The Officer Installation and Awards Banquet began with a Corporate Communion at the 5:30 p.m. Mass at St. Mark on June 18. We had one of the largest turnouts for a Corporate Communion that I can remember and I am hoping that we can have similar results for future Communions. Fifteen (15) members of the Color Corps preceded the Council members into the sanctuary and the Mass was said by Fr. Hopka. As part of the Color Corps, it was very gratifying to see so many of my Brother Knights and their families in the procession. Thank you to all who attended. Following Mass, most of us gathered at the Southfork Hotel on Central for the Officer Installation and Awards Banquet. Thirteen (13) of the Color Corps participated in the installation (the other two were being installed as Council officers). Danny Kendall, our District Deputy, conducted the installation. Since none of the clergy from St. Mark was able to attend due to prior commitments, Jack Ayers, the Grand Knight of Council 13520 and a Master of Ceremonies at All Saints parish, functioned as the Chaplain. He did a great job! I had several comments on his prayers after the close of the banquet – all were highly positive. The District Warden was unable to attend so I asked Rudy Profaizer to fill his position. Rudy provided an almost flawless performance and I thank him for his efforts.

We also thank Adrian Denvir for making the arrangements for the room and the dinner with the Southfork Hotel and Jamie Scarbrough for purchasing the flowers for the Grand Knight’s and Deputy Grand Knight’s wives. Well done to all involved.

A separate article in the Mainsail lists the awards and their recipients.

After the distribution of awards, I presented a special name badge to each Past Grand Knight. This badge is gold with black lettering and the PGK emblem. Look for them at the next meeting. Each PGK will also receive a special “Past Grand Knight” jewel as soon as they arrive from the manufacturer.

I thank all who were part of my staff for the past two years for their assistance. I also thank all members of the Council for the trust and the confidence you showed in my leadership during my tenure. Without that, my term as Grand Knight would have been much more difficult. I truly enjoyed being Grand Knight and I look forward to being available, as a resource, to future Grand Knights as they come along.

There is one more person who needs my thanks – my wife, Carolyn. Without her undying support, my job would have been nearly impossible. Only the wife of a Past Grand Knight can understand the many hours of time expended on behalf of the Council. Not only did she give me her support, but she helped me by reviewing almost everything that I wrote to make sure that I didn’t get too far from the topic. Without her, I would have been lost. As the saying goes, behind every successful man is a wonderful and loving woman. Thank you, Carolyn.

I am sure that you will support your new officers with the same enthusiasm that you showed during the last two years and that the Council will continue in its highly effective manner.

Ron Schoof to Lead Council as GK, Greg Fisher Named Knight of the Year, Kuglins Honored as Family of the Year

In an evening full of pomp and ceremony as well as festivities and friendship, Ron Schoof took his oath of office to become the Grand Knight of Council 6065 for the 2011- 2012 fraternal year. Following the installation of the complete slate of officers for the Council, the awards dinner was held and Greg Fisher was named Knight of the Year while Fred and Karin Kuglin were cited as Family of the Year.

It was a great night indeed for the Knights of our Council as the Color Corps from Assembly 2266 started the evening off at the Corporate Communion by leading the procession into St. Mark's for the Mass presided over by Father Jack Hopka. Following the Mass, the setting switched to the Southfork Hotel for the annual Installation and Awards Banquet. It was then that outgoing Grand Knight Paul Krusac became PGK Paul as Ron Schoof was installed as the Grand Knight for the upcoming fraternal year.

The installation ceremony was conducted by District Deputy Danny Kendall and assisted by Rudy Profaizer, who stepped in to fill the Warden's position since the District Warden was unable to attend. In addition to GK Schoof, the following Brother Knights were administered their oaths of office:

Bill Butcher, Deputy Grand Knight; Mark Peacock, Chancellor; John Spencer, Advocate; David Wolf, Recorder, Israel DeLaRosa, Treasurer; Lloyd Hasley, Warden; John Patterson III, Inside Guard; and Chip Lindell, Frank McElligott, and Rick Ouellette, Outside Guards. Phil Reinkemeyer will be the Third-Year Trustee, Greg Fisher, 2nd-Year Trustee, and Paul Krusac, 1st-Year Trustee. Additionally, Dick Park will continue on as Financial Secretary.

The Brother Knights of Council 6065 thank these gentlemen for their willingness to lead and serve our Council.

