We are reminded during Mthis month to reflect on the gift of life and understand how great it is. “Human life in any condition is a masterpiece of God’s creation”, says Sean Cardinal O’Malley, the chairman of the Commission on Pro-Life of USCCB. “You are “You are precious in my eyes and honored and I love you”, says the Lord (Is 43,4). Each and every one of us is precious in precious for the Lord, honored and loved by Him. my eyes and What more do we need in our life? honored and How many lives are lost through the inhuman atrocities inflicted by human beings! I love you” This can be prevented. Natural disasters are beyond our control. Human massacre in the name of religion-God is a contradiction in itself since God is love and life. We are here to defend life and protect our fellow beings. We need to pray and work to protect life in any stage whether born or unborn. Abortion and euthanasia are serious sins of our time. Senior citizens and disabled people are to be respected and treated decently. Let us pray and work together to protect life in all its phases. May the Lord, the source of life, may strengthen us to defend life in all its forms. Mar Jacob Angadiath Bishop 5 St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago Dear Friends in Jesus Christ, am delighted to write few words in our Message Diocesan Bulletin this month. This issue of the bulletin comes to you after the appointment I and my Episcopal ordination as the Auxiliary Bishop of St Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese, Chicago. The days gone were very hectic and stressful but filled with excitement and spiritually empowering. I could see many helping hands worked very hard to make this event of my Episcopal Ordination an event of big faith celebrations in our Diocese. Pastors of our parishes and missions really helped to make aware the value and importance of leadership in the church and also cooperated wholeheartedly to raise enough financial support for this event. This was an event that showed great amount of unity and mutual support. I humbly bow my head before the Lord for giving this event for our Diocese. The month of October is a special month spiritually. We remember few of our favorite Saints in this month. St. Theresa of Jesus, Holy Angels, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Teresa of Avila are few of them. Also we dedicate whole month to recite Rosary prayer in a special way and assure the protection of Mother Mary for Church, families and priests of course. Pope Francis is fascinating the World by his graceful presence today. What is special about Pope Francis that he brings a face of compassion to the whole world. The present day world is eagerly looking for this compassion and understanding. It is in this situation more than two hundred Bishops and Archbishops have assembled in Rome to discuss on the theme of Family which is a vital element of our church. Isn’t the words of Pope remind us or challenge us something special from us. He told: “I see clearly the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. I see the church as a field hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugar! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else. Heal the wounds… And you have to start from the ground up… “ Once again thanking you all and looking forward to see in your parishes, Mar Joy Alappatt Aux. • St Chavara and the Mystic St Euphrasia
Vol. 11, 2 (2015) Pages: 237-254 ST CHAVARA AND THE MYSTIC ST EUPHRASIA Thomas Kadankavil CMI Abstract: The author gives an overview of the lives of the twin Carmelite saints Chavara and Euphrasia and their mysticism. After a short life sketch of Euphrasia in the backdrop of the church in shambles, the author moves on to sketch the life of Euphrasia in the convent. She is presented both as a devotee and a disciple of Chavara. Although he did not directly give any instruction for the spiritual formation of Euphrasia, yet, she was transformed in the school of Chavara, in which she rose to the heights of mystical experiences including diabolic experiences and intense temptations. The author then slides into the story of Chavara and his relationship with Leopold, the influence St Teresa of Avila had on Chavara. The many mystical experiences of Euphrasia had its roots in Chavara who was influenced by Teresa of Avila. The author claims that contemplation was a common goal of both the saints. However, as both of them followed two different lifestyles, so they are seen as models of two Carmelite spiritual streams – contemplation and action and contemplation and silence. While Chavara is a paradigm of the stream of contemplation and action, Euphrasia naturally is a representative of those who follow the path of contemplation and silence. Keywords: Carmelites, Church, Kerala, society, Bishops, vicariates, history, disciple, devotee, mysticism, prayer, contemplation, temptation, diabolic, convent, bride. 1. Historical Background Child Rose (later Sr Euphrasia CMC) was born on 17 October 1877 seven years after the death of Chavara (3 January 1871) at Kattoor, a village in the Vicariate of Varapuzha as the eldest daughter of Eluvathingal Anthony-Kunjetty of a financially well to do Syrian Christian family.

  • Diocesan Bulletin
Diocesan Bulletin - January, 2015 Mar Jacob Angadiath with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Canonization of Saint Chavara Kuriakose & Saint Euphrasia The faith confession of St. Thomas the Apostle, “My Lord and My God”, stands in the history as the most profound confession on Jesus’ true identity. ‘Lord’ and ‘God’ are the equivalent words for the Greek terms ‘Kyrios’ and ‘Theos’ respectively used to denote the Hebrew words ‘Yahweh’ and ‘Elohim’, two expressions used to address the Almighty One. Making use of these words to the Resurrected Lord, Thomas equates Jesus to the Absolute Deity. He connects the Old Testament and New Testament understanding of God. St. Thomas Syro-Malabar St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, by Catholic Diocese of Chicago living and experiencing the faith confession of her patron through the celebration of her liturgy, aims at the deepening of the identity and heritage of Syro-Malabar Church in the United States of America. • Columbus Bishop Places Priest on Administrative Leave
Catholic Diocese of Columbus Communications Office PHONE 6142412555 E-MAIL [email protected] DATE: September 13, 2019 RELEASE: IMMEDIATE COLUMBUS BISHOP PLACES PRIEST ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE COLUMBUS – As part of a diocesan investigation of an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor, the Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Columbus, has placed diocesan priest Father Kevin F. Lutz, 69, on administrative leave, effective September 11, 2019. This action and announcement are made in accordance with the Catholic Church’s Charter and Norms for the Protection of Children and Young People and the Diocese’s published Policies for Prevention of Sexual Abuse of Minors and Response to Allegations Thereof. Father Lutz recently announced his retirement from priestly ministry at St. Mary Parish, Columbus, which was effective September 8, 2019. The next day, September 9, an accusation of sexual abuse of a minor, allegedly occurring during Father Lutz’s tenure at St. Christopher Parish, Columbus, from 1983-1986, was reported to the Diocesan Chancery office. The same day, Diocesan officials had the allegation reported to Columbus Police and notified Father Lutz of the allegation. On September 11, the details of the allegation were reviewed with Father Lutz, he was formally placed on leave, and he was advised about the steps the Church would follow as a result of the allegation. As was explained to Father Lutz, his placement on administrative leave was not an indication that the Diocese had determined that the allegation is credible. Rather, the preliminary investigation into the allegation has just begun. -MORE- COLUMBUS BISHOP PLACES – 2 of 3 A meeting of the Diocesan Board of Review for the Protection of Children will be convened in the near future to assess the results of the preliminary investigation and advise the Bishop as to whether or not it appears to be credible.
