My husband, Colman, and I were blown away by the amazing AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) conference in Washington, D.C. this year. Yes, we were impressed with all the political dignitaries who attended and spoke to us, but what inspired and got us most enthusiastic was learning about the amazing Israeli ingenuity, Support Shofar and directory genius, and creations. We were so impressed with the inventions and advertisers. They support innovations that are as important to us in the United States as they are to the Israelis, from the Iron Dome technology to the medical our community! advances that are in the forefront of the world. We saw a paraplegic walk upright across the stage because of an invention by an Israeli who is a quadrapalegic (and who promised that he would walk next year) and learned about a dressing invented in Israel that was used to save Gabby Gifford's life. Israel is at the very cutting edge of technology and medical miracles. We should all be proud of the accomplishments of our brothers and sisters across the sea. More importantly we should all support them and make sure that everyone hears about all the positive steps that Israel is taking to create innovations used all over the world. AIPAC is the lobbying arm for Israel in Congress. We need to thank AIPAC over and over again for the wonderful job it does in educating our legislators and getting their support for Israel. 16 The Shofar April 2013 CHABAD OF CHATTANOOGA n. Chabad Of ChattariOOga by Rabbi ShaulPerhtein

On the 18th of Iyar we celebrate Lag BaOmer- 33 days into the counting of the Omer. During the Omer period (seven weeks between Pesach and Shavuot) we mourn the deaths of 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva who died in a plague. The Talmud tells us that it was because "they did not conduct themselves with respect for each other." However Lag BaOmer is the day on which the plague ended and the dying ceased, hence the cause for celebration. How is it, though, that Rabbi Akivah's students dishonored each other when he was the author of the most famous teaching, "Love your fellow as yourself?" Interestingly it was their very focus loving others as themselves that was their undoing. People's minds differ from the minds of their fellows, and therefore each of the 24,000 disciples of Rabbi Akiva had his own nuances of understanding. Had Rabbi Akiva's students loved each other less, this would not have been an issue. It was precisely because each disciple loved his fellows as he loved himself that he felt compelled to correct their erroneous thinking and behavior, leading to a disrespect of one another. Although this degree of judgment is only for those of the spiritual caliber of Rabbi Akiva's students, our sages chose to record this story. Obviously, there is something for us to learn from what happened to Rabbi Akiva's Curious Tales of the Talmud: Finding disciples. personal meaning in the Legends of our The lesson is twofold: We must learn to care enough for our fellow man not to indulge his errors and Sages will decode powerful insights accommodate his failings. This might be the easiest and most socially comfortable way to behave, but, rather about ourselves, our universe, and how than tolerance, it bespeaks an indifference toward his or her welfare. On the other hand, we must never allow our to overcome life's rugged moments from commitment to his betterment to lessen in the slightest our respect and esteem toward him, no matter how misguided some of the most fantastical legends and unresponsive he might be. you'll ever encounter. This may be paradoxical. However the ability to embrace this paradox is at the very heart of the Torah's commandment to "Love your fellow as yourself." For in regard to ourselves, it is a paradox with which we are quite Register Today! Visit www.MyJli.com comfortable. Every psychologically healthy person loves himself unconditionally and, at the same time, incessantly strives to improve himself. This paradox we must also cultivate in our relationship with others. To succumb to either compromise is to fail to love him as we love ourselves—a principle which Rabbi Akiva considered fundamental to G-d's blueprint for life and of which Hillel said: "This is the entire Torah; the rest is commentary."
