Since IACA established the Oratory to Our Lady of Good Health, Vailankanni at the National Shrine in 1997, it has been organizing devotional activities including the Pilgrimage, every year. IACA’s Annual Pilgrimage is a major event that brings together a large number of Catholics from Indian subcontinent, living in the United States. This is also a unique occasion to showcase the diverse faith traditions and practices that have been in existence in South Asia for many centuries. This year’s Pilgrimage Mass will be celebrated in Syro Malabar Rite, one of the largest Eastern Rite Catholic Churches, originated in Kerala, India. The Pilgrimage Mass will be celebrated by the Major Archbishop and Head of Syro Malabar Catholic Church, His Eminence George Cardinal Alencherry as the main celebrant. Cardinal Alencherry will be joined by His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington and His Excellency Mar Jacob Angadiath, Bishop of St. Thomas Syro IACAMalabar Christmas Diocese of Chicago and many priests, to con-celebrate the Pilgrimage Mass. Cardinal Wuerl will also preachCelebrations Homily at the Mass. Pilgrimage will begin at 1:00 pm. IACA invites all to join this celebration. & Syro Malabar Church in the US: Catholic Church is a coAnnualmmunion General of aBody number of Churches including the Latin Rite and 21 Eastern Rite Churches. Syro-Malabar Church, believedMeeting to be established in Kerala in 52 AD by St. Thomas the Apostle, is one of the largest among the Catholic Churches of Eastern Rites. Syro-Malabar Church, also called the Church of St. Thomas Christians, grew and remained within the geographical December 8, 2012 boundaries of Kerala for many centuries. In the modern times, as people began to migrate to different parts of (Place will be announced later) India as well as the world, Syro Malabar Catholics also spread out to different parts of the world. In 2001, Pope John Paul II established a new Diocese in Chicago, for PleaseSyro Malabar mark your Catholics calendar in the US. Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath was appointed the first Bishop of the new St. Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago in the same year. St. Thomas Syro Malabar Church has now about 60 different Parishes and Missions spread all over the United Stated and Canada, under its jurisdiction. Page 2 .

He studied and received a master's degree in chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, but later decided to become a Jesuit priest and studied at the Jesuit seminary of Villa Devoto. He studied liberal arts in Santiago, Chile, and in 1960 earned a degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of Buenos Aires. Between 1964 and 1965 he was a teacher of literature and psychology at Inmaculada High School in the province of Santa Fe, and in 1966 he taught the same courses at the prestigious Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. In 1967, he returned to his theological studies and was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969. After his perpetual profession as a Jesuit in 1973, he became master of novices at the Seminary of Villa Barilari in San Miguel. Later that same year, he was elected superior of the Jesuit province of Argentina and Uruguay. In 1980, he returned to San Miguel as a teacher at the Jesuit school, a job rarely taken by a former provincial superior.

In simplistic terms, the Ukrainian Catholic Church (also known as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church) is a part of the Catholic Church that observes the same traditions as does Eastern Orthodoxy. It is, however, very much part of the Catholic Church. The head of the Universal Catholic Church, and hence the Ukrainian Catholic Church, is Pope Francis. The Ukrainian Catholic Church world-wide is governed internally by the Synod of Ukrainian Catholic Bishops; its highest ranking cleric is Patriarch (Major Archbishop) Sviatoslav Shevchuk.

It was my wish to invite you here to Rome for fraternal sharing, also with the superiors of the competent dicasteries of the Roman Curia. I thank you for accepting the invitation; it is good to see you. Ukraine has for some time been experiencing a difficult and delicate situation, for more than five years wounded by a conflict that many describe as “hybrid”, composed as it is of acts of war in which those responsible camouflage themselves; a conflict where the weakest and the smallest pay the highest price; a conflict aggravated by propagandist falsifications and manipulations of various types, also in the attempt to involve the religious aspect. I hold you in my heart and I pray for you, dear Ukrainian brothers. And I confide to you that at times I do so with prayers that I remember and that I learned from Bishop Stepan Czmil, then a Salesian priest; he taught me them when I was twelve years old, in 1949, and I learned from him to serve the Divine Liturgy three times a week. I thank you for your fidelity to the Lord and to Peter’s Successor, which has often cost dearly throughout history, and I beg the Lord to accompany the actions of all those with political responsibility to search not the so-called partisan good, which in the end is always an interest at someone else’s expenses, but the common good, peace.

This cur- rent research is based on new ecclesiological developments within this Church, which has recently been raised to the rank of a major archiepiscopal Church sui iuris according to Ca- tholic canonical norms. Madey traces the history of those developments in the canonical and conciliar literature, with special but not exclusive attention to the developments in the 20th century, chiefly in Cleri Sanctitati of Pope Pius XII; Orientalium Ecclesiarum of the Second Vatican Council; and the 1990 Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. The author differentiates ecclesial structures and canonical norms in Oriental Churches governed by a patriarch, major arch- bishop, catholicos, or maphrian.     India- Holy See Relations Diplomatic relations between India and the Holy See were established soon after India’s independence. India’s Ambassador in Berne, Switzerland, has traditionally been accredited to the Holy See which maintains a Nunciature (Embassy) in New Delhi, presently headed by a Nuncio (Ambassador). India has the second largest Catholic population in Asia including those from Kerala dating from Apostolic times. With a shortage of priests and nuns from developed countries, a large number of Indians have joined various Roman Catholic Orders and a number of them have started occupying high positions within the Catholic Church institutions including those in Rome. India and Indians have a positive image in the Catholic community. Although the strength of the Christian (and hence the Catholic) community forms only a small proportion of India’s population, the Holy See has always acknowledged the importance of India, both in global and Asian terms. There have been three Papal visits to India so far. The first Pope to visit India was Pope Paul IV, who visited Mumbai in 1964 to attend the International Eucharistic Congress. Pope John Paul II visited India in February 1986 and November 1999. He participated in the concluding session of Synod of Bishops of Asia at which he signed and released post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation. HH Pope Francis, the 76-year-old Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina was elected as Supreme Pontiff on 13th March 2013. H.E. Archbishop Parolin was inaugurated as the new Secretary of State of the Holy See in place of H.E. Bertone. Several Indian dignitaries have, from time to time, called on the Pope in the Vatican.

THOMAS THE APOSTLE St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago The faith confession of St. Thomas the Apostle, “My Lord and My God”, stands in history as the most profound confession on Jesus’ true identity. ‘Lord’ and ‘God’ are the equivalent words for the Greek terms ‘Kyrios’ and ‘Theos’ respectively used to denote the Hebrew words ‘Yahweh’ and ‘Elohim’, two expressions used to address the Almighty One. I am sure that Anthony Kohlmann, S.J., the founder and first rector of Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral, would be pleased that Archbishop Hughes’ gift bore—and continues to bear—witness to the mutual love and respect that has always existed between the Society of Jesus and the Church of New York.
