Great Literature Collection Aldrich Ames: Traitor Within CIA operative Aldrich Ames has, like his father, always been a company man. Although not always competent, he is chief of the Counter Intelligence Soviet Branch and has few friends within the Agency. On the verge of financial ruin due to, among other things, his wife Rosario's heavy spending, the hard-drinking and desperate Ames decides to sell secrets to the Russians. His first "job" has fatal consequences for ten Russians who worked for the CIA. Ames' boss, the Chief of Operations, who is friendly toward Ames, discovers that someone within the CIA is divulging high-level information. He appoints Jeanne Vertefeuille to head up the investigation. Jeanne recruits her own older staff, derisively dubbed the "over the hill gang". Poring through an abundance of records, case files and information proves to be an awesome task and their search goes on for eight years. After a year-long stint in Rome and now with Bush in the White House, Ames continues turning over information to the Russians for millions of dollars, re-routing deposits to Swiss banks and his wife's family in Colombia. Still an alcoholic, he buys a Jaguar and moves his family to an expensive home in a plush suburb. Ames soon realizes, however, that the investigation is closing in and gets very nervous when a Russian politico who could disclose Ames' duplicity defects to America. Ames gets lucky, his treason is not yet uncovered. Ames' own actions, however, begin to draw suspicion towards him, especially when he tries to conduct his own investigation to uncover the spy within the CIA. -
A Study on Scarlet O' Hara's Ambitions in Margaret Mitchell's Gone
Chapter 3 The Factors of Scarlett O’Hara’s Ambitions and Her Ways to Obtain Them I begin the analysis by revealing the factors of O’Hara’s two ambitions, namely the willingness to rebuild Tara and the desire to win Wilkes’ love. I divide this chapter into two main subchapters. The first subchapter is about the factors of the two ambitions that Scarlett O’Hara has, whereas the second subchapter explains how she tries to accomplish those ambitions. 3.1. The Factors of Scarlett O’Hara’s Ambitions The main female character in Gone with the Wind has two great ambitions; her desires to preserve the family plantation called Tara, and to win Ashley Wilkes’ love by supporting his family’s needs. Scarlett O’Hara herself confesses that “Every part of her, almost everything she had ever done, striven after, attained, belonged to Ashley, were done because she loved him. Ashley and Tara, she belonged to them” (Mitchell, 1936, p.826). I am convinced that there are many factors which stimulate O’Hara to get these two ambitions. Thus, I use the literary tools: the theories of characterization, conflict and setting to analyze the factors. 3.1.1. The Ambition to Preserve Tara Scarlett O’Hara’s ambition to preserve the family’s plantation is stimulated by many factors within her life. I divide the factors that incite Scarlett O’Hara’s ambitions into two parts, the factors found before the war and after. The factors before the war are the sense of belonging to her land, the Southern tradition, and Tara which becomes the source of income. -

Margaret Mitchell‘s Gone with the Wind was published in 1936 and Robert Hicks‘ The Widow of the South was published in 2005. These two novels are written nearly seventy years apart. The protagonists of these two Civil War novels are very different, but still it is worth taking a look at the difference in attitude that the two novelists have in regard to women and slavery in the seventy-year span between the two novels. It is interesting to take a closer look at the portrayal by the two authors of the kind of lives these women lived, and what similarities and differences can be seen in the protagonists as pertaining to their education and upbringing. Also, how the women‘s lives were affected by living in a society which condoned slave ownership. The Civil War brought about changes in the women‘s lives both during its course and in its aftermath. Not only were the lives of the women affected but that of the slaves as well. The authors, through their writing, depicted aspects of the institution of slavery, especially how the slave hierarchy worked and what made one slave ―better‖ than the next. -

The themes of the meeting are part of the significance of the location in which we are meeting. The purpose of these notes is to make our members and guests aware of the surroundings of the meeting. This year we are blessed with the city of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and in particular The Georgian Terrace Hotel. Our hotel is filled with significant history. Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, and Olivia de Haviland stayed in the hotel. Although Vivien Leigh and her lover, Lawrence Olivier, stayed elsewhere they joined the rest for the pre-Premiere party at the hotel. Our meeting will be deliberating whether the Permanent Things—Truth, Beauty, and Virtue—are in fact, permanent, or have they gone with the wind? SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT Finding the Subject and the Verb The subject in a sentence names the person or thing performing the action expressed in the predicate (= the verb, verbs, or verb phrases), which describes the action. An easy trick to find the verb(s) in a sentence is to change the tense in the sentence. The verb(s) will change if you do this, but nothing else will. Jean works at the grocery store. She stocks shelves, works the cash register, and helps the manager lock up at night. (present tense) Last year, Jean worked at the grocery store. She stocked shelves, worked the cash register, and helped the manager lock up at night. (past tense) To find the subject, you simply ask “who or what performs the action?” In the above example, who works at the store, stocks shelves, and helps the manager? Jean – so there is the subject. • In English, verbs take the same form for all persons with one exception: the third person singular in the present tense. For all subjects that can be replaced with he, she, or it, you need to add –s to the verb in the present tense. If the verb is “to be,” use the form is or was. Singular Plural I am poor. Tall Timbers Research Station As I review the past six Annual Tall Timbers Fire Ecology Conferences, the 77 very competent papers presented, representing a diversity of disciplines from a large segment of the globe and the many stimulating, inspiring and mind-searching dis cussions generated thereby, I am reminded of the following statement from Dobzhansky's Mankind Evolving (1962): Science is cumulative knowledge. This makes scientific theories relatively impermanent, especially during the epochs when knowl edge piles up something like geometric progression. Scientists should be conscious of the provisional and transient nature of their attainments. Any scientist worth his salt labors to bring about the obsolescence of his own work. Certainly our efforts have added to "cumulative knowledge" in "something like geometric progression." Many of our ideas have grown, changed and continue to evolve, and we all labor to bring about the obsolescence of our own work. Dobzhansky states additionally: Two rival trends vie constantly for influence in science-spe cialization and synthesis. The former usually predominates. Alexander Scriabin (1871-1915): Piano miniature as chronicle of his creative evolution; Complexity of interpretive approach and its implications. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2008, 86 pp., 30 musical examples, 3 tables, 1 figure, references, 70 titles. Scriabin’s piano miniatures are ideal for the study of evolution of his style, which underwent an extreme transformation. They present heavily concentrated idioms and structural procedures within concise form, therefore making it more accessible to grasp the quintessence of the composer’s thought. A plethora of studies often reviews isolated genres or periods of Scriabin’s legacy, making it impossible to reveal important general tendencies and inner relationships between his pieces. While expanding the boundaries of tonality, Scriabin completed the expansion and universalization of the piano miniature genre. Starting from his middle years the ‘poem’ characteristics can be found in nearly every piece. The key to this process lies in Scriabin’s compilation of certain symbolical musical gestures. Separation between technical means and poetic intention of Scriabin’s works as well as rejection of his metaphysical thought evolution result in serious interpretive implications.
