As a result of a taxonomical revision of Oligocene and Miocene scapho- pods ofthe North Sea Basin observations on stratigraphical distribution well of as as on evolutionary lineages species are presented. There are from the the two important lineages reaching Latdorfian, resp. Rupelian, to the Vierlandian (Fissidentalium novaki-lineage and Antalis Miocene geminata-lineage) and one (Reinbekian to Syltian) lineage (based on Fissidentalium “badense” auct.). Assemblages of scaphopod species characterize different facies in the Rupelian, but stratigraphical units in the Hemmoorian. Most previous assumptions as to identity of species and their development in the North Sea Basin appeared to be incorrect. Dr R. Door middel van een kritische taxonomische herziening van de oligocene en miocene Scapho- het Noordzeebekken werd de toe te poda van mogelijkheid geschapen Scaphopoda passen voor een stratigrafische ouderdomsbepaling. Zowel evolutiereeksen als kenmerkende soortenassociaties kunnen nu voor stratigrafische doeleinden worden gebruikt. Van belang zijn vooral drie ontwikke- nl. (Reinbek tot Sylt). vooral verschillende niveau’s Karakteristieke soortengezelschappen zijn kenmerkend voor van Hemmoor-ouderdom. Charakteristische Artenassoziationen kennzeichnen vor allem verschiedene Niveaus innerhalb der Hemmoor-Stufe. Auch in der Rupelstufe gibt es spezielle Artengesellschaften, die hier allerdings mehr anderen auf bestimmte Faziesbereiche beschränkt sind. Beziehungen zu Tertiärbecken bestehen während des Hemmooriums der nur zum Burdigal Aquitaine. Direkte Beziehungen zum Miozän der Paratethys lassen sich entgegen bisherigen Annahmen mit Scaphopoden nicht nachweisen. The hoard contained pendants and beads made of shells of marine clam Spondylus gaederopus and scaphopod Antalis vulgaris. The paper analyses the context and use wear of the objects in the hoard. The results form a basis for: the reconstruction of the role of some of the items and the ways in which they were worn; the premise that the dynam- ics and mechanisms of acquisition of ornaments made of the two Mediterranean mollusc species could have differed; and the identification of a cross-cultural pattern of deposition of ornament hoards. The erosive forces of the Colorado River and feeder streams took millions of years to carve more than 290 million years of Paleozoic Era rocks. These exposures of Paleozoic Era sediments constitute 85% of the almost 5,000 km2 (1,903 mi2) of the Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) and reveal important chronologic information on marine paleoecologies of the past. This expanse of both spatial and temporal coverage is unrivaled anywhere else on our planet. While many visitors stand on the rim and peer down into the abyss of the carved canyon depths, few realize that they are also staring at the history of life from almost 520 million years ago (Ma) where the Paleozoic rocks cover the great unconformity (Karlstrom et al. 2018) to 270 Ma at the top (Sorauf and Billingsley 1991). (Dentaliidae).— This paper reports on eight scaphopod species found at 128 sampling stations near the coast of Valencia (Spain) during the campaigns of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/CE) 2005, 2006 and 2008. Samples depos- ited in several Valencian institutions and private collections are also described. The identified species belong to four families: Dentaliidae (Antalis dentalis, A. inaequicostata, A. novemcostata, A. vulgaris, and A. caprottii n. sp., a new species described from material found on the coasts of the province of Castellón), Fustiariidae (Fustiaria rubescens), Entalinidae (Entalina tetragona) and Gadilidae (Dischides politus). We describe the characteristics and conchiological variations for each species and give geographic distribution maps on the Valencian coast for each species. INCISED DENTALIUM SHELL BEADS IN THE PLATEAU CULTURE AREA Roderick Sprague Whole dentalium and segments of dentalium shell have been used Her study of the archaeological occurrence of marine-shell as beads in the Northwest Coast and interior Plateau culture areas beads in the Fort Rock Basin within the Oregon portion of both prehistorically and ethnographically. Incised whole shells, the Great Basin revealed almost 200 shell beads of which and no more than five known examples of incised segments, have over half were olivella but only four were dentalium been recovered from the Plateau, limited to archaeological contexts. (Largaespada 2006: 19). None of the dentalium was incised. Bambach, Chairman Department of Geological Sciences, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (ABSTRACT) The fossiliferous Yorktown Formation (Pliocene) of Virginia was used as a natural laboratory for testing predictions of ecological and evolutionary theories. Specifically, coordinated stasis and ecological locking models have testable elements that can be analyzed using data from the Yorktown Formation. The ecological locking model requires that species within an ecosystem have strong interactions in order to stabilize morphologies of multiple lineages over millions of years. Species intereactions that are strong enough to do this should also be strong enough to be a major ordering force on the composition of paleocommunities. Single and replicate samples were taken from 30 cm stratigraphic intervals within the Rushmere and Morgart's Beach Members at several localities. A total of 142 samples were collected from 5 localites, which yielded 29,000 specimens belonging to 140 species of bivalves, gastropods, and other taxonomic groups. Principle components analysis, ANOVA, MANOVA, and other analyses were used to test the occurence and recurrence of local paleocommunities, paleocommunities, and paleocommunity types.

After introductory remarks on the solitary coral genera Heterocyathus and Heteropsammia, commonly known to be symbiotic with a sipunculan inhabiting a gastropod shell, Heterocyathus japonicus is redescribed in detail. It occurs from Taiwan to northern Honshu, Japan. It is the first of these symbiot• ic corals to be found in association with an alternative partner, living specimens of the large scapho- pod Fissidentalium vernedei. The coral always occupies the apical end of the shell, the part that pro• trudes from the sediment. It is thus preserved from being buried and is maintained in an upright position (the same advantages it also gets when its partner is a sipunculan). On live F. vernedei, H. japonicus incrusts a manganese rich black mineral coating that characterizes the exposed, apical part of the shell. It is speculated about which factors may cause coral larvae to associate with the partner (sipunculan squatting a shell, scaphopod in its own shell). Introduction The solitary Indo-Pacific scleractinian genera Heterocyathus Milne Edwards & Haime, 1848 (Caryophylliidae) and Heteropsammia Milne Edwards & Haime, 1848 (Dendrophylliidae) are known for their convergent symbiotic way of life.