Following the dinner (the "Banquet" part of the evening), the "Awards" portion started with the presentation of plaques to Brother Knights in the Council for their outstanding service. Leading off was a special Certificate of Appreciation award to Monica Nelson, who was cited by out-going GK Paul Krusac for her volunteer work at our monthly 2nd Thursday Prayer Service. Monica has played the piano at these services, adding significantly to the reverence. The Council and the Ladies Auxiliary joined in thanking Monica, who will be attending the University of North Texas in the Fall.

In the "major" award categories, the Rookie of the Year was presented to Alex Hernandez. Alex has served our Council with dedication and devotion, working on various projects while earning his major degrees and becoming a Fourth Degree Knight... As a first- year Knight, Alex was a regular at most of the Council meetings and activities and his "work" is visible in our monthly Mainsail as well as on our bulletin board and the TV monitors in the church, because Alex is our "official" Council photographer. In accepting this role, Alex "gave up" a lot of his free time to be at countless functions to take pictures and record our deeds for future Knights to enjoy.

Fred and Karin Kuglin were honored as Family of the Year for exceptional work for the good of the Council and the parish, above and beyond what is expected. From FishFryDays to Safe Environment training, Fred and Karin have taken active leadership roles. Fred has led many of the training sessions during the past year to insure that our Council is in compliance with the Bishop's directives. He is also actively involved in the St. Mark Stewardship Commission, serving as chairman. Karin is a charter member and officer in the Ladies Auxiliary. Both of them exemplify what it means to be an "active Catholic" family, serving their parish and community and we are proud that they are members of Council 6065!

Culminating the evening was the presentation of the Knight of the Year Award to Greg Fisher. Greg has been an integral part of our Council for the past 10 years, serving in a variety of officer and leadership positions. For the past three years, he was on the parish committee that oversaw the acquisition of the Legacy Bank Building as well as serving on the current committee that is managing the "conversion" of this building into functional space for the parish and, most importantly, the McGivney Hall portion that will become our Council's new home. Fisher was also cited for his work on many Council projects, both in supporting and leadership roles, as he has been the chairman of the "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" committee since its inception. Greg Fisher has been a credit to Council 6065 and we salute and honor him as our Knight of the Year!

Last but not least, this evening could not have happened without the tireless efforts of Adrian Denvir, who again served as chairman of the event. He was ably assisted by many Brother Knights in the Council and to them, also, we express our gratitude. The wives of incoming GK Schoof (Barbara) and PGK Krusac (Carolyn) also thank Jamie Scarbrough, who had the special duty of selecting the bouquets that were presented to each lady.

All in all, it was indeed a night of pomp and ceremony and friendship and devotion to our church and our community. The Council asks for your prayers for our newly elected leaders and we are confident that the future of Council 6065 is in good hands.

Business Meeting Decorum; Council 6065

Be On Time: If you have to arrive late, enter quietly, present card, take a seat, without distraction or conversation with guards and others.

Silence cell phone: Having a cell phone ring more than once or answering a cell phone during a meeting is discourteous and crosses the line of proper decorum.

Avoid side conversations: innuendo, humor and ridicule of presenters directly harm the meeting have no place in business meeting and will be singled out/identified by the GK.

Be recognized to speak: Stand and address the GK as instructed during 1st Degree ceremonials. The GK, as the presiding officer, is equivalent to the CEO, President or Chairman of the Board in business settings; thus warrants the same level of respect to speak and conduct business.

Listen attentively without interruption: Out of respect to others and the GK and to facilitate other members’ ability to hear his comments. If you can’t hear what is being said, raise your hand and, when recognized, ask for clarification of what you didn’t hear. Do NOT ask the Knight sitting next to you as you then interrupt not only his attention to the meeting but also the attention of several people sitting around you.

Be prepared: Reports and comments should be concise. Speak clearly in a voice to be heard by all facing the attendees. Avoid innuendo and humor. Provide clarification as needed. If no report, simply state “no report” and be seated.

90 Minute meeting goal: We have a busy agenda and endeavor to adjourn by 9:00pm.

Use Mainsail: for non-critical or non-time sensitive information or project reports. Recurring or on-going projects may be presented periodically, such as quarterly, in the interest of saving meeting time.

Clergy respect: Any time a Priest enters the chamber, the Guards are to gain the attention of all present by calling out “Clergy present” and all shall rise in respect and remain standing until instructed to be seated. If the Guard doesn’t observe the entrance of a priest, the first person who sees him shall make the announcement.

