Bidding Farewell to Archbishop and Metropolitan-Emeritus Stephen Sulyk (1924-2020) Bidding Farewell to Archbishop and Metropolitan-Emeritus Stephen Sulyk (1924-2020) With natural sadness but also with Paschal hope the Philadelphia Archeparchy bids farewell to Metropolitan-Emeritus Stephen Sulyk. As a priest and bishop,he was a dedicated minister of the Lord in the Archeparchy for 65 years since his priestly ordination in 1955. We thank God for his life and raise prayers of gratitude for his service. The coronavirus pandemic, to which evidently the Archbishop succumbed at the age of 95, does not allow us to come together for the funeral. Thus, we are called to unite in prayer and spirit from our homes. When the danger for our clergy and faithful passes we will celebrate a requiem in which all can participate. In the name of our deceased Metropolitan, I thank all the bishops, clergy, religious, and faithful that worked with him over the many decades of his service in America. He is grateful to all of you, as he himself expressed during the joyful, warm celebration of his 95th birthday in October held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He appreciated the collegiality shown by Roman Catholic bishops, clergy and communities, as well as the fellowship shared with our Orthodox brothers and sisters. He valued the decades of cooperation with various community organizations. We are most grateful for the services and kindnesses rendered to the Metropolitan by Ukrainian and Roman Catholic chaplains, religious, and laypersons during the two decades of his retirement. Especially I would like to thank Carol and Michael Nunno for the genuine friendship and singular service that you offered to Archbishop Stephen.

  • Catholic and Anti-Catholic Traditions in Russia*
Religion, State & Society, Vol. 28, No. 1,2000 Catholic and Anti-Catholic Traditions in Russia* SERGEI FILATOV & L YUDMILA VORONTSOVA After an absence of almost 50 years, Catholicism once more exists on Russian soil. Despite the religious diversity of our society and the religious eclecticism of the majority of our contemporaries, no other religious confession appears to arouse such passionate emotions and often indeed outright hostility. Anti-Catholic intolerance cannot simply be explained in the context of a general intolerance of believers of other faiths. Russia now has Muslims, Buddhists and even Protestants, who have encountered difficulties mainly due to their missionary activity. It would seem that the phenomenon of Russian Catholicism today can be explained only if we understand the nature of the problem: what is Catholicism in the context of Russian spiritual and political culture and what does conversion to Catholicism mean to a Russian? In early years Russia was open to both Greek and Roman missionaries. At the end of the tenth century the adoption of one particular faith was not made on the basis of its dogma: the differences between Western and Eastern Christianity were simply beyond the understanding of the unsophisticated population of Ancient Rus', unversed as it was in questions of theology. The new faith was received on the basis of its cultural traditions and the attractiveness of its ceremonies. It was not so much the teaching of this faith which attracted, rather the appeal and 'beauty' of the ritual: indeed the cultural component was the determining factor in the attitude of the Russian people towards Catholicism.

The origins of the Ukrainian Catholic Church lie in the time when much of present-day Ukraine formed part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was then, in 1596, that for a variety of reasons, many of the Orthodox bishops of the region decided to accept communion with Rome.(1) After almost four hundred years the resulting Union of Brest remains a contentious subject.(2) The new "Uniate" Church formally recognized the Pope as Head of the Church, but maintained its traditional Byzantine or eastern rite, calendar, its right to ordain married men as priests, and its right to elect its own bishops.

REMARKS OF HIS EXCELLENCY ARCHBISHOP CHRISTOPHE PIERRE APOSTOLIC NUNCIO TO THE UNITED STATES JUBILEE CELEBRATION FOR BISHOP NICHOLAS SAMRA BISHOP OF THE MELKITE EPARCHY OF NEWTON ANNUNCIATION MELKITE CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL HALL, WEST ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2019 My Dear Friends in Christ, As the Apostolic Nuncio, the personal representative of Pope Francis to the United States, I greet you in the name of the Holy Father. I wish to acknowledge the presence of His Beatitude Patriarch Joseph Absi, as well as the many other prelates and dignitaries here this evening. I thank the Right Reverend Philip Raczka, Cathedral Rector and Vicar General, for his hospitality. In a special way, I greet my brother, Bishop Nicholas Samra, and express to him the spiritual closeness, paternal affection, and heartfelt congratulations on this occasion in your life and priestly ministry – the celebration of thirty years of episcopal ministry and fifty years of priestly service! Your Excellency, fifty years ago, you were ordained as a priest and anointed with the oil of gladness, committing yourself wholeheartedly to the service of the People of God, promising to offer sacrifice to God for them. Twenty years later, you received the fullness of Holy Orders, deepening your commitment to pasture Christ’s sheep. You certainly have taken that commitment seriously. Indeed, as priests and bishops, our whole life is an oblation to God and a constant striving to imitate Christ, the Good Shepherd. Pope Francis has said: “The Heart of the Good Shepherd is not only the Heart that shows us mercy, but it is itself mercy.
