The hilly eastern region is characterized by the Tama Hills and Miura Peninsula. The first began in 1192, when the first military government was established in Kamakura. This made Kanagawa the centre of the Japanese political scene. The second period commenced in 1859, when the Port of Yokohama was opened to the world after more than 200 years of strict national isolation. Since then, Kanagawa became the gateway for the introduction of Western civilization. The third period was the 1950s, when the Japanese economy was being reconstructed after World War II. During this period, along with the development of the Keihin Industrial Belt, Kanagawa played a significant role in rebuilding the war-devastated Japanese economy.

Section 1 Constructing Trafc Networks Chapter 6 Building Competitive Economy and Society Section 1 Constructing Trafc Networks 1 Developing Trunk Road Networks (1) Developing Trunk Road Networks Since the First Five-Year Road Construction Plan formulated in 1954, Japanese highways have been continually con- structed. For example, the construction of national highway networks, including expressways, has provided a major impe- tus in the rejuvenation of regional economies by encouraging plant locations near expressway interchanges. Additionally, it has helped enhance the quality and safety of national life by making broad-area medical services accessible to rural II areas and allowing broad rerouting to avoid highway disruption by natural disasters. An example includes the Sakai-Koga IC to Tsukuba Chuo IC segment of the Metropolitan Intercity Expressway Chapter 6 (Ken-O Expressway) opened on February 26, 2017, which resulted in roughly 90% connection of the 300 km of total roadway on the Expressway. This development is expected to attract more businesses and promote sightseeing activities. On the other hand, there are still missing links of expressways and arterial road networks in other parts of the country, which we plan to develop in a systematical manner. • Follow the Rules! Ride Bicycles Properly!
February 1 - March 31, 2009 http://www.city.yokohama.jp/me/naka/e/ No. 103 2009 YOKOHAMA 150th Anniversary of the Opening of the Port of Yokohama Follow the Rules! Ride BicyclesBicycles Properly! Do you use a bicycle daily? Recently, more people are riding bicycles instead of driving cars because of the costs of car usage and gasoline, out of concern over global warming, and/or for exercise to maintain their health. While bicycles are ridden easily and casually, a major new issue is the deterioration of the manners of riders – reckless and dangerous riding on sidewalks. In Kanagawa Prefecture, Naka Ward is among places notorious for the high frequency of bicycle accidents. As a result, in 2007, Naka Ward was described as a “zone” of bicycle accidents. Traffic manners need special attention. No-parking areas for bicycles and other rules are introduced here. Riders, observe traffic rules and ride safely! Have you seen these? Have you done them yourself? • Inconsiderate parking is not only dangerous, but spoils the town landscape - Bicycles parked on sidewalks interfere with pedestrians (particularly mothers pushing baby carriages). - Parking on braille blocks is dangerous for the visually impaired (braille blocks guide them as they move). - Leaving a bicycle for a long time could result in your being accused of illegal dumping. Bicycle thefts are increasing. Stolen bicycles are then often left on the streets. • To prevent thefts: - Double lock bicycles. - At the time of purchase, be sure to register the bicycle. Bicycle no-parking areas expanded - Park properly in designated areas. Last autumn, bicycle no-parking areas around Sakuragicho Station, Hinodecho Station and the Motomachi-Chukagai Station were expanded.