Call for prayers: “for a brother, ill or in distress” should be limited to family members and relatives, parishioners and others who may be known to fellow Knights. Details of medical conditions or circumstances should be general and concise.

Introduction of new projects: especially those requiring monetary or manpower resources should be introduced at a planning meeting in order to provide the officers with details and gain consensus prior to bringing it before the general membership.

Roberts Rules of Order are utilized to allow people (groups) to join together to accomplish common goals and enable debate and take action in a fair manner with the least amount of controversy, is based on “common sense” and logic and protects the rights of majority, minority, individuals and absentees.

An organization has the right to make it own rules which must be observed by all members. In cases of dispute, the rights of the organization prevail.

The Presiding officer, Chairman, President, or in our case, Grand Knight,  Maintains order so the organization can do its work in a fair, expedient and impartial manner  Determines the degree of formality  Starts on time, maintains flow of the meeting, manages timely adjournment  Explains, clarifies and leads  Assigns the floor by calling on individuals who wish to speak. While a member is speaking, no other member may interrupt or call out without being “Out of Order.” Note: Private discussions between members are disruptive and are ALWAYS “Out of Order.”  May interrupt a discussion to help frame or clarify a motion

The Officers and Trustees have determined it is not necessary nor does it warrant the use of members’ time to correct typos, punctuation or spelling including names that do not materially impact the accurate recording of transactions or Council business for the record.

As directed by the Grand Knight, the Recorder shall email the minutes shortly after each meeting to the Officers in order for them to “preview and correct” the minutes for content and accuracy. All changes will be incorporated into the formal minutes which will then be emailed to all members about one week prior to the next business meeting. Printed copies of the minutes will no longer be available at the business meeting.

Per Roberts Rules of Order, if no corrections to the minutes, the GK may deem them approved as read or presented, with no vote or motion required.

A presenter may amend or withdraw a motion prior to vote. The permission of the “seconder” is not needed to withdraw the motion. Withdrawn motions do not appear in the minutes. The GK may declare a motion “Out of Order” if it is deemed to be “game- playing” or disruptive to a legitimate motion.

Breakfast with the Queen

The "Executive Officers" of Council 6065 met once a month, usually on a Monday or Tuesday before the first Thursday meeting, to discuss Council business and plan the agenda for that month's meeting. The breakfast "rotation location" varied during the course of the past two years, but the overwhelming favorite was Poor Richard's Cafe. Here seated (l- r) and ready to "indulge" themselves are Chancellor Pete Maurer, Grand Knight Paul Krusac, and Deputy Grand Knight Ron Schoof. As you can see, "da boys" ate heartily.

Now, having cleaned their plates (the bowl of gravy on Pete's plate was not "his", it was brought by mistake since Pete does not care for gravy on his pancakes), our terrific trio is joined by Alice Benavidez, who was their waitress and friend for more than a dozen of the breakfast meals/meetings. Thanks, Alice, for taking such good care of us and cleaning up after our occasional spills.

PGKs To Receive Badges and Medallions To Honor Their Past Service to Our Council

Outgoing Grand Knight Paul Krusac will be presenting badges and medallions to the Past Grand Knights (PGK's) of our Council at upcoming business meetings to recognize their service. He decided to do this to allow the PGK's to be recognized by newer members with these distinctive symbols of their service. The gold-colored badge will identify the years that the Brother Knight served Council 6065 as GK. The badge and medallion are shown below.

New Leader of the Ukrainian Catholic Church (Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk)

Chuck Neubecker of our Council has been doing volunteer work in Ukraine for the past 10 years. One of the first priests he met there was Fr. Sviatoslav Shevchuk, who was then the Vice Rector of Holy Spirit seminary in Lviv, Ukraine. Council 6065 has been supporting the education of these seminarians at the nearby Ukrainian Catholic University for 10 years and has provided around $10,000 for that effort.

Subsequently in succession Fr. Shevchuk became the Rector of the seminary, Chancellor of the Lviv Archdiocese, Auxiliary Bishop of Ukrainian Catholics in Argentina, Ukrainian Catholic Bishop of Argentina, and now leader of over 4 million Ukrainian Catholics worldwide through his position as the Major Archbishop of Kiev, Ukraine.

In addition to the financial support of the Council, Chuck dealt with Fr./Bishop Shevchuk when he was Chancellor and Bishop of Argentina on various management consulting projects.

