Since Hebrew books and videos for children are produced mainly for Israelis how do we find suitable ones for our day school, synagogue, or resource libraries here in the U.S.? This presentation will focus on how to choose Hebrew children’s materials, where to purchase them, a refresher on cataloging those materials, and a glimpse at some of the newer Hebrew children’s books and videos one can purchase for your library. It will also highlight some of the Hebrew children’s websites available for learning to read and speak Hebrew. Each week in our Shabbat Services, we recite a prayer of Thanksgiving to God. The Modim prayer acknowledges the role of God in our lives, morning, noon and night, and by recit- ing this prayer, we acknowledge God and say thank you for all we have in our lives. For those of us who are regular Shabbat attenders, this is part of our weekly routine. How many of us take the time to pause, think about all we have that fulfills us and makes living worthwhile and say thank you? On Shabbat, the liturgy tells us that we do not seek to acquire or to gain, we pause to count our blessings. Many of our congregants come to be with us only on the holidays and an occasional Shabbat. Shabbat Services are so much less formal than the High Holidays and they can pro- vide you with an opportunity to take a step back from the rest of the week. You can put your busy lives and smartphones down for an hour or so and relax.

Judaism insists parents provide children with love, trust, compassion, and guidance. Early childhood educators participate in the raising of children virtually at the same level as the parents. The Talmud tells us that “one who teaches the child Torah is considered as if he had borne him.” It is apparent that if we want children to actually experience how they are honored and esteemed as individuals in Jewish tradition, we must do more than teach them about the religion. We ourselves must embody the Jewish values that inform our love and respect. We must project these values through our own interactions with them and with each other, allowing them to feel in an immediate way what it is like to participate in a community based on the love God holds for each of us. These are the values that our rituals, holidays, and practices clothe in celebration and participation.

I argue that it was the ambiguous play between Greek music’s discursive value (its “image”) and the semiotic potential of its sound and music-adjacent practices, that allowed for its double-reception by Euro-Israeli elites and Working-class immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries (Mizrahim). This ambiguity positioned Greek music as a site for bypassing, negotiating, and subverting the dichotomy between Jew and Arab. Elazar Elhanan This dissertation explores the dynamics of identity construction and nation building in Hebrew and Yiddish literature in Russia and Poland in the decade following the 1905 revolution. It examines these dynamics through a study of the poetry of Yaakov Steinberg between the years 1903-1915. Steinberg, an important but little studied poet and writer, wrote extensively in both languages. He renounced Yiddish upon his immigration to Palestine. Through the comparison of Steinberg’s Hebrew poems and the poems he wrote in Yiddish this dissertation exposes the intricate relations between the languages and the political ideologies of Yiddishism and Zionism that accompanied them, in Steinberg’s work and in general. The dissertation shows how the constitution of a modern national subject became the prime concern for these literatures, both as a general ideological demand and as a personal, emotional question. By placing the conflict between the two language ideologies in the center of the debate, this dissertation seeks to point out to a serious methodological lacuna in the study of Hebrew literature and of Zionist history. By placing Yaakov Steinberg’s poetry in a wide polyglot context and defining his bilingualism as a fundamental characteristic and a major theoretic concern, this work seeks to demonstrate the depth and span of the discourse on the future of the Jews, as individuals or as a nation, that took place in the revolutionary space of turn of the century Russia.
