Configuring Your Speech Recognition By Scott Badger

You have the ability to dictate within your applications as well as saying commands. You can be free from using your keyboard and mouse or Tablet pen if you wish.

1. Click the Start and then select .

2. Click Speech Recognition Options.

3. Within the Speech Recognition dialog box, select Start Speech Recognition.

5. Select the type of microphone. 3

10. Select either Enable document review or Disable document view. 11. Click Next.

12. Click View Reference Sheet.

15. By default Run Speech Recognition startup is checked. 16. Click Next.

Taking the Speech Tutorial

18. Click Take Speech Tutorial if you clicked Cancel in the Setup Speech Recognition dialog box.

19. The tutorial will open and you will be able to teach your traditional or Tablet PC your speech. 20. You will notice that you’ll be going through 6 different sections which are Welcome, Basics, Dictation, Commanding, Working With Windows, and Conclusion. Below are things that you’ll be learning in this tutorial. a. Basic i. Say Start listening ii. Say Stop listening iii. Say Show Speech options iv. Say Hide Speech Recognitions v. Say Show Speech Recognition vi. Say What can I say – this will open the Speech Recognition Reference Card. b. Dictation – “As you use dictation more and more, you’ll learn more advanced dictation commands. These commands are listed on your Speech Reference Card which can be opened by saying ‘What can I say’” Speech Recognition Tutorial i. Say Select Word through Word ii. Say Delete that iii. Say Delete Word iv. Say Undo that v. Say Clear selection vi. Say New Paragraph vii. Say New Line viii. Say Correct Word – if word is not in the list of correct spelling then say spell it and spell out word letter by letter. ix. Say Go to Word x. Say Go to the end of the document xi. Say Go to the start of the document xii. Say Go after Word xiii. Say Select previous sentence xiv. Say Select next two sentences xv. Say Press letter xvi. Say Enter xvii. Say Space xviii. Commanding – “Speech Recognition allows you to control windows, work with menus, and click buttons, all using your voice.” Speech Recognition Tutorial i. Say Start All Programs Accessories Wordpad ii. Say Show – you can get to your desktop from anywhere. iii. Say Numbers – When any window is open, such as Word or Browser, you can say numbers and all of the clickable options within the window will be assigned a number. Say the number to select it and then say OK to confirm selection. iv. Say Scroll down v. Say Scroll up vi. Say Scroll down 10 vii. Say Scroll up 20 viii. Say Minimize that ix. Say Close that x. In a program, say Go to subject xi. In a browser, say Go to address xii. When multiple programs are opened, say Switch to application name (i.e. Wordpad) xiii. Starting a program, you can say Start program name

Training Your computer to Better Understand You

21. Within the Speech Recognition dialog box, select train your computer to better understand you. 11

22. Click Next.

23. Say “I am now speaking to my computer. 12

24. After you have said that sentence another sentence will pop up. 25. You will go through and say many sentences.

26. After you have read out the sentences, you will be able to do more voice training by clicking the More Training button. (Note: Even though you have a choice to do more training, it is recommended that you do the additional training so that you can better train your computer to recognize your voice.) 27. After you’re done learning your voice, click Finish.

Speech Reference Card

28. Within the Speech Recognition dialog box, click Open the Speech Reference Card.

29. Click on one of the hyperlinked text (blue text) to get a listing of what to say.

Setting Up Your Microphone

30. Click Set up microphone.

31. Select the type of microphone. 32. Click Next.

33. Click Next.

34. Talk into your microphone to make sure that microphone is being recognized by your computer. 35. Click Next.

36. Click Finish.

Using Speech Recognition

37. Once you have gone through and set up your Speech Recognition, the Speech Recognition window will appear at the top of your screen.

38. If you don’t see your Speech Recognition then click Start > Accessories > > Windows Speech Recognition.

39. If you don’t want it to listening you’re voice say “Stop Listening”. (Note: When it’s not listening to your voice, you will see the word Sleeping.) 40. When you want it to listen to your voice say “Start Listening”.
