Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. • United Edge Records & Textbook Music Interview
United Edge Records & Textbook Music Interview To me, United Edge Records was one of the record labels that I could pickup anything from and know that it was going to be quality metalcore. Same thing for the post-hardcore fad during the mid-2000’s that was practically held up with Textbook Music in the forefront. It was always quality material. The person responsible for that was Andrea “Edge” Goonan. A native Canadian from Saskatchewan, she moved to Calgary, Alberta and then to New York City in 2002 , where she continued the record label operations there. Andrea has moved on to other things and I wanted to interview her before all those memories faded. • Dead Season Official Biography
Dead Season Official Biography -Formation (June 1997 – October 1997) Dead Season was one of the many bands formed by ex members of Two Line Filler. Two Line Filler, under the line up of Matt White on vocals, Colin Clark and Al Biddle on guitars, Mike Calder on bass and Jon Drew on drums, had just finished an incredibly successful mid-western/east coast United States tour with The Enkindels (the first Enkindel tour under the new name) in mid-June of 1997. Two Line Filler, then signed to New Red Archives, was considering signing with Arista Records, who had already offered them a deal. Additionally, they were receiving offers to play shows with Texas is the Reason, Hot Water Music, Avail and even one of Colin Sears’ post-Dag Nasty bands, all amounting to enough dates for another east coast US tour that summer. Despite all of this, Matt White, not liking the direction the band was going, decided that he wasn’t up for it and announced that Two Line Filler was over. The other four members, unwilling to pass up such an opportunity, decided to continue in a new band sans Matt White, with Colin assuming vocal duties as well as guitar. Without an official band name, they immediately started writing new material, in the style of “Life Isn’t Fair (Screams the Kid Again)”, the last song Two Line Filler had written. This song had been a huge hit on the tour with The Enkindels, but Matt didn’t like the direction the music was going in.

  • Milam County, Texas - Its Evolution and Leaders
MILAM COUNTY, TEXAS - ITS EVOLUTION AND LEADERS MILAM COUNTY, TEXAS ITS EVOLUTION AND LEADERS February 2021 Page 1 MILAM COUNTY, TEXAS - ITS EVOLUTION AND LEADERS A NOTE TO THE READERS Milam County, Texas. I always add those three words to my writings and communications – I want people to know I live here. So, in 2019 when Milam County Judge Steve Young asked me if I would write a report about the history of the Milam County Commissioners Court – I did not hesitate to say “Of course I will.” Soon after beginning the research for this report, I realized that a simple listing of the names of county judges and commissioners serving Milam County since the birth of the Republic of Texas in 1836 would not provide an adequate appreciation of Milam County’s rich history. Consequently, I decided to provide Readers a deeper dive into the birth of Milam County government by adding comprehensive facts about the geographical and legislative origins of Milam County, towns that served as ‘County Seat’ for Milam County, and courthouses that housed Milam County government for the last 184 years. But the thread that ties together all of the following story’s facets is the people who came before: those who were frontier settlers – those who founded towns – those who risked their lives to protect others – those who died protecting others - those who simply lived their lives as best they could – and those who helped govern Milam County for the common good. I added a few biographical notes to acquaint you with some of these people.

SURFING FOR PUNKS: THE INTERNET AND THE PUNK SUBCULTURE IN NEW JERSEY by AARON ROBERT FURGASON A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Communication, Information and Library Studies written under the direction of Professor Linda Steiner And approved by ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October, 2008 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION SURFING FOR PUNKS: THE INTERNET AND THE PUNK SUBCULTURE IN NEW JERSEY BY AARON ROBERT FURGASON Dissertation Director Professor Linda Steiner This study examines the influence of the Internet on the punk subculture in New Jersey. Previous research by academics on the effect of the Internet on popular music has centered on the impact of Napster and peer-to-peer networks on the distribution of recordings (Alexander, 2002; Ayres & Williams, 2004; Bishop, 2004; Daniel & Klimis, 1999; Fox, 2004; Mardesich, 1999; & Oberholzer & Strumpf, 2004). However, unexamined is the influence of the Internet on a specific music subculture, punk. This is important because the subculture is occupied mainly by youth engaged with both the Internet and punk music. The Internet's influence on the punk subculture is a particularly important area of study because the Internet alters how participants in the subculture (punk fans, bands and independent labels) communicate with one another, as well as changes the distribution of punk artifacts and information. ii Central to this study is the history of the major labels' dominance over the distribution and promotion of punk music, a domination examined via critical political economy theory.

  • The Body of the Witch in Popular Culture
HEX APPEAL: THE BODY OF THE WITCH IN POPULAR CULTURE Marley Stuever-Williford A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2021 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Esther Clinton Angela Nelson © 2020 Marley Stuever-Williford All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown, Advisor This thesis investigates the relationship between the body of the witch in popular culture and attitudes and assumptions about the female body. This study was conducted through textual analysis of several popular films and television shows about witches. This analysis is structured around three core archetypes of femininity: the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone, examining how each of the three archetypes preserve stereotypes about women and how witches can subvert or reinforce those stereotypes. Using the theory of abjection as a foundation, this thesis argues that witches have a strong relationship to abject femininity and can therefore expose the anxieties and fears about female bodies in a patriarchal culture. This is not a comprehensive study of witches in popular culture, and further research into the intersections of gender and race, sexuality, and ability is needed to form any definite conclusions. This study is merely an exploration of female archetypes and how the female body is conceived through the witch’s body in popular culture. iv This thesis is dedicated to my mother, the strongest and kindest witch I know. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would first like to express my deepest appreciation for my thesis advisor, Jeffrey Brown, and committee members Esther Clinton and Angela Nelson for your invaluable insights not just on this project but in classes as well.
