standard for transmitting data over networks. Even network operating systems with their own protocols, such as NetWare, also support TCP/IP.

PPP Point-to-Point Protocol is a protocol for communication between computers using TCP/IP over standard telephone lines, ISDN, and other high-speed connections. PPP can be used to connect a computer to the Internet. PPP can be used with both synchronous and asynchronous transmission. 4 Direct Connect and Dial-Up on Windows NT Application Note

PPP Password This is the password used when establishing a PPP connection. This password is defined in Site Book when setting up the connection information used to connect M-Series Workstations or Project Builder to an N30. It is used to establish a connection from M-Tool, or an M-Series Workstation, to an N30 site. The PPP password set in Site Book must match exactly the PPP password set in the N30 Device object to communicate. This password is not the same as the operator password.

Direct Serial Connection When using a direct serial connection or a dial-up serial connection, the M-Tool System Tools communications component uses PPP. Windows NT has connection options that support direct serial connections.

Direct Serial Communications Checklist Setting up communications between a PC and an external device is a multi-step process. Table 1 is a guide to verify all the steps required for successful communications are complete.

Table 1: Direct Serial Communications Checklist Step Task Completed 1 Verify that Dial-up Networking is installed. See Installing Dial-up Networking in this document. 2 Verify that Dial-up Networking Serial Cable Between 2 PCs is available as a modem connection. See Adding a Direct Serial Connection Communications Port in this document. 3 Add a phonebook entry for a direct serial connection. See Adding and Configuring a Phonebook Entry for a Direct Serial Connection in this document. 4 Go to the Site Book and define a site using the direct serial connection’s phonebook entry. See Adding a Direct Serial or Dial-Up (Modem) Connection Site in the Site Book User’s Guide (LIT-6893100). 5 To continue with generating databases for N30s, see the flowcharts in the Database Generation section of the N30 Supervisory Controller Quick Start Technical Bulletin (LIT-6891200). Dial-Up (Modem) Communications Checklist Setting up dial-up (modem) communications on a PC is a multi-step process. Table 2 is a guide to verify all the steps required for successful communications are completed.

Table 2: Dial-Up (Modem) Communications Checklist Step Task Completed 1 Verify that Dial-up Networking is installed. See Installing Dial-up Networking in this document. 2 Verify that the modem you are using is installed. On the Windows Start , select > . Double-click the Modems . If the modem you want to use is not on the Modems Properties screen, go to Adding a Modem in this document. 3 Verify that RAS is installed. Install RAS if it is not already installed. See Adding Remote Access Services (RAS) in this document. 4 Add phonebook entries for each site with which you want to have dial-up communications. See Adding and Configuring a Phonebook Entry for a Dial-Up (Modem) Connection in this document. 5 To enable dial-in alarms, set up RAS. See Adding Users to RAS and, optionally, Starting RAS and Starting RAS Automatically. 6 Go to Site Book and define a site using the site’s network connection icon or phonebook entry. See Adding a Direct Serial or Dial-Up (Modem) Connection Site in the Site Book User’s Guide (LIT-6893100). 7 To continue with generating databases for N30s, see the flowcharts in the Database Generation section of the N30 Supervisory Controller Quick Start Technical Bulletin (LIT-6891200). Detailed Procedures Note: All the procedures in this document were performed in order on a PC running Windows NT Version 4.0 with Service Pack 6 installed. The machine was started without any modems installed. Due to differences in what is installed on a given site’s PC, individual screen shots may vary from what you see when performing these procedures.

Adding a Direct Serial Connection Communications Port To add a direct serial connection communications port: 1. On the Windows Start menu, click Settings > Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Modems icon. If no modems are installed on your machine, the Install New Modem wizard starts (Figure 1). Note: If modems are installed on your machine, the Modems Properties screen appears (Figure 5). If Dial-up Networking Serial Cable between 2 PCs is on the modems list, then the Direct Serial Connection Communications Port already has been added.
