The release is a recording snapshot of the band in their teenage years between 1983 and 1985, as they went from first demo novices lacking studio experience to a band with a firm musical vision for the recording of ‘The Bitter End’. A vision that ultimately was not shared by their label Conquest Records who, unknown to the band, remixed the album prior to its release. • ‘The Bitter End’ was recorded in March 1985 by Paul McBride (vocals), Paul Solynskyj (guitar), Martin Hawthorn (bass) and Mick Dodson (drums) at Woodlands Studios, UK with engineer Neil Ferguson, who went on to produce the hits of pop anarchists Chumbawamba. The album, which over the years has become a cult favourite amongst fans of early '80s metal, will be available on CD for the first time! • First ever official CD release! Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Malmsteen Yngwie Johann Malmsteen (born Lars Johann Yngve Lannerbäck, June 30, 1963) is a Swedish guitarist, composer and bandleader. Widely recognized as a virtuoso, Malmsteen achieved widespread acclaim in the 1980s due to his technical proficiency and his pioneering neo-classical metal. Guitar One magazine rated him the third fastest guitar shredder in the world after Michael Angelo Batio and Chris Impellitteri. Born into a musical family in Stockholm, Yngwie was the youngest child in the family. At an early age, he showed little interest in music. It wasn't until September 18, 1970 when at age seven he saw a TV special on the death of Jimi Hendrix that Malmsteen became obsessed with the guitar. To quote his official website, "The day Jimi Hendrix died, the guitar-playing Yngwie was born". He claims his first name in Swedish means "young Viking chief". Actually, it is a variation of Yngvi, who founded the House of Yngling, which is the oldest known Swedish dynasty. Malmsteen was in his teens when he first encountered the music of the 19th- José Ramón Montero Del Angel | Universidad Veracruzana century violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini, whom he cites as his biggest classical influence. It has been rumoured that Yngwie believes himself to be the reincarnation of the temperamental, often criticized,and widely misunderstood violinist from Genoa. Through his emulation of Paganini concerto pieces on guitar, Malmsteen developed a prodigious technical fluency.

I focus closely on his post- metal band Amenra, through whose music, symbolic and ritual performances – like suspension and other types of flesh hook insertions – Colin wants to convey his own spirituality and experience of existential pain. Duality of life and existence of immanent life’s pain is by him and the other members of CoR taken as a serious and grave spiritual theme, although it can be used as potential for process of healing through catharsis (both for the band members and for their audience). Moreover, I focus on Colin’s own personal spirituality with links to its broader connotations in context of CoR’s music, art, and performances – especially the extreme rituals. I will also briefly introduce and analyze so called “modern primitive movement”, through its philosophy became bodily pain sacred and extreme rituals are taken (beside else) as means to transcendental state.