Ukrainian Church Elects Young New Leader

Plans to continue quest for a patriarchate

A 40-year-old bishop serving in Argentina has been elected to lead the Ukrainian Catholic Church, the largest Eastern Church in communion with the Holy See.

Bishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the apostolic administrator of the Eparchy of the Protection of the Blessed Mary in Buenos Aires, was elected by the 40 bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Synod on March 23. The results of the election were not announced to the public until Pope Benedict confirmed the choice on March 25.

The Ukrainian prelate succeeds Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, who retired in February, citing his failing health, after 10 years as the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. (Cardinal Husar, who is 78, is losing his eyesight.) During his tenure Cardinal Husar moved the headquarters of the Ukrainian Church from Lviv to Kiev.

Born in 1970, Archbishop Shevchuk was ordained as a priest in Lviv in 1994. After graduate studies in theology he taught at the Lviv seminary, and served as personal secretary to Cardinal Husar. In 2009 he became an auxiliary bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic eparchy in Argentina, and was appointed as apostolic administrator when the previous bishop retired.

The election of Bishop Shevchuk broke a temporary deadlock in the Synod voting. Following the rules for such elections, after 12 inconclusive ballots the bishops narrowed their selections to the two prelates who had been named most frequently in the last round of voting. Shortly thereafter, the winning candidate received the necessary two-thirds majority.

One of the youngest Catholic bishops in the world, the new major archbishop becomes an enormously influential figure in Ukraine and on the ecumenical scene. The Ukrainian Catholic Church, with more than four million faithful, is by far the largest of the Byzantine- rite Catholic Churches. Having suffered decades of brutal suppression under the Soviet regime, the Ukrainian Catholic Church emerged with remarkable vigor after the fall of Communism. Ukrainian Catholics have pressed the Vatican for recognition of a Ukrainian patriarchate. But the Russian Orthodox Church, which claims Ukraine as its own “canonical territory,” has adamantly opposed that idea, and views the activities of the Ukrainian Catholic Church as an impediment to ecumenical progress.

The new leader of the Ukrainian Catholic Church was enthroned in a solemn ceremony in Kiev on March 27. Representatives of the two largest rival Orthodox groups in Ukraine attended the enthronement ceremony in a welcome gesture of ecumenical good will. (Following Ukraine’s independence, the leader of the Moscow-backed Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Filaret, broke with the Russian Orthodox Church to form an independent Kiev patriarchate. Moscow has never recognized that body, instead backing the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.)

Two days after his enthronement, Archbishop Shevchuk said he would ask Pope Benedict to raise the Eastern Catholic Church to the dignity of a patriarchate. “Today I’m departing with my bishops and all of the metropolitans of our Church to Rome, because it’s our duty to

Page 15 www.kofc6065.org Mainsail, the Official Newsletter of the Santa Maria Council #6065 July 2011 make a courtesy visit to the Holy Father,” said Archbishop Shevchuk. “We’re really going to tell of how our Church is developing and that each developing Church [becomes] a patriarchate, because a patriarchate is a period in the completion of the development of a Church.” However the new leader of the Byzantine Catholic community in Ukraine—who is already routinely addressed by his followers as the patriarch—made it clear that the recognition of a Ukrainian patriarchate is a decision that should be left to the Pope, and he did not plan to press the issue.

Council’s Family Picnic To Be Held July 9th

Bring the kids, bring the in-laws, the cousins, grandkids and even one of your kid's best friends if you like..... just don't miss this annual fun-filled event sponsored by Council 6065. You can be sure it will be a great way to spend a HOT afternoon in July, with somebody else providing the pool, games, and most of the food and drinks!

That's the word from committee chairman Dale Hearst, who released the final plans for the annual "after the Fourth of July Family Picnic". Here are the details:

First, the location is EASY to find.... COUNTRY PLACE COMMUNITY GROUNDS, which is located at 3600 Country Place Drive in Plano, 75023. For those of you with computers (and who doesn't nowadays?), just put the address above into either Google or Mapquest and you will find exactly where it is, with step-by-step, turn-by-turn directions how to get there from your own house... how EASY can that be???

Second, the date and time: Saturday, July 9th, starting at 12:00 noon and lasting until 6:00 p.m. or until everyone is stuffed, tired, and just ready to go home.

Third, what do YOU have to do to get involved with this wonderful event? This is easier than the Staples' EASY Button.... just sign up at the July business meeting, agree to bring some sort of side dish, dessert, snacks, whatever! (And if you can't do that, you are still invited.... because we always have more than enough!)

Fourth, what will you get at this wonderful "day of fun in the sun"? Country Place has a LARGE pool for swimming and keeping cool. Then there is their "air-conditioned" club house.... yep... FREE air conditioning, not your kids running up your electric bill! Then there are games galore.... volleyball, horseshoes, and/or whatever games you might decide to bring along..... like the "Bocce" ball game that one of the Brother Knights brought last year. And the "game area" is pretty well shaded, so you won't burn too much.. but YOU are responsible for bring your own sun screen, after all, you are a responsible adult!

The Council will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, soft drinks, water, and beer.... and "skillful grill masters" to do the cooking, so you can relax in the pool, sip a cold one or two, and just enjoy the camaraderie that will abound.

Fifth and final.... what do you have to do to enjoy this day? Simple, just sign up.... and if you can not make the meeting, contact Dale by email or by phone to let him know you are coming, how many "friends and family" are joining you, and if you are able to comply the "third" item, what will you bring. And by the way, how many of you noticed that the third and the fifth items are pretty much the same??? EH, I wanted to repeat it for emphasis.... because this event is not fun without you. Even if the "Knight" in your life can't make it, his family is welcome to come and a phone call to one of his Brother Knights will insure that you (Mrs. Knight) and your family will be there and then you can all come home and boast about the fun YOU had that HE missed. Please make all final arrangements with Dale by July 7th so he can buy enough "provisions" to feed and hydrate all of us!!!

Newly Elected Officers

At their June 3rd meeting, the Ladies Auxiliary elected their new officers. They were installed at the annual Knights of Columbus Installation Dinner on June 18. Congratulations are in order for the following officers:

Cindy Cosgrove was re-elected for a second term as President. As a relative new member in 2010, she stepped in with enthusiasm and brought new ideas and projects with her. We welcome her continued leadership and look forward to another productive year.

Cindy Cosgrove was installed as the President of the Ladies Auxiliary during the ceremonies to install Council 6065's new officers. Cindy was re-elected for a second term. The Brother Knights of Council 6065 salute and thank her and officers and the entire Ladies Auxiliary for their help and support of our activities and we congratulate them for the many fine endeavors they undertook in the past fraternal year.

Alice Alt will be our new Vice President. She has served on the original Steering Committee, is the Auxiliary Historian and been very successful in her role as Membership Chairman. Through her recruitment efforts, we have grown steadily, adding new members throughout the year.

Barbara Schoof is Treasurer. She was also an original Steering Committee member, as well as Secretary/Treasurer. The Auxiliary will continue to rely on her strong administrative abilities in our financial endeavors.

Nancy Schumacher has been elected to the position of Secretary. An accurate written record of all Auxiliary meetings is important for future planning as well as a useful reference to the past. Nancy joined the Auxiliary just last Fall and comes to us with over 20 years of experience in this area.

Judy Ahr (3 year), Bea Preboy (2 year) and Karin Kuglin (1 year) have been elected to our first Board of Trustees. As participants in the Auxiliary from its’ original founding, they bring multiple talents and experience to lend future guidance to the Ladies Auxiliary.

Dorothy Dietz - Ladies Auxiliary Auxilian Award

The Executive Board of the Ladies Auxiliary selected Dorothy Dietz to receive its first annual Auxilian Award and presented it to her at the Knights of Columbus Installation Dinner on June 18.

Dorothy Dietz has been a member of the Ladies Auxiliary since its inception in November, 2008. She volunteered to be on the Steering Committee and was an engaged participant in helping to build a strong and vibrant Auxiliary.

Along with her position on the Steering Committee, she has been our Sunshine- Benevolence Chairwoman from the beginning. She is the epitome of caring and empathy for all the Auxiliary’s individuals in times of joy and need. Many a member would agree that “Sunshine” should be her middle name.

Dorothy has been active on our Nominating Committee and helps out on a regular basis with our joint Parish Prayer Service with the Knights. It’s not unusual to see her often at St. Mark when she’s not busy traveling and visiting her children and family located throughout the United States. She’s also very involved with the Parish Choir, RCIA and Rosary Group.

Dietz received the first Auxilian Award, presented by the Ladies Auxiliary, for her outstanding work for the organization. See details in the accompanying story.
